Are there cases in your school?

With Omicron cases currently so high, do you know of positive cases in your children's schools yet? Is it primary or secondary?

Yes, several that I've heard about. Primary. (Not DC's class - yet!).

I have no idea. All classes/year groups are still in, although not all staff are in (I believe classes are condensed to the hall where a member of SLT supervises ‘revision’ for all pupils without a teacher). I have decided to assume that the dc are in contact with positive cases every day. The school aren’t going to let us know every positive that is rung in, so it’s easier to assume they are close contacts (not that we do anything different for that) than that school is case free.
We LFT regularly, especially if we are seeing older family members.

Blubells · 11/01/2022 14:49

Well given that some of the staff who caught it over Xmas still aren't back (because they're not fit enough to work, despite being out of isolation) I doubt it.

They must be very unlucky.

noblegiraffe · 11/01/2022 14:52

More likely if you're a teacher - stats show second highest rates of long covid in teaching as a profession.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 11/01/2022 15:11

I worked at local high school last week doing lfts for years 7-13

Out of over 1000 tests we had 1 positive result!

Chosenonesneakymincepie · 11/01/2022 15:20

I teach at a medium sized Secondary nad we have 22 kids off with covid and 3 members of staff. I see the list so that work can be provided for student self isolating. Nothing official is said to anyone.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 11/01/2022 15:24

My school have said they'll let us know case numbers and classes (state primary, london).

MaizeAmaze · 11/01/2022 16:48

DS2 (primary) warn and inform letter
DS1 (secondary) no idea. Cant believe it isn't lots given the number he know who tested positive on first day back.
My secondary: about 10%. Don't think anything has been sent to parents other than "rates are high in this area, please test twice a week and PCR if symptoms"

Marmelace · 11/01/2022 16:53

My sons is secondary and it's rife there. His teacher has it, my son has it as does everyone in my house now. We are all exhausted

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/01/2022 16:56

There must be but haven't heard.

usernotfound0000 · 11/01/2022 17:19

Primary school. None that school have made us aware of. However, there were 10 children off from DDs class of 30 yesterday and today, I know one is definitely covid as I know their mum, and I can only assume the others are. 2 of the others sit next to the child that I know is positive. DD is a close contact but I've had nothing from school or test and trace (don't even know how it currently works!).

theemperorhasnoclothes · 11/01/2022 17:47

Just found out that DD sat next to a child off with covid yesterday (tested positive this morning). Found out via her friends, not the school of course (what happened to close contacts doing lfts? Apparently not happening?). At least she was wearing an ffp2 mask, I guess we'll find out how much protection that gives when there's no social distancing in a cramped and unventilated classroom with no air filtration.

Bless her she's wanting to do a test every day to 'protect her sister'.

I have to say the children at secondary are behaving much more responsibly than the government - they're the one informing each other about being close contacts.

If only our government gave as much of a shit.

Bananarice · 11/01/2022 19:32

I only know that a positive staff member was a close contact with ds2, who now needs to do lft daily.

LadyPenelope68 · 11/01/2022 19:45

Yes, loads of children and staff including me (Year 6 teacher).

Meadowblossom · 11/01/2022 19:47

Yes. Do you remember when the government said children don’t spread it, schools are safe. No need for teachers to worry…

Dutchesss · 11/01/2022 19:50

About 2% of the school currently. Just before October half term it was near 20%!

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/01/2022 20:01

I don't think the government have ever actually said children don't spread it.

I think those kind of conversations were at least 2 variants ago and were more along the lines of young children are not likely to get seriously ill and if they do have it will have few or no symptoms.

Now with the current variant they are catching it but still not likely to get seriously ill or have few or no symptoms.

Much they same as thrice jabbed teachers.

So no need for teachers to worry. Smile

Its time to live with this.

Are you for real???? 😡
I’m a thrice jabbed teacher, currently really unwell with COVID. What an idiot you are.

blameitonthecaffeine · 11/01/2022 20:47

To be fair it does seem to be quite unlucky not to be able to return to work or school after the isolation period. I know dozens on people who've had it since late December and all have been fully fit by day 7 or day 10 at worst. Many not ill at all. Some will be badly affected, of course, but I can't see how it can be many.

I don't know where you are but I'm Scotland sitting next to/in a class with someone who tests positive is not considered to be close contact, even in primary where they'll spend up to 6 hours a day together.
SmallElephant · 11/01/2022 21:00

Secondary school here. Fewer than I'd expected. There were a lot more cases (both pupils and teachers) back in October.

noblegiraffe · 11/01/2022 22:35

We've only been back a week...

Blubells · 11/01/2022 22:38

Secondary school here. No classes or lessons negatively affected so far.

noblegiraffe · 11/01/2022 22:55

None of them in the whole school?

JugglingJanuary · 11/01/2022 23:00

@TheKeatingFive

Probably, but don't know or particularly care.
Yet you still felt the need to open the thread & post. What a surprise.
