Why I'm angry about the May parties at Downing Street - share your stories

ThirdTimeIucky · 11/01/2022 17:39

No agenda, just a whinge to demonstrate rhe millions of individual reasons people are angry about BYOB parties in Downing Street whilst the rest of us were in Lockdown. I've heard so many stories of loved ones dying alone, loneliness and heartbreak.

For me, when the party took place on the 20th, I had been struggling in a domestic abuse situation for months. In lockdown. I'd been on my own trying to deal with this situation. I felt like I was trapped. It was an incredibly painful and difficult time of my life. Three days later, feeling terribly guilty, and despite the restrictions, if went to my sisters as the situation had become so bad. But because of those restrictions, I stayed in that situation for so much longer than I should have done.

Exactly. Claiming superiority over people who followed actual legislation.

What, do they drive on the right as well? Smoke in pubs? Just punch random people in the street?

Such cool rule breakers after all.

Mouseonmychair · 13/01/2022 09:23

I was angry because I don't agree with locking down. I believe in survival of the fittest and death being a natural part of natural selection. If we needed to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed then do what we already do through nice and ration care to keep under capacity.

Mouseonmychair · 13/01/2022 09:24

I did following the rules though because I respect the laws of the country I live in.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 13/01/2022 09:29

There are dozens of people on here talking about how children died without goodbyes from family members. Woman going through stillbirths alone. Healthy 30 year olds dying alone and terrified.

Your belief in survival of the fittest is the very narrowest thing you could have brought to this thread.

I think you are confused about what NICE does and who was vulnerable to Covid. They evaluate effectiveness of treatment. They don’t evaluate lives.

Out of interest - does that mean you refuse all medical care when ill?
merrymouse · 13/01/2022 09:41

Also, the NHS wasn’t in danger of becoming overwhelmed because it was administering life saving treatments. Just basic end of life palliative care requires beds and staff.

I wish people would think more.

Don't forget to pop over to the cancer threads to tell people there that it's survival of the fittest and that they shouldn't be pursuing chemo or radiation treatment. Or the premature births threads to tell them that their babies shouldn't be in NICU because it's survival of the fittest.

In fact, following your logic presumably we shouldn't be vaccinating at all against anything, let alone covid?

As someone diagnosed with cancer in 2020 — fuck off.

Thank you. Daffodil I’m currently “no evidence of disease”, albeit still on drugs to prevent recurrence. Probably going to outlive PP.

I believe that there are some things that governments shouldn't be able to do. Even if it is, absolutely and unambiguously, for the greater good.
So many of these rules that caused such suffering and misery should never have been possible and were well beyond what I consider the legitimate scope of governmental powers to be.

Regardless of whether you agreed with the rules or not, this thread is about the anger that people feel due to the government not following its own rules.

I really don't want to debate the rights and wrongs of whether we should have had lockdown or not. It's done, we can't get that time back. What I do want to do, is express my rage at the fact that the people setting the rules - including the Prime Minister himself - thought it was acceptable to break the rules despite literally sanctioning the arrests of Joe Public for infractions. Many people, including me, drew some small comfort that we were all in the same boat, and that everyone was having to do their bit. To find out that actually the officials setting these policies and who therefore had zero excuse for not following the letter and spirit of the rules, were ignoring them, is a bitter pill to swallow.

Always let your conscience be your guide.

BackBackBack · 13/01/2022 13:27

@McSilkson so tell me, I should have stormed my mum's care home then? Physically broke in and refused to take no for an answer? I should have ignored the people queuing at the supermarket and just walked in ahead of them?

I find your comparison between this pandemic and Nazi Germany to be unbelievably offensive.

kickupafuss · 13/01/2022 13:29

I don't want to share my story because it's too personal but today I feel very tearful and angry. The so called apology yesterday has made things worse. To me, it feels like he was implying we could have all stretched the rules and now I feel totally stupid for following them. It's such a kick in the teeth.

I remember reading on here about people not following the rules and just doing 'what is right for my family'. I thought they were selfish but now I realise they were right and I was wrong. I hate Johnson for what he has done.

HotHointheavo · 13/01/2022 13:30

My instant response is that because lawmakers just cannot get away with being lawbreakers

But honestly because they have ridden roughshod over the lives of so many facing the worst of horrors. They have chewed us up and spat us out!!!! They have literally laughed in our faces.

My heart breaks

Curiousmouse · 13/01/2022 13:41

He should go, to try to show that they are not all completely contemptuous of us.

the80sweregreat · 13/01/2022 14:05

Why bring in the rules in the first place then ?
So many threads back then of people completely non plussed about what to do for the best and so on. Maybe we could have all broken the rules ? Who knew it would be so easy to do without any repercussions?
I know that many didn't follow them to the letter , but millions did and it was those people who feel just completely worn down and disappointed by it all. Plus in many places and situations you couldn't not comply too.

BackBackBack · 13/01/2022 14:32

To the people who are posting on here telling us that we should have challenged the rules and pushed back. Please stop. Just stop. You are being breathtakingly insensitive and cruel to people who have already been through enough.

Don't feel stupid @kickupafuess because you aren't. You also did what you thought was "right for your family" which was to follow the rules.

I do know exactly how you feel - the kick in the teeth feeling, that you've been taken for a mug or a fool. Because I feel exactly the same. But at the time we were doing what we honestly believed was right, which doesn't make you a mug at all. Ignore the "I told you so" brigade. You did what you thought was right and you can be proud to stand by that.

I hope you feel a bit less wobbly today. It's been such a rollercoaster for us all hasn't it?

canary1 · 13/01/2022 15:13

They have chewed us up, spat us out. And have stolen our public money before they go on their merry way 😡😡😡

Francescaisstressed · 13/01/2022 16:51

Honestly, the way these threads deviate is absolutely disgusting. Thank you for gloating about how much of an idiot I am for following the rules that I didn't get to say bye for all my family members. How foolish of me to actually listen to the government and have social responsibility for other.s.I will remind my grieving family, how my Uncle having cancer treatments death was simply just survival of the fittest. Absolute scum of the earth of here.

Ecosralayce · 13/01/2022 17:04

Oh, so many of these stories are so heatbreaking and make me so, so angry for you all.
I work in mental health.
All of our therapy groups were cancelled,(as directed by the government) day centres were effectively shut, all of the community acitivites which provided a lifeline to many of our patients were all on hold indefintiely.
Many of our patients were living alone, desperatley in need of support, which we were unable to provide. Many, many people expereinced prolonged and significant deteriorations in their mental health due to this.
I was working ridiculously long hours, whilst looking after my family and attempting to home school my children.
I hadn't seen my parents for 6 months and wondered if I might actually never see my very elderly frail dad again.
So, yeah, partying wasn't really the first thing on my mind tbh.Our work meetings certainly didnt involve wine, and the only thanks we ever got was a load of pan banging on a Thursday evening.
So, thanks for that Boris.
