My daughter is booked in Wed for vaccine at GP , She's 14 and a county runner plus keen tennis player but since the Miami Opens this week she's refusing point blank .

Do i double down and remove games and Wi-Fi or let this go
Seriously any help would be appreciated

I don't think you can blackmail her into this sometimes it become more a point of being told to do something and them pushing back.

leave it to her then go back to it a few months.

stripeymadness · 03/04/2022 17:12

Keep it in perspective @clairclogg - it would be better for your DD to be vaccinated, but the risk from COVID is very low.

I would just make sure she's making an informed decision, give her some reputable sources on vaccination for her age group with the pros/cons listed, and leave her to it.

What has changed her mind and what does the Miami opens have to do with it?

Willdoitlater · 03/04/2022 17:13

You can't force her, but do make sure she is aware of the risks of long covid.

MargosKaftan · 03/04/2022 17:14

Why is she only just booked in now ? Has she been refusing earlier when they vaxxed in schools or did you not want her vaxxed then? What's changed to book her in so late and why the sudden rush - are you travelling somewhere she needs to be vaxxed this summer?

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/04/2022 17:16

Why force her?

MargosKaftan · 03/04/2022 17:16

Oh and I thought the miami open illnesses had been confirmed as dull old food poisoning. People who get sick with the vaxx tend to get ill immediately/within 48 hours. None of those competitors had been vaxxed within the last fortnight.

But as you'd happily left it for half a year since she was able to get the vax, why rush now?

stripeymadness · 03/04/2022 17:17

Ah I've had a look on twitter - so more disinformation about vaccines

In that case I would have a chat with her about evidence based sources @clairclogg, because if this is what is making her mind up then she's being coerced by anti-vaccine groups & their fake claims. It is so frustrating that these groups are removing the choice of informed decision making from people.

As I said, provide her with reputable sources, explain that there have been a LOT of unfounded claims about vaccination particularly in regards to athletes, and let her make her own mind up.

MichelleScarn · 03/04/2022 17:18

Maybe she just doesn't want it and feels empowered enough now to say a firm no?

stripeymadness · 03/04/2022 17:20

@MichelleScarn

She isn't empowered if she's been scared into turning it down by disinformation @MichelleScarn

I would say that is the opposite of informed decision making

MichelleScarn · 03/04/2022 17:28

How do you know she's 'scared by disinformation'? Op only says she's refused it?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/04/2022 17:28

Will she go to the appointment and have a 2 way conversation with the HCP who is giving it? Reassure her that if she still doesn’t want it after having her questions answered you won’t force her.

If she will, can you give the surgery the heads up so that they can look at the source of this latest misinformation and be ready to explain things to her in an appropriate way for a 14 year old.,

Svara · 03/04/2022 17:30

She's 14, her choice to decline it for now, she may change her mind later. I wouldn't coerce her, no.

stripeymadness · 03/04/2022 17:33

In the OP @MichelleScarn

but since the Miami Opens this week she's refusing point blank.

Anti-vaccine groups are trying to claim that players have dropped out of the games with injuries & illness caused by vaccination. It is ridiculous given that none of the players were vaccinated recently, and is like saying every incidence of illness or injury in a vaccinated person must be due to vaccines, no matter how long ago they were vaccinated.

As I said, provide her with reputable sources, explain that there have been a LOT of unfounded claims about vaccination particularly in regards to athletes, and let her make her own mind up.

stripeymadness · 03/04/2022 17:34

Good shout to suggest she still attends the appointment to talk it through with a HCP, under the proviso she knows she can turn it down if she's still not convinced.

passport123 · 03/04/2022 17:35

Why is she so late in having it?

GivenchyDahhling · 03/04/2022 17:35

Forcing your teenage daughter to do something (and inflicting punishment for refusal amount to the same thing) to her body against her will is hardly a good message to be sending is it?

CompassPoint · 03/04/2022 17:35

I agree with stripeymadness show her some reputable information, encourage her to talk to other sensible and non-judgemental people about it and then leave her to decide, make it clear that it's her body, her choice.

Moral issues of doing so aside, you will get nowhere with trying to force her or coerce her. You need to give her the confidence to make clear, reputable evidence based decisions. Trying to coerce her to cave to pressure and have the vaccine is as dis-empowering as being swayed by disinformation, and is a terrible precedent to set in the long run.

SausagePourHomme · 03/04/2022 17:35

Outrageous to punish her for exercising autonomy. Its her choice not to have it at this age. I believe in the vaccine but no one should be forced

MakingShiteMemories · 03/04/2022 17:36

Same here.
FrankLeeSpeaking · 03/04/2022 17:37

She's 14, so if she can articulate her reasons, I'd let her make that choice.
If she comes out with BS misinformation about vaccines, I'd offer counter evidence and let her make her mind up.

At that age you really can't force them into routine medical care.

Hope90x · 03/04/2022 17:37

Sensitive subject for many people, obviously, but you are CRAZY if you are even considering coercing your teenage daughter into this.

I can only imagine the uproar if you were considering coercing her into abortion etc.
Her body, her choice.

Also, the COVID risk to her age group is miniscule.

Unsureaboutit9 · 03/04/2022 17:37

I think it would be absolutely wrong to punish her for not wanting a vaccine, you don’t own her body, it’s her body and her choice. Like others have said I’d try and show her facts and reassure her it’s safe but if she choose not to have it you can’t force her, and luckily she can change her mind any time she wants.

user1419 · 03/04/2022 17:38

Good for her for making her own mind up. Shame on you for punishing her.

Longdistance · 03/04/2022 17:40

She’s 14, it’s her choice. My dd1 turned 12, she was up for the first one, when it came to the second one, she wasn’t as keen. It was just the pain she was frightened of. She eventually came round to the idea.

sandybeaches74 · 03/04/2022 17:41

Wtaf... punishing her for making her own choice when the likelihood of her becoming seriously ill is tiny. Utterly unreasonable. The world has gone mad.
