AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

www.cbsnews.com/news/china-covid-cases-explosion-not-due-to-zero-covid-lifting-who-deaths-reported/

Is interesting because it basically says the surge was happening in China before the rules were lifted and that quite a lot are still following the rules and it is still spreading.

China shows that the genie is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back. Testing is unreliable with the new variants (6 of us came down with a virus, 4 tested negative all the way through, one positive straight away and another positive on 3rd attempt - thankfully positive straightaway was number 2 hit so the remainder avoided but I was ill first tested twice and was negative so went about). And given the amount of plastic and packaging it uses.

Mask wearing is only effective when done properly and with a good mask used once - so for the majority fairly pointless. And again look at the environmental wastage.

It just doesnt work - nothing does - the virus adapts and changes and there isnt much we can do but live with it

No you don't, if you are ill keep your germs to yourself. If everyone did that the spread would go down and everyone would be safer.

You do realise many people are asymptomatic? What are they supposed to do?

Many people can't work from home and don't get sick pay. They have no choice but to work, or do you expect them to lose their jobs, homes etc.?

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 14:46

@Thismonkeysgonetodevon

And of course sickness I think everyone who ever has a “sniffle” should be paid to be off sick

You think what??

You missed off the 🙄

PicotaCherry · 01/01/2023 14:49

How many fit and healthy children died of covid? Yet we shut them away and damaged their mental health and education to protect the elderly and vulnerable.
How many fit and healthy children have died so far of strep a? Yet we all carry on as normal....🤔
Have a think about that!!

NearlyMidnight · 01/01/2023 14:49

Where does your money come from to pay for your lovely days at home in, (as another pp put it), Netflixland?

Benefits? Pensions? Furlough? WHO is paying???

And as previous pp said - how do you think the electricity for your tv and fridge and oven to cook your lovely dinners is generated? By elves? By other people magically doing it from home while knitting? And the water, and the sewage treatment, and all those deliveries to keep you in crafting supplies and baking ingredients? And are you existing entirely on food produced by your own lovely garden? Or are other people picking, packing, producing and delivering it - for minimum wage - to your lovely isolated, (I know what's important in life now) life? (And if they are slow by all means make a Formal Complaint - and then Escalate... because you can)

I said at the time that lockdown - and the knock-on problems we are experiencing now - have made our divisions deeper. That won't be cured anytime soon.

HisNameWasMike · 01/01/2023 14:49

How can you 'not comply' if you're not allowed to enter a country or return to the UK after being abroad? How can you 'not comply' if you want to go to to the pub and the pub is shut?

Same as last time. Instead of going to the pub I will have friends over to mine and I'll go to theirs. I'll have my hair and my eyebrows and my nails done in my home by willing people. See whoever I want whenever I want as many times as I want. That's what people mean when they say they won't comply. Don't you engage your brain before you type?

Theluggage15 · 01/01/2023 14:50

It’s hilarious how some people are still stuck in 2020. Even China has given up. The Chinese are really into mask wearing as well, how that’s working out?

Funnywonder · 01/01/2023 14:50

I am very sorry you lost your cousin @JanusTheFirst. I don't think of 73 as elderly at all. My mum was working until she was 74 and only stopped because she had breast cancer and the treatment was energy sapping. She's definitely elderly now though, at nearly 90!

I agree with you that people are behaving as though Covid never happened and as if it's not a big deal anymore. Of course life and society need to move on and we need to live with it, but surely after all the information which was widely disseminated during the pandemic, people should be just a bit more aware of how viruses spread and could at least try to be considerate of others. I was out at the shops yesterday and there were so many people just coughing into the air, with no attempt to keep it to themselves. I understand people need to go to the shops and I'm not saying for one minute that they shouldn't, but how hard is it to wear a mask for a couple of hours? Not an infallible solution, but surely better than just coughing all over everyone? I don't care whether their cough is Covid or not - I don't want it. I will definitely be wearing a mask in public if I get a cough. I've been lucky so far, but not holding my breath after yesterday.

nothingleftttt · 01/01/2023 14:52

@fairywhale
Not everyone that dies of covid has underlying conditions.l

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 14:52

Even today, Dr Rachel Clarke on Twitter is reporting on the disaster that is taking place in the NHS and how protections are necessary

At least she'll get another book out of it.

LondonCat7 · 01/01/2023 14:52

@HisNameWasMike

And I presume it's to hell with the people who will die as a result of your selfishness?

Anyway all the signs are pointing to new protective measures being announced soon so we will see if the covidiots comply then.

It was called post viral fatigue which is what long COVID is, a new fancy word for the same thing.

I have post viral cf, after getting TB in Morocco (and ignoring/all symptoms/ having them dismissed). I have an autoimmune disease and see a Consultant (one of which was on the television regularly during Covid) and long Covid isn't the same as CF. I asked because I was feeling a big aggrieved that he'd spoken about long Covid on the television, but CF doesn't have the same coverage. Thankfully long Covid heart/lung/kidney issues do go away, but it seems to leave a 'weakness' in the way TB does. CF is different, but can be absolutely devastating, luckily after five years I'm getting better. I get PIP based on my CF, but it took appeal after appeal and I missed out on around £5k of benefits and the consultant led clinic doesn't get involved with benefit claims.

Covid could kill me, flu wouldn't because of the way it attacks the body, there's enough treatments for the symptoms in my case. I have had the antibody treatment during Covid and antibiotics. Flu I have ridden out. They are different viruses which attack the body differently and show up differently.

Testing would be beneficial as a public health measure, just to keep away from people in the shops. I think that if you are visiting anyone vulnerable I think that you should test.

SalYPimienta · 01/01/2023 14:54

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 14:43

@SalYPimienta don't be so thick!

By not complying it's clearly meant to mean no masks/distancing/staying in/testing/things which are within our reach!

You're deluded if you think most of this is within your control.

If you needed a negative test to enter a GP surgery, hospital, hospitality venue, take a flight or go to a gig, not much you can do about it. If transport, hospitals and venues decided to actually enforce mask wearing, not much you can do about it. Amazing how somehow it didn't get into your head during the pandemic that you have very little control over most aspects of your life.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 14:54

New protective measures?? @LondonCat7

Where? Link?

NearlyMidnight · 01/01/2023 14:54

Oh and I supported initial lockdowns - until we knew what we were dealing with - I'm with @Newlifestartingatlast on this. But things are different now. And if we we re to have another lockdown it wd have to be organised on a different basis - the pain and the work shared. But that's for another day..

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2023 14:54

Can't wait for my life to be destroyed again because Karen can't possibly wear a face mask round Waitrose or open a window on the bus

Oh dear. Outed yourself a bit there calling people Karens who don't comply with your arbitrary rules.

Funnywonder · 01/01/2023 14:55

You do realise many people are asymptomatic? What are they supposed to do?

People who are asymptomatic are much, much less likely to spread a virus. Is that not pretty widely known?

Branleuse · 01/01/2023 14:55

Im sorry for your loss. Many of us have lost people to covid, but also many of us will have also lost people due to issues around covid restrictions such as hospital cancellations.
I went to a family party last night and several people were not hugging. We were asked to do a covid test before coming.
I on the other hand still have to work with clients in healthcare who are covid positive and its only me that has to wear masks and gloves. They dont.
Also have to work with colleagues streaming with bloody flu ( yes flu) because we dont get sickpay.

We all were forced to follow restrictions for such a long time, and now most people have already had covid, often more than once, so are now weighing up risks on an individual basis.
What exactly is it you want?

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 14:56

@SalYPimienta I WORKED through the entire shitshow last time.....with the dirty, grimy, germ ridden public

Couldn't care less about pubs or planes love!

Lifeomars · 01/01/2023 14:56

Pedallleur · 01/01/2023 14:22

It's now something we have to live. Like flu deaths. Long Covid will become an issue as we haven't seen the results 5/10/20 years along. More people die in road accidents and thats something we accept sadly

Road deaths and serious injuries in the UK, in 2021. 1,608 people were killed (1,558 in Britain, 50 in Northern Ireland). 26,701 were seriously injured (25,892 in Britain, 809 in Northern Ireland). Not comparable with the 200k plus who have died due to Covid is it? Always a good idea to check figures before posting and as far as I am aware RTAs are not contagious

Ponoka7 · 01/01/2023 14:56

Just to add I don't believe in another lockdown, didn't fully comply with the restrictions. I put my DD's need for childcare, as an essential worker, first. It's flu type A that's having an effect on the hospitals.

HisNameWasMike · 01/01/2023 14:56

Oh no, someone thinks I'm selfish. I am so very sad.

Nobody with an ounce of common sense gives a single fuck that the perpetually fearful thinks they're selfish.

You are selfish. You and your ilk. You want people to lose their businesses and their homes and their education and their mental health provision and you want them to lose this because you are afraid of one virus. Look in your own corner because it is you who is selfish.

FrostyFifi · 01/01/2023 14:57

Anyway all the signs are pointing to new protective measures being announced soon so we will see if the covidiots comply then.

I highly doubt it. We've already put inflation through the roof with the last money printing spree. No chance of affording another one and it'll be utterly pointless given the likely compliance level. That wad is shot.

User1785498 · 01/01/2023 14:57

I see all the covid wind up merchants are out in force this weekend, army on the streets next

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 14:58

They can bring in whatever 'measures' they like!

We will all be mixing still....just like our government Smile
