to speak about not having the vaccination

he has had a lot of support

In that case he should lose his job. He's not safe to work in a patient-facing role in a hospital. He needs to justify why he disagrees with the British Society of Immunology

In that case, all NHS staff who are not vaccinated should lose their jobs immediately. Why wait until spring to sack them?

Awakened22 · 11/01/2022 10:14

Pfizer CEO yesterday “ So and we know that the two doses of the vaccine offer very limited protection, if any. The three doses, with the booster, they offer reasonable protection against hospitalization and deaths and, again, that's, I think, very good-- and less protection against the infection”.

finance.yahoo.com/video/covid-19-vaccine-covers-omicron-144553437.html

If the mandates are about reducing infection/transmission risk in nhs workers, why are they not sacking anyone without boosters as well? And then they’ll have to sack anyone who doesn’t get the omicron version of the vaccine they’re developing.

The vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness and death in those at risk but seems like there is now minimal benefit in preventing infection.

I completely agree with you but there’s no point asking this as nobody actually answers it….

Unvaccinated NHS staff are either safe enough to look after patients or they aren’t.

And if they aren’t, why haven’t they all been sacked already?

They were/are good enough to work during the height of winter when everyone knew Covid pressures were going to be awful, but as soon as things calm down again suddenly they aren’t safe and must be fired.

My guess is that Boris Johnson is shitting himself about the threat he made because now he either has to swallow his pride and back down or he will have to watch as the NHS to falls apart.

People have answered it. They haven't been sacked immediately because the Tories have decided not to sack them until April when the NHS is less busy.

To give them a chance to get vaccinated if the want, surely?

Because of the time interval required between 1st and 2nd vaccinations and the time interval between 2nd and booster vaccinations.

It is only fair to give the unvaccinated the time to get fully vaccinated.

Florianus · 11/01/2022 10:38

It's nothing to do with "threats" from Boris Johnson. Mandatory vaccination for patient-facing NHS workers was decided upon by both Houses of Parliament last November (Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) (Amendment) (Coronavirus) (No. 2) Regulations 2021).

howdiditcometothis666 · 11/01/2022 10:39

I think some provinces in Canada had to back track on their vaccine mandates because of staff shortages and rely on testing
Australia is using Covid positive nurses
And two vaccines stop protecting you from mild Covid and that is all the mandate requires.
It seems unwise to me to continue this path.

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2022 10:40

I hope they backtrack too

The situation is always changeable and should be reassessed

AndAnotherNewOne · 11/01/2022 11:07

Fact checked - he doesn't come out well.

The BBC's fact-checking service has outlined the various errors and misunderstandings of Dr Steve James (who has apparently already apologised for the nonsense he spouted about "8 weeks"):

It would need a vote in parliament because it was parliament that decided on mandatory vaccination.
MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2022 11:18

Fine by me re another vote

Put forward new situation and assess

howdiditcometothis666 · 11/01/2022 11:19

@AndAnotherNewOne @Florianus The link to the studies provided by the BBC are with regards the Delta variant as far as I can see? I only had a quick look though

The anaesthetist was talking about the Delta variant when he said it's only reduced transmission for 8 weeks. He was incorrect.

I think that's highly unlikely to happen. Nearly 94% of NHS have had their first jab and more will be vaccinated in the next couple of months. Of the ones that haven't, some will have medical exemptions and/or be re deployed. Very few clinical staff will be dismissed

Whatever variant it was, the Dr has apparently apologised for getting it wrong.

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2022 12:09

Bella I hope you’re right

The Guardian article recently on numbers didn’t sound good.

If someone just gets first vaccine by then can they stay? Or is it two / or booster even

I don’t want valued people to lose their jobs and think the situation is so changeable that what we know now re omicron / boosters has updated since four or so months have passed.

If it is minimal I think the media will run with stories going by above

I think they extended it a bit for care home workers who had had their first jab but not the second so will probably do this for NHS workers. They only need two jabs at the moment .
BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/01/2022 12:16

Fully vaccinated for travel is just the two vaccinations for the most coutnries @Delatron

Delatron · 11/01/2022 12:23

But not all so it depends where you want to go. Plus at countries are putting an expiry date on vaccinations.

Austria say Vaccinations last 6 months! So my June vaccinations are out of date. Plus you need a booster. I really hope this doesn’t become a thing for other countries. I don’t want to keep having boosters. But it’s something to be aware of.

Delatron · 11/01/2022 12:23

The Dr apologised for his errors and also for the misunderstanding brought about by it.

However, anti vax will latch onto the original story and have done so repeatedly, shame they don't add the bits about his errors and the reasons he said it for him rather than for all.

Also we need to appreciate those latest figures are probably outdated now too. Given the wide spread of the current variant, It would support that the time between vaccination and the bodies ability to catch or spread it is now much reduced.

The BBC quote the lifespan of the vaccine as 12 weeks. I think the average man on the street would question the need to get a jab four times a year for an illness that causes little or no symptoms to the vast majority.
