AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

People die of the flu and other viruses esp if elderly.

bumpytrumpy · 01/01/2023 09:19

Sorry for your loss. Elderly people who don't go out much are at risk of picking up many viruses when they do and likely have a low immune system. I hope she had a happy fulfilled life up to this point.

LimeCheesecake · 01/01/2023 09:19

I’m so sorry for your loss. That must be a terrible shock.

take care of yourself today - make sure you eat properly, are you able to be with your family ?

Wow you could try show a tiny bit of empathy

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 09:22

I agree with you. There may be fewer people in hospital with Covid than flu, but there are still a significant number in hospital, and last figures I saw were over 300 dying in a week.

I understand people being fed up with Covid and any change in behaviour. Whilst part of the long waiting lists for hospital treatment is down to the political decisions over many years, part is the result of Covid, and it is never normal why that is still there.

Sorry to read of your loss.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/01/2023 09:22

I'm so sorry OP, I feel the same, I hate the narrative that it's all back to normal. I have friends with long term problems after getting it and my niece has just had it and was dreadfully poorly with it and she's 10.

FrostyFifi · 01/01/2023 09:23

I'm sorry for your loss but I'm not sure why you're blaming other people or what you expect from them.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 01/01/2023 09:24

So sorry for your loss OP - but I have to ask, in a perfect world what would we be doing differently?

Unfortunately we have to learn to live with it. We tried lockdowns, jabs and nothing has worked so( and this is just my opinion) we have to get on with life as best we can.

Allsnotwell · 01/01/2023 09:25

I do agree with you. My friend had Covid last week and she refused to stay home, walked the dog, went to the shops etc - no consideration for those she might infect.
If you’re ill stay home.

I was hoping that Covid would change the sickness policies for businesses - clearly nothing changed and it should’ve done.

Willmafrockfit · 01/01/2023 09:25

i am sorry for your loss

in what way are we not back to normal though?
there is no mask wearing.

JanusTheFirst · 01/01/2023 09:25

Thanks for the sympathetic messages. I have DH here so am not alone.

We're trying to think of happier times and good memories.

DS1 has long Covid, so we are very aware of its continued presence. It's just so depressing that some people don't seem to care about the vulnerable any more.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 01/01/2023 09:25

So sorry for your loss.

But I also have to ask - what do you want people to do differently? We can't live our lives locked up in our homes.

JanusTheFirst · 01/01/2023 09:28

FrostyFifi · 01/01/2023 09:23

I'm sorry for your loss but I'm not sure why you're blaming other people or what you expect from them.

I expect people to test if they are ill and isolate themselves until they are clear. I blame those who do not test and spread it around without even wearing a mask.

I blame those who think they may have it but don't test and don't wear a mask to stop it spreading.

I expect people to care for the wider community but it seems it's too big and ask for some here.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 01/01/2023 09:30

But if your government is not even suggesting we do any of that then people just won't. Most can't even afford tests. For that reason yabu

x2boys · 01/01/2023 09:30

I'm sorry for your loss Op.Covid,is here.to.stay.and sadly people will.still.get sick and some will die ,a good friend of my sister's caught
Covid in the early days of the pandemic late forties no underlying health issues ,and now h has long term debilitating health issues including angina
for the main part though things are relatively normal for most people because what's the alternative .

RandomUsername22 · 01/01/2023 09:30

In the gentlest possible way, YAB very U. I’m so sorry for your loss, but very sadly death is part of life. We all sacrificed far, far too much to the Covid mania and in hindsight, the facts are starting to show that we went way too far, and the maniacal, authoritarian restrictions caused far more damage than they prevented. We cannot and must not ask people to give up their freedoms - we will never eradicate sickness or death from the world, we all just have to live the best we can. I hope you have the time you need to heal and spend with family.

WaddleAway · 01/01/2023 09:32

I’m sorry to hear about your cousin.
My cousin (aged 59) died of pneumonia 2 weeks ago, not covid related. Respiratory viruses have always killed, and will continue to do so, sadly.

TeenDivided · 01/01/2023 09:34

Also we need to balance protecting from the disease with protecting others' mental health. I'm caught between both, elderly vulnerable parents - Dad is still wiping down the Tesco delivery - and a teen with diagnosed anxiety and depression where the anxiety is mainly focused on germs. Making everyone wear masks, or regular testing for college, or even worse lockdowns would probably set DD back a long way.

doingitforyorkshire · 01/01/2023 09:34

The hospitals at the moment are busy with people very ill with the flu, there are some covid patients, but most are flu patients.

There are no tests for flu, you don't know if your carrying it and are asymptomatic, you can't test to see if you have it etc.

I think the biggest issue at the moment is people will test and if the COVID test is negative they will crack on as usual despite the flu being the biggest danger at the moment.

I think there should be less focus on COVID and more focus on respiratory illness in general as clearly, it's not just COVID that's the issue, its now just one of many that can be dangerous for the vulnerable, but the only one that's tested for and that can lead to a false sense of security in relation to the others.

So yes in some ways we are back to normal as we have to manage our illnesses the way we did before with the likes of flu etc as all of the other ones are back in the game now and like I mentioned above, cant be tested for so to avoid singling COVID out and being complacent about the others we need to consider the danger of all of them.

Hobbesmanc · 01/01/2023 09:34

My FIL died of COVID in November. But he was also in his eighties with diabetes and a heart condition. I'm sorry for your loss. And I'm still mourning my lovely FIL

But COVID and other respiratory illnesses won't go away. We do need to flex and adapt. But this can't mean return to the restrictions. It's tanked the economy. Dome untold harm to people's mental health. Possible affected the developmental of swathes of kids. Most of us can't afford to keep testing then isolate. Not everyone gets sick pay.

Tests are not free tHough and many peop!e wont.get.paid if the y don't go into work ,you can't expect people to put their own families wellbeing at risk for the sake,or other ,s especially not when we are having a cost of living crisis.

BadShepherd · 01/01/2023 09:35

I’m sorry for your loss - but as someone has already pointed out, none of us are immortal.

I could pop my clogs from getting an infection cutting my finger making cheese on toast.

taxes and death.

AmberGer · 01/01/2023 09:35

I am sorry for your loss and I understand the points you've raised but for many people. Taking time off and earning SSP is not an option especially in current times with rising bills.
I would wear a mask if I was positive but many wouldn't.

Twiglets1 · 01/01/2023 09:36

I'm sorry for your loss. But I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to carry on buying Covid tests (now they aren't free) and take one every time they feel poorly. The government has literally decided that we don't need to do this anymore and we don't do it for any other virus like flu for example.
However, I do agree that people should stay at home if they feel poorly or if they have to go out, they should wear a mask.

TwilightSkies · 01/01/2023 09:37

Most people don’t care about the wider community unfortunately. Every Covid thread there’s people saying we need to ‘crack on’ and act as though Covid doesn’t exist.
As for people saying you need to catch Covid/flu to build immunity……..that’s not how it works. Covid damages the immune system, a hard pill to swallow.
