Who is planning to ditch masks as soon as we are legally allowed?

Is anyone else planning to ditch the masks asap? The only reason I wear one atm is because of the legal mandate and it will go as soon as that's dropped.

If you are staunchly pro-mask then this is probably not the thread for you! I know all the arguments on both side and they have been fully rehearsed on this board for the last 2 years. I am simply interested to gauge how many people also want to ditch masks asap, when the law allows.

It would be fab if we could have a thread on this topic that didn't include the words- selfish, it's no hardship, why wouldn't you?, we're in a pandemic ffs, I wear my mask to protect others etc.... that's lovely, and we already know!

Yep, I will

IcedPurple · 19/01/2022 15:21

@toomuchlaundry

I've quite liked being able to clean the handles on trolleys at supermarkets after reading many threads on here about people who don't wash their hands after going to the toilet. Some people replay are disgusting creatures.

I know a few germs are good for us but not washing your hands after going to the loo is rank

You've always been 'able' to clean supermarket trolley handles if you felt the need. Just bring a pack of wet wipes with you.

Meeeee!

They’re unhygienic, claustrophobic, they make me feel panicky & they smudge my make up.

Good riddance

Unhygienic - hit the nail on the head! Shoved in and out of jacket pockets, handbags, glove compartments, sat on tables in public areas, worn endlessly with no washing or changing... then worn on the face as some sort of public health measure?! Good riddance indeed.
Iggly · 19/01/2022 15:25

@IcedPurple

Would you be happy being exposed to Ebola? Rabies?

What a silly question. These are both extremely dangerous viruses, vastly more so than Sars Cov 2.

Personally, having been fully vaccinated and boostered, I'm quite happy to be exposed to Omnicron. Given how infectious it is, I, you and everyone else is going to be exposed to it no matter what we do. You're obviously free to take the precautions you deem necessary, but the rest of us may choose to make different risk assessments.

How is it a silly question?

After all, we just need to build immunity.

Iggly · 19/01/2022 15:30

@TheMerrickBoy

We do need public health measures, yes, and that is how I see vacines and antivirals.

I would not be happy to be exposed to ebola or rabies because I haven't been vaccinated against them and both are almost invariably fatal.

And there is evidence that the vaccines aren’t long lasting and we may end up in a situation where numbers shoot up as boosters wear off.

I don’t understand why they just didn’t want a couple more weeks, but, oh Boris.

Flyonawalk · 19/01/2022 15:31

So compulsory mask wearing ends in the U.K. next week, 27th January?

That doesn't leave a lot of leeway. I don't plan to ditch them, I just think they're a sensible precaution and, in fact, it's no hardship.

IcedPurple · 19/01/2022 15:32

How is it a silly question?

If you can't see the difference between viruses with extremely high fatality rates, and a virus which many people need a test to know they even have it, then I won't waste any more time trying to explain it to you.

Unless you're being deliberately obtuse?

In England.

I've got good news for you. It's really incredibly easy to get round the hygiene problem for your own mask. It's this amazing invention called washing.

TheMerrickBoy · 19/01/2022 15:33

@Iggly - but you can't build immunity if you're dead, which you almost certainly would be from rabies or ebola, but are much less likely to be from covid.

It's a silly question because they're not comparable.

BeefSupreme · 19/01/2022 15:34

What country are you in, op?

My point is that coronavirus is a new virus and may have health implications which we don’t know about yet.

So why would we go and expose ourselves and our children to it (under 12s get no vaccine protection)?

We don’t know where this virus came from.

There’s evidence that this virus does more than just gives people cold symptoms.

Also evidence that in some asymptomatic cases, it may actually cause damage that we don’t know about until something presents later on down the line?

There isn’t enough evidence to say that it’s ok to just let it run wild without any measures at all.

I don’t count vaccines because we don’t have a long term credible vaccine for it yet!

Iggly · 19/01/2022 15:36

It’s not silly - covid is a novel virus.

We don’t know what long term impact it has. We don’t even know where it came from!

TheMerrickBoy · 19/01/2022 15:37

It's been two years though, and we definitely know that vaccines make a massive difference. None of this is to say that there is no danger at all to anyone, but I think we're certainly in a position to say it is less lethal than either rabies or ebola.

Vargas · 19/01/2022 15:39

Only when legally required, or if I've got symptoms of a cold and I'm in a busy place.

Can't wait to lose them.

I agree, it is less lethal but I don’t feel happy that children don’t get vaccinated (whereas they do from polio which is probably more comparable).

And I’m not happy that we don’t know the long term implications of being infected by covid.

If it was just a bad flu strain, then my thinking would be different. But it’s not the flu.

GoldenOmber · 19/01/2022 15:42

Hmm The covid vaccines have saved many many many lives, and prevented a great deal of serious illnesses. Vaccines are one of the best scientific inventions humans have ever come up with for preventing suffering and death. I’m sorry if you’re cross that people prefer them to whatever sort of indefinite social distancing you’d like to see, but ‘I don’t count vaccines’ is just a bizarre thing to say.

SantaClawsServiette · 19/01/2022 15:43

Well, sure, we don't know if there may be longer term effects, but that sort of thing is not unheard of with other infections either.

But it doesn't matter in a way - everyone will be exposed over time, so the only way to avoid that is to go live in Antarctica. Not at the station, though, they have had covid there - you will have to live alone.

They've made a link recently between mono, which is also endemic, and MS. It's very interesting and suggestive of ways to maybe tackle MS. But no one is going to avoid mono by wearing a mask forever.

IcedPurple · 19/01/2022 15:44

My point is that coronavirus is a new virus and may have health implications which we don’t know about yet.

Lots of things we don't know in life. But this virus has been around for 2 years so we do know quite a lot about it. Obviously not long-term effects, if any, but we can't impose restrictions for 10 years 'just in case'.

Besides, and to repeat, nobody is stopping you from wearing a mask or doing whatever you see fit for your 'safety'. But others will not share your fears and are also free to act accordingly.

Blubells · 19/01/2022 15:45

I don’t count vaccines because we don’t have a long term credible vaccine for it yet!

Personally I would definitely count vaccines as having saved lots of lives without disrupting our lives too much.

I find it absolutely bizarre that you don't count vaccines (which have demonstrably decimated people's chances of severe disease) and you do count masks for which there is very little credible evidence they make significant difference.

That strikes me as one of the most unscientific comments I've ever read on here.

Comedycook · 19/01/2022 15:56

I still remember at the start of the pandemic them telling us that masks weren't necessary for the general public. I will ditch as soon as I can.
