AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

I am so sorry for your loss.
However, life is never guaranteed and i don't think we should all be hiding away now the public health need isn't there.
I have a condition that makes me very high risk if I get COVID, (or even a cold), but I can't see any quality of life in shielding.

maddening · 01/01/2023 10:04

Covid is now like one of the many illnesses that people die from so we are "back to normal".

Very sorry for your loss OP, it is such terrible news.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 01/01/2023 10:06

I expect people to test if they are ill and isolate themselves until they are clear. I blame those who do not test and spread it around without even wearing a mask.

Are you going to pay for these tests? Are you going to pay for them to stay off work for several days even if they're completely symptom free?

I blame those who think they may have it but don't test and don't wear a mask to stop it spreading.

Again, are you going to pay for it?

I expect people to care for the wider community but it seems it's too big and ask for some here.

People can't afford to do that. Testing and isolating mean people don't get paid and can't afford to feed their children.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

i think in an ideal world everyone would be more considerate when they are ill but sadly when your vulnerable it’s not just covid which is a massive risk. Ds nearly died from the common cold. I have actually got a bit pissed off with the narrative that covid is some bigger level of risk day to day.

Workinghardeveryday · 01/01/2023 10:06

I am so sorry for your loss xx

YABU OP, but you’re allowed to be as you’re grieving. I’m sorry for your loss.

Elderly people are vulnerable to all sorts of viruses and infections, covid isn’t any different. I’m sure you don’t expect people who have common colds to isolate at home? My whole extended family have been really ill over Christmas with a non covid respiratory/cold virus, none of us are elderly but we have all been ill for weeks (like most of the country it seems!).

Lockdowns have done so much damage, I have young DC and my eldest will probably feel the effects for years to come, if not permanently. I stuck to all the rules at the time and now I cannot believe I did, and I can’t believe what the world was like 2 years ago - isolating tiny children, keeping families and friends apart. It makes me sick.

My daughter, only 20 is still suffering from Long Covid, and feels very sad that no one seems to give a damn anymore. Would it really hurt people to wear a mask 😷, especially if they know they have some virus that can kill others. I'm saddened by some peoples uncaring attitudes. I'm very sorry for your loss OP.
Also if Covid is just like other viruses why don't we have Long Flu clinics? Long cold clinics?

@Noonesperfect People have suffered from CFS and ME, conditions which I believe can be triggered following illness - including viral illness. There aren't clinics because sadly the NHS haven't funded them (not in my area anyway). Long Covid has just been higher profile because it's onset has all been in the last 2 years.

loulouljh · 01/01/2023 10:09

People do die I am afraid...they always have and always will. We seem to be forgetting that. Sorry for your loss.

JanusTheFirst · 01/01/2023 10:09

I realise that some think I'm unreasonable but the fact is that Covid killed her. That's what the doc said. Covid. She's had flu and got over it as most of us have.

The lasting effects of Covid are dreadful as I've seen in our DS1.

It is far, far worse than flu.

Covid is killing the elderly and the vulnerable. There is a test we can all take to help prevent the spread. To keep this we love alive.

It isn't too big an ask. The tests should be free but they aren't - blame the tories. The cost is a small price to pay.

My cousin was full of fun and had the prospect of many more years ahead. I shall miss her so much. The more so because I believe her death was avoidable.

Thanks again to those who understand.

and most of us have had and got over covid. Some people don't get over flu.

There is already a condition called chronic fatigue- this is similar to long covid and is the result of viral infection- people have long been ignored despite it being recognised and the impact to sufferers.

We also have many illnesses which have long reaching impacts beyond the actual illness, this is now one of those. It is not that No one gives a dalm about your daughter, we all feel for anyone dealing with long reaching impact of any illness - not just viruses.

Hbh17 · 01/01/2023 10:10

This is sad news, but other posters are right.
Respiratory illnesses have always killed thousands of people every winter.
We know that masks do not make any difference - you only have to look at China to see that.
We know that restrictions have caused more damage & adverse effects than they prevented.
We cannot lives our lives in perpetual fear of something that may or may not happen.

SoupDragon · 01/01/2023 10:11

I'm sorry for your loss though. It must be very raw right now.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 01/01/2023 10:11

@JanusTheFirst

I'm really sorry your cousin died, especially at this time of year but as a few of the posters have said if it hadn't been covid, she would still very likely have died of something else like flu, chest infection, pneumonia, whatever, as she was elderly. And as quite a few people have said, elderly people are very susceptible to viruses and bugs, especially this time of year, and are much more likely to die (sorry.) Flowers

I do agree about covid though. It definitely hasn't gone. However, I am fully vaccinated and so is everyone I know - (as far as I know,) so I'm not going to live my life with a mask stuck on my face and not mix with my friends and family and loved ones.

Probably since the spring of 2022, I've been living fairly normally and I haven't caught COVID, and nobody I know has. In fact I have NEVER had it... and only 5 or 6 people I know in real life have had it. All 30s and 40s in age and all recovered well.

I think it's here to stay. We can't avoid it. We're gonna have to live with it, along with flu and pneumonia. Again, I'm very sorry about your cousin... Sad

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:11

How much is a test these days?

tonystarksrighthand · 01/01/2023 10:11

People die of other things too.

AramintaLee · 01/01/2023 10:12

I wouldn't say back to normal... just acceptance that this is the new normal.

I'm trying to just live my life but any whiff of not feeling well and I'll do an LFT to be on the safe side as have vulnerable relatives.

Sorry for your loss OP

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 01/01/2023 10:15

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:11

How much is a test these days?

When I was in 'Savers' store a few days ago, they were selling them - they were by the checkouts... I think there were something like £2.99. Not sure how many is in the pack. Go to savers when you go to the shops and have a look. (Hopefully you have one near you...)

www.savers.co.uk/

B&M and Boots might have them, but I know for sure Savers definitely do.

Oakdog · 01/01/2023 10:18

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I don't think things are back to normal, but I do think we have to live as normally as we can. I have a relative who barely goes anywhere (young, no health issues) and it's so upsetting how much this has affected their family life. It's made me realise how much we need to carry on as normally as possible, if able.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:19

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I don't want to buy any, just wondering how much we are expected to spend on the things!

I haven't tested since 2021

BCBird · 01/01/2023 10:19

I am sorry for your loss. I am annoyed that we have gone from tight restrictions to absolutely nothing. As a minimum people should avoid going out if they are ill and if they have to go out, wear a mask. As for people citing thst the govnt don't require this any more, since when did we have to rely on legislation use our common sense? I think sickness policies should have been amended and also tests should still be available for those people who cannot afford them . Take care.

SweetSakura · 01/01/2023 10:21

I know young, healthy people who have died from flu.

My young healthy son nearly died from RSV when he was 2

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:21

How come the Chinese are tooled up with industrial strength masks and are still struggling worse than any country??

They wear 'proper masks' and we are expected to wear thin paper things or pretty patterned material masks sold on Etsy?

I'm guessing masks don't work?

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/01/2023 10:21

I'm sorry for your loss but you are unreasonable. Covid isn't going away, people have to live with it. The majority who contact Covid now will be okay, not everyone, the same as flu.

SweetSakura · 01/01/2023 10:22

Anyone who is ECV can still get tests for free.
