Parents want me to do and kids to do covid test before visiting

AIBU for being a bit put out by this?
My brother is also visiting and he's really cautious about covid so it could be driven by him. There is no talk of them doing one.
AIBU to be a bit miffed?

@Tygger I appreciate that the title of the thread isn't entirely clear, but it's OP who is visiting her parents, not the other way around. So it is OP who is the guest.

Presumably that changes what you say above because the parents most certainly do not have to take any precautions in their own home. They get to impose whatever rules they like – just as OP gets to choose whether she wants to comply with those rules or not. What she doesn't get to do is ignore them and still expect entry into her parents' home.

Tygger... fact check: Vaccines do not prevent transmission, true
They vastly reduce the severity of symptoms... true

PCR tests are accurate
LFT's are accurate to approx 90%
Seeing people struggling to maintain oxygen levels, ravaged lungs on chest x rays, saying goodbye to family members via facetime before being ventilated, an experienve I'll never forget as an Intensive Care nurse

Extraordinary selfishness and ignorance of some ppl on here

Of course you should test & the children explain to them why. Simply like to make sure you are well before we see Nanny & Grandad.
I lost my fiancee to Covid. Got it myself when visiting him in ICU 2 years ago today. Wascvey ill & still have long Covid problems. Even with all boosters etc got it again, still getting over it. Yet we as a family keep within our bubble. Wear masks if we have to go out. Because my youngest is a life threatned child. We nearly list herbin July 2020, because of severe acute phemonia, the hospital put her on a no resusitation list withnout asking me, I found out by chance. So yes with living in this terrible situation at the moment you should be caring about your parents health. Also your childrens if at toddlers, playgroup or nursery or whatever they sre very likely to pick up any of the diseases going round atm. Many especially Covid are still killing people especially the vunerable. So why you are hesitating is beyond me. And as for the people to say pretend to take it, words would not cover what I think of them. I only allow must have repair men in the house or must go to health appointments. At all times masks still used both ways and repair men have to take a covid test or will not be allowed in to the house. There is so much out there atm I am not prepared to take unnecassay chances for my family or myself or indeed other people. I do not even allow my daughter & her children over as eldest is at school & at risk of picking up anything. So do the tests and think about others.

saying goodbye to family members via facetime before being ventilated

This should have never been allowed and is a black stain on the profession. Nobody should die alone or be forced to say goodbye over fucking FaceTime.

Also, the early ventilation protocol itself killed people, BoJo should be thankful they figured it out before he caught the virus.

Isn't it true the they reduce transmission? Some one who is spluttering with COVID will be more infectious than some one non symptomatic. Or is it more complex because a very ill person will be forced to isolate and a low symptomatic person not.

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 25/12/2022 17:11

Both very good and relevant points which, you're right, make it more complex.
Asymptomatic spread is still a serious issue, hence the good news that vaccines reduce the severity of symptoms, hospitalisations and therefore deaths from covid

It’s not selfish, it’s life. The worlds moved on but some are go scared to move with it.

Some people can’t afford to just pretend it’s as as simple as a wee cold for everyone

Its not remotely selfish to keep yourself, or your loved one, safe if you are more likely to be more ill.

Yeah, that’s not selfish, but that’s not the case here. They’re not even high risk.

Also, whether you’re high risk or not, you can’t go about your life and mingle in shops/restaurants & then request last
minute that people perform an unnecessary, invasive, unreliable test to see you when plans have been put in place ages ago.

You have to pick a side and not use it as a form of control and chance to belittle someone when it suits you.

Given the OP stated her father is concerned in part to having a bad chest last year and his age has never been mentioned it’s amusing how many people have decided he’s not at high risk…

How on earth is asking someone to do a covid test belittling? That’s just daft talk

Have you seen her messages to her - they are belittling. A bad chest, what, a cold?

Covid was a problem in 2020 - move on.

JustLyra · 25/12/2022 19:46

Covid was a problem in 2020 - move on.

Covid is still a problem for many of us.

Lucky you that it’s not for you.

no need to be dicks to those of us who can’t just ignore it

Yes. People are dicks for caring about the absolute bullshit souted by pellet pretending that covid is nothing.

I’ll remember your insistence of that next time my daughter is being resuscitated (as has happened twice so far)

move on indeed

JustLyra · 25/12/2022 19:57

People not pellet

I wish your daughter well, but her situation is clearly different to OPs and on that (OPs situation) I do not change my stance.

You’ve no idea what the “bad chest” the OP’s father had was, nor his age. So you’re assertion about his low risk level is pure speculation

but continue feeling that everyone should simply “move on” regardless

As I said. Lucky you.

howver since someone - not you I will be clear - has taken to bring vile in PM I’ll be bowing out of this thread and any other on covid. The nastiness of some has utterly defeated my faith in humanity.

I would just urge people to remember that for some covid IS still an issue that is fucking dangerous and dismissing everyone as pathetic says far more about you than is does them trying to keep their vulnerable relatives alive a little longer

Lenald · 25/12/2022 21:09

your imagination is wild 😜

ChellyT · 25/12/2022 23:11

Absolutely ridiculous CF that you and your family won't test to give your parents/rest of the family peace of mind! Oh boo hoo the children will be mildly put out by a nasal swab! The absolute BS thrown around by anti covid dimwits too FFS

ilovesooty · 26/12/2022 01:08

@JustLyra I hope you reported that PM.

I went to a friend's today and her husband's relatives who I've never met were there. I don't test regularly but did test before I went. No one asked me to but his sister is nearly 80. I sincerely hope that the coughing 13 year old who came wasn't coming down with something though. He was moaning and said he was aching.

TarasHarp55 · 26/12/2022 01:46

Surely there'll be fine with vaccinations. That's what they're for, protection from it surely

TarasHarp55 · 26/12/2022 01:48

What happens in supermarkets. Do they ask every customer to be tested.? Doesn't make sense.

Miss03852 · 26/12/2022 02:49

YANBU. They are extremely unpleasant to do and I’m sure your parents are still shopping and going out so they’ll constantly be exposed to people who potentially have it.

All you can do is get boosted and improve indoor air quality.

You cannot keep demanding people test, wear masks, etc. As an aside it seems these have done little irl. People have gone back to normal, maybe you feel
you cannot with your past history, it is your right to keep them out of your home tho and live like it’s 2020 forever
