AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

The covid cases in the hospital I work in have doubled in the last couple of weeks. People are only swabbed for certain criteria so it’s not asymptomatic people etc. I think people were so damaged by lockdowns and fear etc that it’s easier for many to just believe Covid is now ‘just a cold’ than acknowledge that it’s a horrid new virus we are still learning about. Yes vaccines help and no more lockdowns but it’s a hideous virus that is causing us more damage than we realise.

So sorry for your loss.

Road deaths usually impact younger people who would otherwise not have died for many, many years. Covid affected people who were, on average, older, iller, fatter, weaker and whose chances of dying within the near future were higher than the nineteen year old cyclist who got run over last week. For example>

I’m not sure what the alternative is. We have to try to get some kind of normality and quality of life. My grandmother was unable to see her great grandchildren for 2 years and even in April 2022 I had to fight with the care home manager to be allowed to take my 3 dc to see her, threatening cqc. We’ve now moved her to a lovely new home who allowed my dc and even our dog. Yes, she might catch covid from us unknowingly and due but that’s better than a life of isolation.

In reality she had covid a year ago while in hospital and for her, at 96, it was a mild sniffle. My experience was far worse as I slept for 10 days with no appetite. It’s unpredictable but we can’t all live in fear. It might happen but you also might die in a car accident or have a stroke.

They can bring in whatever 'measures' they like!

We will all be mixing still....just like our government Smile

Yep, count me in.

(I can hear your username in my head, love it!)

@HisNameWasMike

And I presume it's to hell with the people who will die as a result of your selfishness?

Anyway all the signs are pointing to new protective measures being announced soon so we will see if the covidiots comply then.

Lockdowns won't happen. The country can't afford to do it again.

Theluggage15 · 01/01/2023 15:00

You’re really not very pleasant are you? Nasty snobbish little comments.

R u ok hun?! You seem....angry.

I dont like chardonnay btw 🤣

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 15:01

Bully for you if your idea of 'having a life' is going to your mates house for a bottle of Tesco's Yellow Tail Chardonnay. Personally, I like being able to fly abroad to any country I want with no restrictions and enjoy the gym, restaurants, bars and theatres in London, but I'm glad Basic Becky would be perfectly happy with another lockdown because she can get her nail tech round on the sly

You sound more and more unpleasant with every post.

Same here

NeedAHoliday2021 · 01/01/2023 15:02

I fully supported initial lockdowns. Would I do it again? Nope. I’d actively protest against it having been banned from seeing family - care homes and those abroad.

Branleuse · 01/01/2023 15:02

SalYPimienta · 01/01/2023 14:38

How can you 'not comply' if you're not allowed to enter a country or return to the UK after being abroad? How can you 'not comply' if you want to go to to the pub and the pub is shut?

Do you actually ever stop to think before you type?

I would obviously comply with restrictions on foreign travel etc and things outside of my control, but i would not comply with restrictions on going out and seeing friends and family.

Theluggage15 · 01/01/2023 15:03

feellikeanalien · 01/01/2023 15:05

OP I'm very sorry for your loss. It's always devastating when the person appeared to be otherwise healthy.

My Mum died of pneumonia at the very beginning of the pandemic. She was 87. It was classified as community acquired pneumonia. You could say that at her age she should have not been going out in the winter months to protect herself. In my view that would probably have been worse for her.

She loved nothing better than meeting her friends for coffee, attending her local church and volunteering to teach English to asylum seekers. If she had given up all those things she would have had no life.

We have a very odd view of death in the UK these days. People do live longer but that is not, in my opinion, always a good thing. Many people used to die in their 70s. Both of my Mum's parents did. Many people are living with things that would previously have killed them but at what cost to their quality of life.

Life is not fair and when something like this happens it is natural to hit out and try and find someone to blame. My DP died at 50. I think we are also more afraid of death than we used to be, which may partly be because of the decline of a belief in a higher power and that death is not the end.

I think what I am trying to say is that your feelings are perfectly natural as are those of people who cannot afford testing and time off work. Lockdown meant that I couldn't spend time with my Dad when he was dying of cancer. I don't know what the answer is but I do think that instead of spending life worrying about what might happen we just have to get on with it.

I think @SalYPimienta's message can be condensed as 'I'm a Really Big Deal who needs to travel and go to bars and theatres and drink good wine, so can the peasants please stay in and not spread covid so I can have my naice life that you plebs can only aspire to, pls?'

SalYPimienta · 01/01/2023 15:06

Branleuse · 01/01/2023 15:02

I don't think most people would. The point is that the state is capable of enormously reducing everyone's freedoms and it's deluded to think otherwise. I personally would rather normalise individual preventative measures like masks, hand gel and ventilation than any kind of blanket restrictions on anything at all, but maybe I'm the weirdo. Wearing a mask for ten minutes and opening a window on the train is a far smaller inconvenience than being unable to go on holiday or restaurants being shut for weeks. People seem to want it all, but they can't have it all.

LondonCat7 · 01/01/2023 15:06

If individuals want to meet up and break the rules, I hope they are dealt with with the full force of the law.

The next lockdown will need to be properly enforced with use of the army where necessary.

No, the point is that a life restricted to only being able to go people's houses is a tiny, sad, boring restricted life, so these faux brave declarations of 'I wouldn't comply!' are rather comical. I guess some people prioritise feeling like they're sticking it to the man rather than having actual, real freedoms.

The army that's so depleted there is one squaddie per town in the UK? yeah, right.

You can be angry, I take pre cautions where needed.
cancer gets more funding than lots, and lots curable, I have Parkinson’s no cure, just very limited treatments, MND has no cure and very nasty to name two.
Life is unfair and I for one need limited freedom that I have with Parkinson’s, affecting my 3D world, through poor brain connections.
i will not go around masked up again unless forced.
your aunt was a good age

BasicBecky up there needs to understand that not everyone lives in a filthy hellhole and uses public transport to go to bars to get drunk like a student. Poor BasicBecky sounds very cross - she should probably get someone around for a set of acrylics - will cheer her right up.
