I have seen a number of hospital trusts have declared this today. What does this actually mean and how does it affect us? Boris didn’t seem to be bothered by this should we be?

@reesewithoutaspoon

Most hospitals have volunteers. they show people where to go mainly.
Ours work on the wards, helping the patients . One I know was a retired nurse she was on trauma ward .

Why only use volunteers as meeters and greeters that seems wasteful of what can be a valuable resource

A Rocky few weeks???! 🤣 I think he means years doesn’t he? Because that’s how long it’s going to take to sort out the damage this Government has caused to the NHS.

Its bizarre how at the beginning of covid people were horrified that people might not get treated/video from italy of overcrowded corridors etc. It was part of The Fear at the beginning. And yet here it is now and where is the outrage at people not being treated/people waiting hours for an ambulance/people in pain/people not getting appropiate care.

It's actually frightening. Do most people just think it wont affect them (unlikely to need hospitL) or have private care anyway...

justasking111 · 08/01/2022 09:57

We're being nudged towards some type of two tier quasi private system have been for a number of years covid has sped it up. There was an attempted take over of the Spire this year by another health care company from Australia.

Quite, we are in a far worse position than Italy ever was now.

Been talking to friends in SW France, they have awful CV rates but local Hospitals are coping and few delays in getting treatment.

People blame the unvaccinated/the staff/bad management and not the tories/lack of funding because to do so would call into question their voting choices.

justasking111 · 08/01/2022 13:28

Friends die hard labour and plaid supporters are quietly having treatment privately, one friend both hips this year, it's lovely that she's out of pain now

MissyB1 · 08/01/2022 13:30

We don’t have health insurance but we’ve been starting to pay private for one off appointments. Scraping the money together now for ds to see a dermatologist. We shouldn’t have to and it makes me angry, but that’s where we are in this Country now, and I expect the Government are quite happy about that. Angry

So what? People who support better & cheaper public transport also often have a car....

The more who go private, means the sector will suck out staff from the NHS...meaning more will go private... i think thats the Conservative plan.
The NHS is a socialist concept and they have always disliked it, funding it just enough so they can deny this.

lljkk · 08/01/2022 14:21

I ran into someone yesterday who mentioned he's getting some surgery done privately -- I would have guessed he's on a modest income (disability), so was surprised.

Cumulative total deaths with covid in Italy & UK are pretty similar numbers (they have similar total populations, too)

justasking111 · 08/01/2022 14:22

@Alexandra2001 your consultant in your health board are doing NHS and private work just Google Spire and Bupa their details come up. Bank staff are flitting between NHS and private sector. Not sure what rock you've been under

I pay for my chiropractor. I can see a GP privately now never mind consultants. I'm in Wales the heart of NHS Drakeford isn't banning it

Yes but consider this. The harder it gets in the NHS and the more private work that becomes available, the more tempting it is for NHS staff to leave the NHS altogether. I know two surgeons and lots of nurses who have done this recently. They are not easy to replace!

justasking111 · 08/01/2022 15:41

Not arguing @MissyB1 you've provided further information that covid has accelerated the move to two tier health care, pay or wait and pray you survive long enough

Yeah, utterly depressing Sad
Silkieschickens · 08/01/2022 16:07

I have stage 3 breast cancer and for a while they thought it was at stage 4 with mets and incurable and even with that diagnosis I have had to go through complaints process to get surgery without extended delays and had to phone and cry down phone to get CTs done and get seen in first place. 4 months for GP to refer as they are so overloaded and all the delays means I will likely need chemo for 6 months and much poorer outcomes than if had been seen in June. I have tried raising this with hospital Chief Executive, very sympathetic and solved the one lot of delays which got things moved forward 2 months from what I was being told. Told someone in House of Lords, reply was could not be possible as my hospital had a good reputation Hmm, it is nothing to do with quality of care just delays, lack of funding (far below other European countries as % of gdp for years and consequently poorer cancer outcomes), lack of staff as so many are off with covid / covid isolation / burned out from 13 hour days but the government do not care, it saves money and people vote for them as they don't want to pay more tax and think it won't affect them. Or think it can be solved for free or that people with cancer can just wait, was told that a few times on here or certain sections of undeserving public can be left untreated according to some people, generally old people or fat people or the unvaccinated, just any category they are not in. I messaged 3 other MPs, 2 out of 3 said could not help, 1 said e-mail Dept of Health - I tried the recommended link and it just says failed all the time, presumably volume of complaints overloading it but will be recorded as everyone is happy as system does not allow complaints to go through. Another one did reply and said yes there is a huge issue with cancer atm esp at diagnosis stage but unfortunately he is in no position of power atm. I have tried my MP as well but don't think she has used anything state since birth though it is apparently hitting the private sector here now as well and once they discover that maybe things will change.

Dentist as well cannot get any state ones around here or even get added to a list, well got told you are the 800th person to be added to our list of one an hour away rated 1 out of 5 and never heard again. And saw some UK dentists website saying please make appointment still as oral cancer rates are now increasing and one poor lady who had to remove 11 teeth by herself as no NHS dentist would see her.

The trouble is people like me won't show up on stats - I will now probably die much earlier than I should have done maybe in 5 years rather than the 40 odd years I should have left but because there is only 5% chance in the next year no-one who does not know me will notice but the impact on my 2 kids who will be left struggling without any help esp the SN one will be really awful.

MissyB1 · 08/01/2022 16:17

Oh @Silkieschickens I’m so sorry this is happening to you Flowers
You’re right unfortunately, lots of people don’t have a clue about how bloody serious this, or they don’t give a toss! Until they are the ones desperately trying to get a diagnosis or treatment of course! Meantime they will witter on about people going to A&E with a sore toe blocking up the hospitals blah blah 🙄
All bollocks of course but it suits theirs and the Government’s agendas.

Curiousmouse · 08/01/2022 17:18

@Silkieschickens

Big hugs. That is such an awful position to be in.

This. Anyone who thinks there's going to be any discussion about a European style health insurance system is deluded. We're more than half way to the USA system by stealth.
justasking111 · 09/01/2022 12:26

@WiseUpJanetWeiss we're a fruit ripe for plundering health wise. Friends work at the Spire their waiting lists have quadrupled time wise.

Rather like education academies I suspect the NHS will hand over some hospitals or some departments buildings

MissyB1 · 09/01/2022 15:19

Wasn't there a large number of GP practices sold to an American insurance company last year as well?

What difference does it make though? GPSs are a business contracted by the NHS.
justasking111 · 09/01/2022 20:23

Friends in Ireland pay the GP €60 a visit. I can see this coming about
