End of isolation

Boris Johnson has indicated the requirement to isolate after a positive Covid test will be scrapped at the end of this month. All I can say is about time too! Let's get back to life.

@Blubells

Do teachers have some sort of Covid-repelling superpowers?

No but they have an immune system as well as the option to get vaccinated!

Unless you happen to be an immunocompromised teacher of course
siestalady · 09/02/2022 13:26

@DoctorSnortles

Fucking marvellous. Schools will continue to be great fun to work in. All the folk who talk about how 'the poor children have suffered enough' let's see how you like it when teaching staff drop like flies and your precious moppets are back to remote learning.
Its funny how its only the teachers who 'drop like flies'

I really hope you're not a teacher, you dont seem to like children or value education very much.

DoctorSnortles · 09/02/2022 13:28

@siestalady Oooh. You meanie. I'll cry all night now.

Why are the teachers dropping like flies? Have they not been vaccinated?

Let's be honest we're at a point now where almost everyone's had it or is going to get it regardless of restrictions.

There comes a point when the education of a generation has to become a priority again.

toomuchlaundry · 09/02/2022 13:30

Every teacher I know who has had COVID recently have been ill for a number of days, so wouldn’t matter what the isolation rules are, they would have still been off. So not sure whether this will help schools, certainly in the short term

CorneliusVetch · 09/02/2022 13:30

Who are the 300 odd dying daily then

Many will be the unvaccinated.

HelloMist · 09/02/2022 13:31

I also think the timing of this (just like the ending of plan B) is needed by Boris and co as a distraction. That's not how to make public health decisions.

toomuchlaundry · 09/02/2022 13:31

@girlmom21 I’m assuming teachers are getting hit with a higher viral load than most other people as they are surrounded by non-vaccinated young people

girlmom21 · 09/02/2022 13:31

Any many will be dying with covid, not from it.
DoctorSnortles · 09/02/2022 13:32

Teachers have been vaccinated but still catch it. You might have heard that this can happen. I am currently at home, feeling very unwell with Covid, despite having all my jabs.

Some people are either too thick or too bloody minded to see that this decision is a terrible one for schools, the vulnerable and people who work in the NHS and Health and Social care.

Of course but they'll be developing antibodies etc by now.

I don't think it'll be any worse for them than it has been for the last 6 months.

treeflowercat · 09/02/2022 13:34

If you're immunocompromised to the extent that Covid is a major threat to you, then sadly teaching really isn't a suitable career for you.... And that would be the case even if Covid didn't exist!

Delatron · 09/02/2022 13:34

Why are we making this about teachers again?

What about all the other professions that are public facing? Doctors/nurses/shop assistants.. Most people who work in those environments have been exposed multiple times and have either had it or built up some immunity to it.

Pootle40 · 09/02/2022 13:34

I agree, there are certain people who really want to portray teachers as a special species.

^THIS!
Delatron · 09/02/2022 13:34

Yes doctors don’t drop like flies.
Or supermarket workers.

PinkPansies · 09/02/2022 13:35

I'd love to hear what the long term plan would be instead from the 'you selfish bastards' brigade.

Seriously...what? Keep testing and isolating for ever, shutting things down? For a virus with an overwhelmingly high survival rate?

Viruses pick off the old and the weak. They always have and covid is largely no different in that respect.

It might be an unpalatable reality but it is reality none the less. You can't stop the world forever because of the tiny percentage of the population at serious risk.

StarCat2020 · 09/02/2022 13:35

The issue isn't just deaths, it is the mayhem it will cause in the NHS

Delatron · 09/02/2022 13:36

We’ve passed the peak of Omicron now. Isolation is causing more harm than the virus. And the government know that..

Bunn5 · 09/02/2022 13:37

As a CV person currently with Covid I am pleased about this!

Covid has been like a stinking cold for me. I haven’t felt like doing much but easily would’ve been able to to take & collect my daughter from school and to her various clubs.

Instead, my husband has had to do the school run but due to his working hours, DD has missed out on lots of clubs etc.

I live right by a huge beach (can see it from my lounge window) and haven’t been able to walk along it and get some fresh, sea air that would probably do me good in my recovery.

If I had contracted Covid in a months time when isolation is abolished, I would be sensible and stay away from the office, shops and other crowded places but I would do the school run and I would go for a walk in a wide open space.

Small things but will make all the difference.

The majority of people will be sensible. Of course there are selfish people who will not consider others but they’ve probably always been like that with other very infectious viruses such as Norovirus and colds/coughs.

I think teachers just need to make their own decisions on if they want to carry on teaching or not. It's funny how covid is seen as the be all and end all but not things like noro or flu. If I was training as a teacher I would know that kids are germ pits and it is part of the territory

The impact on children is huge.

PinkPansies · 09/02/2022 13:40

The issue isn't just deaths, it is the mayhem it will cause in the NHS

But that's increasingly unlikely with milder variants.

If the NHS started to suffer they could always change it back.

Personally I suspect there will be no difference.

Suzi888 · 09/02/2022 13:40

Thank God for that. My staff can get on with their actual jobs instead of paying grants.

Bunn5 · 09/02/2022 13:41

100% this!!!!

A great example is our local Royal Mail sorting office which had a massive Covid outbreak before Christmas. Such a huge portion of staff were off with Covid that the area of our town had no post for over 2 weeks. Our lovely postman told me that so many residents were rude, impatient and complained that their POST wasn’t delivered!!!!

If this had been teachers, it would’ve been a very different story in my opinion.

treeflowercat · 09/02/2022 13:41

I don't envy teachers here, but what difference is isolation really making? So many teachers off anyway! Attempting to slow Covid waves by isolating and other restrictions just spreads out the infections over a longer period time, increasing the likelihood of one variant wave merging another variant wave, and causing a near permanent state of disruption for schools rather than a quick short, if sharp, episodes.
