With Omicron cases currently so high, do you know of positive cases in your children's schools yet? Is it primary or secondary?

Yes, several that I've heard about. Primary. (Not DC's class - yet!).

Ds was singing at the table as messages from friends came in:

"Another school bites the dust
Another school bites the dust
And another school gone and another school gone
Another school bites the dust
Hey Covid's gonna get you too
Another school bites the dust"

Several across the school.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 10/01/2022 21:33

You are only told now if a close contact. At least one in a small Primary. At least one in dds Secondary. Sadly it is one of her A Level Teachers.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 10/01/2022 21:36

So that's more lessons cancelled as they dont get supply when she sits her A Levels this year.

MissPeregrine · 10/01/2022 21:45

No idea in DS’s secondary school! We aren’t informed and I get minimal information home.

LuluBlakey1 · 10/01/2022 21:49

Our local secondary has 20% of their staff off and are sending a different year group to work at home each day. DH's school- he's a Head not a student- has 15 staff off but mainly support staff so they are managing with teaching.
DC's first school has cases in each year group and just 3 teaching staff off this week. It's quite a big first school though and they are managing.

Jamieson90 · 10/01/2022 23:53

I run catch up lessons across the school (primary) and I've been in contact with 3 different positive children over the last week, meaning my 7 days of testing has been reset each time. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing LFTs every day for the foreseable future with how prevalent it seems to be! I hope I can keep getting hold of test kits otherwise I've no idea what I'll do.

As for cases, I don't know the exact numbers - none of us have the time to find out we're all so run off our feet, but I'd say there are around 30 children off the moment (small 1 form primary) and currently 4 out of 30 staff.

Inner city, North West here.

noblegiraffe · 11/01/2022 00:09

Cases in my school? Yes

Cases in my classes? Yes

Cases who have tested positive in school after being in my class the same day? Yes

Cases who have had symptoms while in my class who went on to test positive? Yes

Of course I've not been told this, I just find out from the kids.

MarshmallowFondant · 11/01/2022 08:06

Schools won't give you numbers. We get a text saying "there has been a positive case identified in your child's year group" but that's over 200 people.

Haven't had a text since they went back last week, lots before Christmas so it seems to be calming down a bit round here anyway. But I'm not particularly concerend, DD had it before Christmas and none of the rest of us got it from her.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 11/01/2022 09:24

Loads of cases, loads and loads. I don't see how the small primary will still be open this time next week, they simply won't have enough staff at this rate.

I get the impression the primary is worse than the secondary this time around, but then that might just be because communication via primary is better. Or it could be the masks and some kids having been vaccinated in secondary (though the secondary kids mix a lot more which presumably should increase risk compared to primary classes which stay together). One thing's for sure - as soon as there's one case in a primary class then the pinging from emails telling you there's another case in that class starts.

Two year groups mostly out in the primary now, plus their teachers (both of whom had Delta - so herd immunity very much isn't a thing) - within 4 days, following one positive case on the second day. It's amazing how fast it's happened.

And there are staff who aren't coming back after isolation because they're still too poorly (of the ones who had it over Xmas).

For those who want us to 'live with it' - do we really want schools shut down from lack of staff every term as teachers catch variant after variant after variant.

And such high infection rates will be giving rise to more mutations. We're MORE likely to have new variants letting it rip like this.

So much for prioritising schools.

rooarsome · 11/01/2022 12:38

None, as far as I'm aware

Blubells · 11/01/2022 12:41

Loads of cases, loads and loads. I don't see how the small primary will still be open this time next week,

Reducing the isolation period to 5 days might help a little?

KatherineofGaunt · 11/01/2022 12:41

Yes, a letter went home this week saying to be aware there are cases in one year group in my primary school. No more information given.

I seem to have avoided Covid since last year, so am wondering if I'll be next to get it.

SLH2003 · 11/01/2022 12:57

Yes loads.

furbabymama87 · 11/01/2022 12:58

Also loads.

changingstages · 11/01/2022 13:12

yes, primary. I don't know how many in the school. DD's class had 13 out of 26 off by the end of last term and now it seems to be working through those who didn't get it then - there are at least six at the moment but more with siblings/parents who are positive so will probably get it. DD is also off but with a sickness bug, which feels quite retro.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 11/01/2022 13:28

Hi OP, yes in our primary. So far seem to have come in from households and then kid doesn't test positive til a few days in. I wonder how many more days off in total are taken or increase in cases due to non-isolation of household contacts.

DinoDora · 11/01/2022 13:42

20 staff have Covid in my son's private nursery. They're closing certain rooms to cope.

3 in my son's class own y3 class this week that we know of.

Numerous colleagues off last week and some testing positive this week; I don't know full numbers as head stopped telling us. So I only know those staff who contacted me this week. ( Im in tomorrow)

Last week there were roughly a few kids isolating in each class in my own school.

DinoDora · 11/01/2022 13:45

I'm ignoring the fact I feel a little sneezy

Lft neg today but will Do again tonight. Was v close contact with a now positive member of staff last week (working on a sodding piece of paperwork.)

Musicalmistress · 11/01/2022 13:51

Yes quite a few. aAlthough school are only required to send out a letter for the initial case in a class group and any subsequent cases within the same week parents aren't notified. If there are further cases after the 7days from the initial case then a 2nd letter is sent but - any further cases within the 7days after that letter parents aren't notified. 1 letter covers 7 days regardless of how many cases occur in that period so parents have no idea how many cases there actually are across the school. This is in Scotland - may just be advice from our NHS trust.
Horst · 11/01/2022 13:52

Pretty much the whole of reception are off in our school and over 50% of the reception teachers/helpers/ta’s.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 11/01/2022 13:53

Well given that some of the staff who caught it over Xmas still aren't back (because they're not fit enough to work, despite being out of isolation) I doubt it.
noblegiraffe · 11/01/2022 13:54

Yes, one of my colleagues who caught covid at the end of last term came back last week but is now off again.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 11/01/2022 13:56

A nursery near me has just shut. Too many staff sick.

FindingMeno · 11/01/2022 13:58

Secondary.
A lot of teachers.
Don't know with pupils.
