Vaccine inequity in operation. Novak Djokovic gets a medical exemption from being vaxxed for the Australian Open, while a 17-yr-old Indian player is denied entry because India has not begun vaccinating the under 18.

This is exactly what I thought would happen. He'll end up playing in the tournament because of who he is. If this was any ordinary person this certainly wouldn't be happening.

Tealightsandd · 10/01/2022 19:42

I feel sorry for the Russian player who was denied entry despite being vaccinated. Australia hasn't approved Sputnik (which is repeatedly similar efficacy to AZ and J&J) but that's not her fault.

EngTech · 10/01/2022 21:05

I plan to retrain as a tennis player but might have a bit of trouble being able to afford lawyers every time I try to see my family in Australia 👍

All donations gladly accepted 😹😹😹

milkyaqua · 10/01/2022 21:19

I feel sorry for the Czech tennis player Renata Voráčová who was deported and flew out of Australia, after her visa was reviewed because of this, despite having already being out and about playing tennis - because she was not an entitled type ready to call in Daddy and the lawyers to dispute her 'rights' to play with an invalid medical exemption, like Novaxx.

I am going to watch the Aussie Open this year just to hear the Booooooos when Novak comes out :)

I hope the TV channels don't mute them out!

He is an icon to anti vaxxers so I fear he would get plenty of cheers from that lot to cancel out any boos.

I think they are asking the crowd to show vaccine passports to enter so there shouldn't be too many anti vaxxers attending.
idiotfacelicker · 11/01/2022 19:03

Yes of course, that makes sense. Didn't think of that.

kittensinthekitchen · 11/01/2022 21:30

So does anyone have any idea of how long an Australian visa application typically takes?

@nancy75 Let's hope being vaccinated doesn't always equal not being pro-choice. Luckily, there is plenty of evidence of that here on MN, too.

Novak Djokovic find himself in Boris Johnson territory (not a great place to be rn).

I can’t believe Australia haven’t kicked him out.
Anyone else ticking the wrong box on the visa wouldn’t get away with sorry someone else did the form

Exactly!

When you think to all those being held in immigration centres, no-one cares if they're there because of an "error" on their application.
Who thinks he will use this experience to help them in some way?

Mollysocks · 12/01/2022 08:44

Bri’s Dad calling it an affront to the Serbian nation… 🤣 I mean, I can see where Novaxx gets his ego and delusions of grandeur from…

I have to think.... Him catching covid in 16th December was incredibly....... convenient, wasn't it? Especially since he didn't seem to bother observing any isolation after he tested postive.
Hmmmmmm.

musicalfrog · 12/01/2022 09:25

Well quite! @BruceAndNosh

Either way, he's either a liar, OR a liar and a scumbag who will happily go about infecting others when he has knowingly tested positive.

His reputation certainly will be further tainted after this.

It's interesting, he's probably going to end up with the most number of grand slams, but I can't imagine in 10/20 years time, particularly following his pandemic behaviour, there will be as much focus on him as Federer (who is the GOAT anyway) and Nadal (who is incredibly popular). Their 2008 Wimbledon final was probably the best match ever and both of them have so much class.

BruceAndNosh · 12/01/2022 09:43

If he plays, i suspect every time the ball is anywhere near the line, half the crowd will be yelling OUT!

whynotwhatknot · 12/01/2022 10:54

Hes apparently admitted to not isolating and he travelled to a different country before oz so hes just a scumbag really and shouldnt be allowed to play

some are calling for a ban from ATP now

Well who would want to play against him/be match umpire or line judges/ball boys/other staff for someone who doesn't give a shit about passing covid on?

I'm not someone who is paranoid about covid and I don't support any further restrictions- it seems likely that in the spring the requirement to isolate may well go. But as the rules currently stand, he has no respect for them whatsoever. I don't really care if people haven't followed all the rules (apart from things like Downing Street parties which are a disgrace) but people who knowingly have covid and who don't isolate are disgusting in my book.

Whether or not he lied about having covid in December, it's clear he would have no qualms about failing to isolate and why should any of the other players/court staff etc have to put up with that?

LumosSolem · 12/01/2022 11:13

What I meant to say as well was I think he should be banned from the ATP.

Beekindbeehumble · 12/01/2022 11:30

Quite a bad example for a top player to break isolation rules for covid on one occasion ( was it more than?), to not fill in the form correctly.
And if he is allowed to stay in Australia and compete what does that say for compliance of rules?

I agree. I’m not surprised though, everything he’s done and said just shows he’s a massive ego. He’s a misogynist, arrogant, the fact he is also selfish and a liar isn’t a surprise.
