AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

Ryanair. Such class. Not. 😂

Funny how people who love playing the poor mouth and victim suddenly look down on Ryanair, as if the point isn't to get from A to B. This thread is eye opening when it comes to people's priorities, or lack thereof.

I just think the trolls should aim for a greater intellectual and emotional commitment to the persona. Otherwise it undermines the integrity of the whole shebang.

I don't think Ryanair flights to Italy is exactly 'glam jetsetting' but your jealousy is showing. Perhaps if you spent less money on acrylics and wine, you could go on holiday too

You're obsessed with acrylics. Do you want us to all chip in and get you a set? You can impatiently tap them on the back of the chair in front on your EasyJet flight to Malaga. I can't tell you how satisfying it is.

Sorry for your loss

People sadly die of illnesses like flu, strep, sepsis, pneumonia and Covid every day and every year and probably always will.

What is over - is the public health emergency of a new disease with no herd immunity meaning a significantly higher number of people die than normal.

An absolute tragedy for each individual and their friends and family.

But for society as a whole we have always accepted and understood that death happens.

Sorry but for most people things are back to normal.

Cuppasoupmonster · 01/01/2023 15:37

I don’t think an elderly person dying as an ‘absolute tragedy’, very sad yes. But not a tragedy.

Seriously, you’ve done a really poor job today at winding people up. You’ve been well and truly owned by PP. Give up now and try harder next time.

Cherryblossoms85 · 01/01/2023 15:38

Sadly elderly people can and do die of a cold quite regularly. We can't change the COVID situation with more restrictions, we would run out of money to fund any healthcare.

A rather semantic nit pick

Your 'very sad' is another persons 'absolute tragedy'

I can look down on anything - and anyone - I choose, thanks. And I do.

No, the two are not the same. I know it’s fashionable to use extreme language on here and for nobody to object because of ‘minimising’ or ‘you feel what you feel’, but an elderly person dying is absolutely not a tragedy in any sense of the word.

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/01/2023 15:45

@Cuppasoupmonster

In your opinion.....

Silverbook · 01/01/2023 15:45

I'm sorry for your loss and hope you are kind to yourself over the coming months.

I think you ABVU though - for a number of reasons.
Testing is no longer free.
Most employers no longer require testing.
If you are self employed/on 0 hours contract/without sickness cover you won't be financially supported for any time off.
Many services and employment sectors are already struggling.

IMO it has to be treated like any other illness.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 15:46

It might well be to them and their family.

Exactly. There won’t be any health care left for the elderly if we keep down this path they will start dying of really easily treatable things like UTIs and not being able to get maintenance meds.

Just the other day I couldn’t get my GP on the phone for my daughter’s fever because so many children have been cooped up that they are all coming down with several illnesses at once here in canada. It’s totally clogged up health care, paediatricians, and child care resources. Scarlet fever, chicken pox, colds, flus, covid, strep, hand foot and mouth disease, RSV, if they can get it you name it. It just goes to show that we can’t avoid it all forever. It’s going to catch up to us one way or the other.

There is now a shortage of children’s over the counter medications it’s even worse.

Because all the family doctors are tied up with small children people can’t stop the illnesses in their early stages. People are now therefore clogging up walk in clinics and now taking their children to the ER for things that general practitioners could have solved in a normal situation.

We either deal with it now or pay for it later in my opinion. It’s not sustainable.

@HisNameWasMike i was taking a pot shot at Little Miss “stay the fuck at home you plebs because I want to go to Barthelona” - and I’m astounded at her cheek/naïveté!

I didn’t realise I could get a nail tech around (and never have my nails done!) - but fuck me, should we ever find ourselves in lockdown again I’ll be getting hair, nails, fake tans, massages, you name it!

She rarely went out to crowded places like supermarkets and cinemas, that's what I meant to say. She went for a walk most days and visited a local stately home for which she had a season ticket. We met up quite often. As she did other friends - but everyone tested to be on the safe side. I'm sorry if I made her sound like a recluse.

Did she have health anxiety?

My 74 year old father has chronic illnesses and still goes out regularly to crowded places. It's sad when people stop living out of fear. 73 isn't old at all.

Unfortunately, whilst I feel for you for losing a loved one, I don't agree with you.

My unofficial diagnosis for this incoherent rant is that it's due to an overdose of Tesco Chardonnay.

So a new variant out of the uncountable number of new variants is fear mongering now? At this rate it’s not even news anymore. If that strikes fear into your heart I can’t imagine what it must be like for you to check the weather daily before you leave for work. 😂😂😂😂

Right. Please provide a link about this new variant in China then please.

elderly person dying is absolutely not a tragedy in any sense of the word.

It might well be to them and their family.

While perhaps it might be a tragedy for an elderly person to die. It’s also a tragedy for an elderly person to die and not get to say goodbye to their loved ones. For the surviving family to never get to say I love you or hold their hand as they pass. To get told how to handle the funeral and how many can show up. To not get to go to their country of origin for familial support. All things I had to face when my loved one passed. So fuck the lockdowns.

It’s cruel to live our lives and go places without asking permission? You don’t know cruelty if you think that’s cruel. I had to mourn alone by myself when my grandmother passed. Terrible fucking people dictating her passing. She died in a cold room all alone without love. And then her funeral was dictated cruelly. And then I was not even allowed to mourn properly. I will never lay down and watch that happen to anyone ever again.

sst1234 · 01/01/2023 16:26

Do we think ‘Basic Becky’ might be trending by the end of the day and may even be word/phrase of 2023.
