Vaccine inequity in operation. Novak Djokovic gets a medical exemption from being vaxxed for the Australian Open, while a 17-yr-old Indian player is denied entry because India has not begun vaccinating the under 18.

Now he's admitted the visa form was not correct he should go. No non celebrity would be waved through with an incorrect form.

The failing to isolate stuff is twatty, but not relevant to the visa.

Beekindbeehumble · 12/01/2022 12:48

Guess Australia might be concerned if he caught covid is Australia he might spread it, as would not wish to disappoint people - the reason he broke it in Dec?

I expect they would be concerned about that but I dont know whether that concern would be legal grounds to revoke a visa but incorrect paperwork no doubt is.

Note: I have to expertise in Australian immigration law. I may be speaking out of my arse.

idiotfacelicker · 12/01/2022 13:16
  • no expertise - dammit
Beekindbeehumble · 12/01/2022 13:32

I have no expertise either!

whynotwhatknot · 12/01/2022 14:40

Australia are concerned because they have pretty strict border/visa rules, ticking the wrong box as Novak has done can land you with a year in prison & then deported. For their rules to be so publicly flouted will be a massive issue. All of this alongside the facts that until fairly recently Australians couldn’t get back to their own country without quarantine & they have endured long & strict lockdowns to keep their covid deaths low. I have in laws & friends in Australia who are fuming about Novak being able to get away with being above the law
whynotwhatknot · 13/01/2022 22:39

Dont blame them nancy its disgusting i wont have any faith if hes allowed to stay

Eaglesqueak · 14/01/2022 07:00

Good. No one has covered themselves in glory, but I’m glad he’s going

milkyaqua · 14/01/2022 07:04

Visa now cancelled.

Itsnotover · 14/01/2022 08:45

I hope he has to leave now. The arrogance. You have got to be a rabid anti-vaxxer if you would decide to kick up all this fuss over just having a shot that presumably all the other players have had. Especially, considering he would have been defending his title. He seems to be intent on creating a big circus which takes away from the integrity of the sport.

nancy75 · 14/01/2022 09:44

It's been reported he plans to appeal. I wonder if the Aus government might do him a deal - if he goes now quietly he won't be banned from the country for 3 years & could possibly play next year

While I think the Aus government/border force and Tennis Australia have all fumbled this badly, in the end I agree with this. In the light of Renata Voráčová being deported under the same circumstances, it is tone deaf of Djokovic to draft in the lawyers and his mum and dad Hmm to try to make things different for him.
LumosSolem · 14/01/2022 10:12

His mum claiming he was 'tortured' is one of the most ridiculous and tone-deaf statements ever. The whole lot of them are batshit.

Whilst he is an excellent tennis player (although IMO cheats and often relies on intimidation tactics to beat his opponents), he has really proven to the world what lots of us have known for a long time- he falls well short of Federer, Nadal and Murray in terms of being a decent person.

Viviennemary · 14/01/2022 10:23

Good. I couldn't wait go see the arrogant pina get his comeuppance.

What's a 'Pina' ? 🧐

I don't see how he could possibly win on appeal.

He admitted that he put incorrect information on his forms

Just that will get him booted now.

ecceromani · 14/01/2022 13:26

What a circus!
No-one is looking good in this whole sorry saga now.

Australian Fed Gov should have made it very clear to Tennis Australia in advance that no unvaccinated players could enter the country to play in the tournament. No exemptions.

whynotwhatknot · 14/01/2022 13:35

Same judge let him out of detention im not hopeful

Sheabutterisdelish · 14/01/2022 13:41

It's unreal now, he must be losing fitness not to mention any sort of focus

Itsnotover · 14/01/2022 13:42

Of course he 'plans to appeal'. He's a dick head. I hope he loses all his sponsors for his despicable attitude.

Itsnotover · 14/01/2022 13:45

Surely the fact that he put incorrect information on his forms shows that he's not exempt in the real sense.

BambinaJAS · 14/01/2022 14:08

He has no choice now.

Because if this sticks, he cannot return to Australia for 3 years.

Thats going to hurt. Specially at his age.

But there were and are exemptions. He just doesn't seem to have qualified for one, given the information supplied.
