AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

I am not sure most people cannot afford a test. They are £2. Yes, of course there are few people but it’s not most….

During the height of the pandemic and before jabs were in place people were doing all sorts to suit their own lives.

There must be no more lockdowns, no shutting the schools. My DF died with Covid on his death certificate, it wasn’t the main cause. He was old and not in good health but if they had put Covid as the main cause I would have queried it.

Its one of the many things you could pass away from. Smoking is a killer. Doesn’t stop people smoking. Drinking excessively is a horrible disease yet it’s rife and causes so many issues. Despite alcohol being expensive some people just find the money for it to the detriment of their families.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:53

£2 per test per person

Adds up quickly as you may need to test a few consecutive days. No thanks

Mumoffairy · 01/01/2023 10:54

Its just how it is now, back to normal.
SIL is a primary school teacher. Had a cold, tested, called the school to say shes tested positive, was told unless shes very poorly she has to come in.
DHs work (not Uk) requires a Drs note to stay home now. No Dr here will write one for covid unless you have full on flu symptoms.

No excuses from me. Masks don't work and I don't want to wear one

I understand you don't want to wear one.
I don't understand how you can deny the fact that wearing mask when ill limits spreading your germs. Why are the doctors wearing masks during operations? Sounds like an excuse.

Re people out spreading flu-

If someone genuinely has flu they simply can’t crack on, you literally cannot get out of bed, so unlikely to be out spreading it.

Had flu last year and Covid - flu was way worse, although felt terribly tired for 3 weeks post Covid.

I thought that flu could also be asymptomatic. and on a scale a bit like covid, as in you could have mild flu, or you could be completely floored and unable to get out of bed

PineCone74 · 01/01/2023 10:54

I am very sorry OP, and I could not agree with you more. I feel very sad and angry with the prevailing attitude of ‘it is all over’, ‘it is just a cold’ etc, seemingly oblivious of the fact that some vaccinated people continue to be very ill, and even die, and Long Covid is making many people’s lives an utter misery. People who are compromised continue to have to worry. I am of course not suggesting that restrictions have to continue, but just wish people would show more sensitivity in their overall attitude to the fact that it is not ‘all over’ for many, many people. I am thinking of you today OP.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:56

@ZiriForEver you need to accept that some of us cannot get on and do our jobs with masks hindering us!!

No way will I put my physical safety at risk for the sake of a flimsy ineffective bit of paper

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:58

Posted too soon there

A surgeon is different, not very often I have peoples hands in my body rooting around

Also, the Chinese are all tooled up with masks, and always have been, yet look at the state they are in..

cookiesbeforepookies · 01/01/2023 10:59

YABU. My mum is CEV and we are focused on keeping her safe.

We buy tests for her but can’t afford to test everyone (she has 6 children and their grandchildren).

If I don’t test for my own CEV mother, why would I test for strangers?

You're correct. Flu also has a lower death rate than covid. Neither virus will go away and both will continue to cause deaths in vulnerable people. As will RSV, scarlet fever, etc etc.

FrostyFifi · 01/01/2023 09:23

I'm sorry for your loss but I'm not sure why you're blaming other people or what you expect from them.

Where did the OP do this? Some sympathy wouldn't go amiss.

She is blaming other people though, she’s blaming people who don’t test after every sniffle.

Snaketime · 01/01/2023 11:01

I am so sorry for your loss OP, I really am, but YABU. COVID isn't going to go away, it is (unfortunately) here to stay, like the flu, pneumonia etc. There are many illnesses that kill the vulnerable that we live have always lived with on a daily basis, COVID is now just another one added to the list. They have a vaccine and they know how to treat it now, that doesn't mean people still don't die from it but they have a much higher survival rate now than they did.
We have to go back to some kind of normality again at some point.

x2boys · 01/01/2023 11:01

My youngest son has severe autism and learning disabilities,he goes to a special school.for children with severe and profound learning disabilities, some of the children ( not.my son thankfully) have profound and multiple disabilities, and are on oxygen and tube Fed etc, even at his school they are not routinely testing and children and teachers are advised to still come into school if they feel well enough even if they test positive for covid.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 11:01

Proper sick pay
Free tests
Face coverings in hospitals and other medical settings
Working from home if you have even a cold (for those able to in 2020)
Hand washing properly
Covering your nose/face when you sneeze and walking away from others

Not too much to ask, not restricting life unduly if at all?

DuplicateUserName · 01/01/2023 11:02

JanusTheFirst · 01/01/2023 09:28

I expect people to test if they are ill and isolate themselves until they are clear. I blame those who do not test and spread it around without even wearing a mask.

I blame those who think they may have it but don't test and don't wear a mask to stop it spreading.

I expect people to care for the wider community but it seems it's too big and ask for some here.

Many people can barely afford to heat their homes and feed their children.

How are they supposed to afford all these tests, let alone keep their jobs with so much time off if they get cold like symptoms?

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 11:02

@LlynTegid deluded!!

This is no way to live. We don’t have to test. We don’t have to isolate. If we all tested still and isolated and continued with all the ridiculous restraints, life wouldn’t be worth living… it was fucking miserable. Everyone I know has been poorly this last few months due to isolating and then going back in to the ‘normal world’. I’m sorry for your loss but elderly people die.. that’s just life.

Jaybird43 · 01/01/2023 11:04

So sorry, OP. You are right - covid is old news but still racking up a death rate. Sending love to you and your family at this awful time x

ZiriForEver · 01/01/2023 11:05

Twiglets1 · 01/01/2023 10:28

What about people who work in a school though, like me? People have to be there but it is reasonable to expect all school staff and all pupils to wear masks forever because it's a "place where other people have to be"?

I'm not saying it is perfect, but the thread was about elderly (so presumably retired), who are taking precautions on their side (not going to crowded places when unnecessary) so if the other shoppers/commuters do the decent thing, it would significantly help with their risk levels.

I am aware that working with children, especially the small one, comes with meeting illnesses left and right. I don't have a simple solution to that. Still, it doesn't prevent anyone from breaking the chain and just taking mask for those 15 minutes in a shop.

Theluggage15 · 01/01/2023 11:07

My Grandma died of flu. Funnily enough I don’t remember blaming the general public for her death. And people who spout on about free tests. They cost taxpayers a fortune when they were ‘free’.

This is not true. 75% of us are asymptomatic when we have flu - Linky. But some die (millions in the 1918 pandemic). Covid is asymptomatic in most people, but some, predominantly very elderly people, die. Polio is a mild infection of the gut in the majority of infants, but some suffer permanent damage to the nervous system.

Snaketime · 01/01/2023 11:08

Oh and I should add OP, I say all that as someone who does still test and actually did one the other day because I felt rotten, because I work in a customer facing job and we get a lot of elderly customers, plus I have several colleagues who are critically vulnerable.
I can't really afford the tests as we are barely getting by as is, but I do still test.
That said you don't have to test anymore and unless you feel really unwell you can actually go to work even if you are positive.
Would you be this upset if it was the flu that killed her? Or this cold that is going around that if your not careful becomes a chest infection?

Aposterhasnoname · 01/01/2023 11:09

Genuine question, why do you see it as the responsibility of others to wear ineffectual masks which have done Jack shit in China, rather than the vulnerable and their families wearing FFP2 masks which have been shown to protect the wearer?

ancientgran · 01/01/2023 11:10

Remmy123 · 01/01/2023 09:19

People die of the flu and other viruses esp if elderly.

People shouldn't be out spreading flu either.
