From the Scottish dashboard. Anyone know what this means?

They only count hospitalisations if it's the first infection???

sirfredfredgeorge · 01/03/2022 15:21

containsnuts I think that just means someone who goes out and comes in (ie someone attends A&E "admission, goes home, later returns to hospital.) are only counted as one admission, not that it only counts if it was covid in 2020.

But of course I could be wrong.

I wondered if it meant they don't count hospitalisations if it's a reinfection, only if it's the first time a person tests positive via PCR?
DivGirl · 01/03/2022 16:23

@containsnuts I think you’re right. Until today they only counted cases/deaths if it was the first infection and the hospital data is a couple of days behind. I’ve just clicked through the (nightmare of a) website and can’t find anything that says either way other than the detailed analysis that says “a patient’s first positive test for COVID-19 up to 14 days prior to admission to hospital, on the day of their admission, or during their stay in hospital.”

Like the above poster I could be wrong though. It’s very confusing wording.

health metrics for England; overall and by NHS regions. 2020, 2021, 2022 figures comparisons and the current Feb/March vs the 2021 position.

Starting with probably the most positive of all numbers in mechanical ventilator beds. 7 day average now at 250, around seven times lower than the equivalent point last year.

as a follow up this slightly odd looking graph shows when the ventilator bed number has fallen below a 250 seven day average

in 2020 between end June and end September

in 2021 between last week of April and end of June.

As this graph makes a bit clearer the lowest level in 2020 was 55; and 113 in 2021 - again seven day average figures

deaths within 28 days by date of death continue to fall - again seven day average with just over a week's lag built in to reflect how deaths get reported through.

It just shows what a difference vaccinations have made and how dangerous this virus still is:

Sorry that I'm popping in and out of these threads now but the SW hospital numbers (and the others, to a lesser extent) are surprising to me - is it that it's hitting more now than it was last year (with a more contagious variant)?

I'm in the SW and it feels like everyone I know only started getting it here in recent months. But I guess I'm surprised people are in hospital in such large numbers compared to the tail end of last winter's huge peak.

…so what are the causes for this, are the actual numbers of people currently infected increasing (but no longer being recorded in any meaningful way to reflect this.)
Or has the virus changed again?
Anyone here that can enlighten us?

lonelyplanet · 04/03/2022 16:57

According to the ons cases in England are decreasing.

lonelyplanet · 04/03/2022 17:01

Maybe to do with this this?

Possibly vaccine waning.

wintertravel1980 · 05/03/2022 03:20

Cases in England have gone up this week based on the dashboard data.
Looks like the recent increase in hospitalisations might be a combination of the (i) general increase in prevalence and (ii) waning boosters.
