AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

@DisapointedSister

Don’t worry, I’ve saved you the trouble.
At this present time, there are NO new covid variant detected in China. A quick Google is all it’s taken.

"keeping ourselves fit and eating well to the extent we can afford to etc"

Wow @Newmumatlast The cognitive dissonance is breathtaking. During lockdowns takeaways were open and gyms were shut. Gym owners were heavily punished and fined if/when they dared to open. There were several cases in the press. This is a good example of the psychological abuse we were subjected to. Avenues of keeping fit cut off and the public still blamed. I predicted during Lockdown 1 that whatever the public did it would never be good enough and i was proved right.

Grassisbluer · 01/01/2023 16:42

@RosaMoline Hmm, don't know if it's to do with a new variant or anything, but the US are set to restrict travellers from China from Jan 5th (by requiring them to have a recent negative test) as case numbers have increased there. It's been in the news.

I was aware of that, as are other countries due to the covid surge in China. However, @DisapointedSister claimed in another post that there was a ‘new variant’ detected in China, I asked them to provide evidence, which they have failed to do do, and a quick google search reveals that there isn’t (at the moment anyway) when I took them to task for fear mongering, they went on the attack and became defensive.

You’re right, it’s not a new variant atm it’s one we’ve had and is on the way out.

Name change fail?
why can’t you name your ‘source’ and their evidence then please about this new variant detected in China that nobody is reporting on?

I realise that some think I'm unreasonable but the fact is that Covid killed her. That's what the doc said. Covid. She's had flu and got over it as most of us have.

The lasting effects of Covid are dreadful as I've seen in our DS1.

It is far, far worse than flu.

Covid is killing the elderly and the vulnerable. There is a test we can all take to help prevent the spread. To keep this we love alive.

It isn't too big an ask. The tests should be free but they aren't - blame the tories. The cost is a small price to pay.

My cousin was full of fun and had the prospect of many more years ahead. I shall miss her so much. The more so because I believe her death was avoidable.

Thanks again to those who understand.

It CAN be worse than flu not IS.

In your opinion.....

She has a very low opinion of elderly people...

It comes from the mindset of someone with a nice house in an area where they have plenty of local friends (all with cars), and nice kitchens with space for "entertaining" and the money to pay for a takeaway or cooked meal for everyone.

So much of what we saw over lockdowns came from this point of view. 'Oh I'm SO enjoying the time off with the kiddies, WFH and being able to do my yoga, having lessons in the garden and baking our own weight in banana bread, I've realised what's REALLY important.' I bet the families in the 15 storey flats near me could have told a different story in 2020.

Yep totally and I have to.say around I found parts of the first lockdown quite relaxing ,I remember days in the garden when the weather was nice and we had a huge paddling pool my dh,also had 12_weeks off work which was paid due to underlying health issues, but I don't advocate for locking down again and realise some peop!e had a much harder time then me.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 17:03

God alive, how many times did I hear that in 2020/21? perhaps not for YOU, OP.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/01/2023 16:58

Doesn't she just. They live 'too long', apparently.

There is a new subvariant though that is starting to be reported.

Oblomov22 · 01/01/2023 17:09

I'm sorry for your loss.
But I agree that your loss has clouded your sense of judgement. Elderly people die of pneumonia, and many other things. We do need to get back to as much norm as possible.

Your earlier post was misinformed as to how much masks etc stop spread to the wearer. Plus expecting people to test and stay in is not the guidelines. After furlough the government can't afford to pay sick pay anymore.

I don't have a problem with any of that.

Oblomov22 · 01/01/2023 17:12

Nope. I disagree. Tests were free for a long time. Rightly so. But that stopped end of March, rightly so.

What are you on about? What I have said isn't limited to covid it's about helping the NHS.i never said I agreed that gyms should be closed and takeaways open. I also made clear in my post that it isnt just people themselves who are responsible for helping the NHS it's just one door blame lies at. If you choose to be ignorant to the full extent of my post to fulfil your agenda that's a matter for you but don't try to insult my intelligence.

JanusTheFirst · 01/01/2023 17:20

My earlier post was not misinformed about mask wearing.

I take the word of the WHO rather than a random poster on mumsnet.

www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/question-and-answers-hub/q-a-detail/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-masks

I haven't asked for another lockdown or any extreme measures, just for the community to do simple things to protect the vulnerable. If people choose not to, there isn't much I can do about it. Other than wish they cared more.

My cousin is dead. She died of Covid. She may not have had to. Her life was as valuable as anyone else's and those here who think it wasn't are beneath contempt.

She was loved, she was fit, she was enjoying retirement, very well earned. I will miss her so much.

I will do what I can to keep alive those loved by others. Masks are no problem if it saves a life. Distancing is fine to protect others. If I have Covid I will stay indoors so no one suffers a loss that was my fault.

OP posts:
JenniferBooth · 01/01/2023 17:27

Funnily enough when it comes to fitness and weight loss advice people are always told they should do it for themselves no one else.

Now post Covid post lockdowns we should be doing it for the NHS??!!!!

JenniferBooth · 01/01/2023 17:32

You dont criminilize going to the gym and then blame the public for not keeping fit. That is abuse.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 17:33

Masks are no problem if it saves a life. Distancing is fine to protect others. If I have Covid I will stay indoors so no one suffers a loss that was my fault

You have no business deciding if 'masks are no problem.' Martyr yourself, distance yourself, isolate yourself, pride yourself on the dubiously logical grounds that 'no one suffered a loss that was my fault.' Leave the rest of us the hell alone.

HisNameWasMike · 01/01/2023 17:35

Distancing is fine to protect others

No, distancing is NOT fine. It causes immense harm.

Stop selfishly expecting to impose restrictions on other people because of your personal feelings and fears.

BitterTits · 01/01/2023 17:36

Sorry OP but I'm expected to go to work with Covid. In fact they rather I didn't test.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/01/2023 17:37

Masks are no problem if it saves a life. Distancing is fine to protect others.

No problem for you. Distancing is fine for you. Don't speak for everyone else.
