Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

Sorry cross-posted.

I don't want to get your hopes up too much. It's early days with the studies - but also there's a global shortage of the monoclonal antibodies. For now, our very limited supply is being used to treat Covid (and that has had to be rationed).

Still - there's no harm in asking about it, for the future hopefully not too long away when there's wider availability. And obviously more treatments are being looked into, so fingers crossed.

Sorry it might not help for the time being but it's something to be hopeful about for the future.

@Tealightsandd don’t worry, I understood that it was probably in its early days. Smile

I find it’s good to ask early to be on the radar… then sometimes you get listened to more when you listen again.

Our gp is very good, which is good! So she may be willing to look into it.

My mum saved my life by suggesting a new medication when I was four and that kind of inspired my to always speak up!

Aimeehedge · 21/01/2022 01:02

Thank you

Tealightsandd · 21/01/2022 01:04

A good GP is a huge plus.

I hope things eventually improve for you .

So looking forward to not having to wear one! Glasses steaming up have been a real issue despite trying all the suggestions people have offered me. Feel quite unsafe at times trying to walk with misted vision. I have increasingly resorted to removing it from my nose to keep sane, and safe. I have given up going in shops etc unless essential as it's been so unpleasant.

Kokeshi123 · 21/01/2022 02:42

And again. Mitigations like masks, vaccine passes, and good ventilation (eg. HEPA filters) are what enable people to get on with work and life - without unnecessary risk of being killed or disabled. Whilst also protecting others.

Tea, they're doing all this in countries like France, and it appears to be making sod-all difference to omicron.

Perhaps this points less to masks worn in a social environment and more to infection spread in close environments, like the home?

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 21/01/2022 03:25

If anyone still wearing a mask then more fool you!

You'll say this a doctor, dentist or nurse, I'm sure. Hmm

@Tealightsandd

The safety measure is the vaccine. How many of the 300 deaths a day were triple vaccinated?

JellyOnAPlatewithicecream · 21/01/2022 05:52

There were 50,100 excess deaths in winter 2017-18 largely down to the flu, but you didn't see the public having to wear masks everywhere / WFH / having restrictions placed on their daily lives. So yes covid is not flu, but now we have the vaccine it can start to be treated as such.

LondonQueen · 21/01/2022 06:45

Me!

MenopauseSucks · 21/01/2022 06:53

In medical settings - yes.

Transport - if trains/TfL request it then yes

If I'm in a situation when the poor staff are still having to wear one - eg a shop or restaurant - then I'll wear one in solidarity!

So basically, if asked to do so then yes I will. I've never worn them outside.

Againstmachine · 21/01/2022 07:11

Well what's the point in asking then? Unless genuinely unable to wear one (a small minority), it is selfish, and shows utter disregard for the vulnerable (who will include newly disabled Long Covid sufferers).

Even though people have worn them they are still selfish, stop chucking that word about it's become so misused.

Vunerable people should be protecting theirselves with correct masks then it doesn't matter if others don't.

BackToThe0IdHouse · 21/01/2022 07:11

@JaniieJones

Can't wait. Like everyone I've found them unpleasant and uncomfortable to use. It will be great to ditch them.
You've spent the last year and a half saying that exemptions shouldn't exist, wear a mask it's not hard, etc and actually got quite nasty with people who say they can't wear one or find them unpleasant to wear, stop whining and so on. You've called.people selfish for not wearing one as well. Maybe you could've been more understanding than you were, after all you now admit you found them unpleasant too.

I'll keep wearing mine until cases are lower at least. I'm surprised you're not Janiie given how you have thought for the longest time everyone else should even if they find it very difficult

shouldistop · 21/01/2022 07:14

Me, definitely. I need to wear one all day at work, it gives me a headache, dry mouth, spots and fogs my glasses up.
I'm in Scotland though so it will be the 32nd of julember 4055 before we're allowed as chief mammy is keeping us all safe Hmm

BackToThe0IdHouse · 21/01/2022 07:26

[quote Emergency73]I will wear one. Because of this:

Exactly

@JaniieJones why are you suddenly not worried about vulnerable people when for months you have said we all need to wear masks to protect them

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/01/2022 07:27

I will. I only really wear one when in Tesco now tbh

MaverickSnoopy · 21/01/2022 07:31

Nope I'll carry on. I don't know anyone who will stop.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/01/2022 07:31

Masks are going whether people like it or not. Not much anyone can do about it. The word "selfish" is so boring now, everyone has been selfish at some point during the pandemic, people will do what's best for them and their loved ones.

SueSaid · 21/01/2022 07:34

'You've spent the last year and a half saying that exemptions shouldn't exist, wear a mask it's not hard,'

I've spent the last 2 years saying no one likes wearing them, no one. However if we have to wear them more should do so, except those genuinely exempt with specific issues, not self diagnosed.

'I'll keep wearing mine until cases are lower at least. I'm surprised you're not'

Why, we're heading out of it?!

Yes, cases in France are very high
