A covid 19 infection can raise the risk of Type I & II Diabetes in Children

From the CDC. FB Link below to NYT Article.

This is what many professionals have been shouting from the rooftops for months now. While children do not die in large numbers, they can still be damaged long-term by these infections. There will no doubt be many more health problems showing up over the next few years at a population (Pediatric) wide level due to a previous covid infection in children.

It was absolute lunacy to let the virus rip through the 5 - 11 year olds in the UK. The JCVI will have a lot to answer for as they were responsible for holding up the vaccinations.

Just to resurrect this thread and say please be aware of the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes in children -Toilet, Thirsty, Tired, Thinner.

DS(12) has just been diagnosed out of the blue. Blood sugars were 39.1 and ketones were 2.9! We have no type 1 in either DH’s or mines families even down to aunts, cousins etc. He has 3 siblings without it and he’s the youngest.

The thirstiness I put down to us being in a hot country and not liking the food (on holiday abroad), toilet a side effect of the drinking, he didn’t show tiredness and went out for a 5 mile bike ride the day before I took him to A&E due to acetone breath, he definitely looked thinner which I put down to a growth spurt.

The nurses at the hospital told me that they have had a lot of new diagnoses of T1 in pediatrics. 4 in the previous weekend when they wouldn’t get that in a month before and they thought it was due to Covid.

Not trying to scaremonger but seriously, diabetes was never on my radar for worries for my DC. Utterly devastated for him having to have this in his life.

@scissorsandsellotape He actually told me he thought he had diabetes a few weeks before while on holiday as his pee was totally clear like water. I told him to stop drinking so much! I thought it was due to being in a very hot country and him filling up on juice and coke as he didn’t like the food out there.

He is very science orientated and Googles everything. I had drummed it into him to check the colour of his pee as it was a struggle to get him to drink and he used to get dehydrated when little.

It was the acetone (like nail polish remover) breath that finally clicked with me, too late as he was probably only days away from keto acidosis with blood sugars of 39 so thank god I told him to let me smell his breath!
