Whilst I'd love to say all is quiet on New Years Day the reality is:

Welcome to yet another DATA thread.

Our preference is - still - for factual, data driven and analytical contributions.

Please try to keep discussion focused on these.
From a brilliant thread by John Burn Murdoch re current state of play, which is worth reading in its entirety:

twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1478339769646166019?s=21
So who is it they want to reduce isolation to 5 days with testing? I thought Tim Spector was referring to positive but asymptomatic cases but here is says close contacts.

I thought the 5 or 7 day difference internationally was down to which day is considered day 1. So in some places it starts from the day of the positive test in others it's the first day of symptoms so either way pretty much the same time is spent isolating when infectious however you count it.

Ohsofedupwiththis · 04/01/2022 13:12

It appears we have a press conference at 5!

What a great data thread re J BM

JanglyBeads · 04/01/2022 13:18

Yes @containsnuts I thought that too.

I'm confused by all I've seen about it because there's whether it's

• proposed or already introduced
• For positive cases or just close contacts;
• 5 or 7 days
• With daily testing or just at the end
HCPs or everyone
• UK or other countries!

@Ohsofedupwiththis

I can't see anything online about this ?
the80sweregreat · 04/01/2022 13:29

Just saw about the presser on line !
Sorry , it is at 5.
Seems to be an up date

the80sweregreat · 04/01/2022 13:38

According to the DM they want the isolation period to be cut down to five days.

Quarantino · 04/01/2022 13:41

Ta for the JBM thread. Ties in a bit with this one from a US doctor
twitter.com/Craig_A_Spencer/status/1478217081959108614?t=0PfN798H9Xr3Xi9OQWA4sQ&s=19

Essentially fewer ppl being ventilated because it now doesn't attack in the same way (I'm paraphrasing) but badly exacerbating underlying conditions like diabetes is a real concern.

Backs up what I've read in recent discussions re the difficulty of differentiating between "with covid" and "of covid".

MarshaBradyo · 04/01/2022 13:41

80s do you mean this is what will be announced?

Or someone else wants it

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 04/01/2022 13:48

@Ohsofedupwiththis

It appears we have a press conference at 5!
With Sir Patrick Vallance and Prof Sir Chris Whitty.

also, from the BBC...
No 10 refuses to rule out rationing tests
Earlier, we brought you the latest from Downing Street on Covid tests - with the prime minister's spokesman refusing to rule out rationing tests.

The government has drawn up a contingency plan to prioritise vulnerable people and some key workers in case there's a shortage of Covid tests - after reports of patchy supplies of lateral flow kits in recent weeks.

Asked whether the government was preparing to ration tests, the spokesman said: "We have one of the highest testing capacities in the world, certainly the highest in Europe. We would obviously need to keep under review, as prevalence is incredibly high, what the right approach might be and we continue to take advice on whether that is necessary."

Shock
Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2022 13:49

I hope we aren't following the USA for the sake of public pressure on the 5 days. Their isolation periods begin form a different moment from ours. Effectively, their '5th day' comes after ours in a lot of cases.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 04/01/2022 13:50

And, I've just seen this on BBC

Israel reports first case of flurona

containsnuts · 04/01/2022 13:51

The challenge is how to do both simultaneously - reduce isolation and ration tests.

the80sweregreat · 04/01/2022 13:56

MPs want it to be decreased ; those very scientific MPs who know all about the science behind isolation times and infection controls.
(The comments page on the DM want testing to be stopped completely and the ' cold ' to go away of course )

containsnuts · 04/01/2022 14:08

I'm all for it if they can prove it will work. Otherwise it seems very disruptive to isolate half the population for 5 days for them to go out on day 6 and spread it anyway. How does that help schools and workplaces?

You’d have to look at when people are most infectious

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 04/01/2022 14:33

If Royal Mail moan about not enough staff...

I have today received a vital piece of correspondence.

A dominos pizza leaflet.

No mail...and it was our RM postie in uniform/hi viz, not just a random leaflet drop.🤷‍♀️

EducatingArti · 04/01/2022 14:54

I don't understand the 5 day thing. NHS staff who have been close contacts can go into work as soon as they get a negative PCR which is usually under 5 days anyway!

Chersfrozenface · 04/01/2022 14:59

I'm almost certain that Royal Mail, as a universal carrier, cannot reject or set aside items of mail. You'd have to complain to Domino's.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 04/01/2022 15:04

Not sure a leaflet counts as "Mail" as it's not addressed to anyone...anyway, it's in the bin and I dutifully washed my hands (and sang a song) afterwards. Smile
Bordois · 04/01/2022 16:06

218k reported today with the caveat that it covers various time periods for different nations.

48 deaths reported- cant help thinking we are due a big catch up on those figures soon

RachC2021 · 04/01/2022 16:10

But look at Dec 29th for specimens by date (instead of by reported).

That’s at 226k.

Adogisonmypillow · 04/01/2022 16:23

I have no idea anymore if these numbers and good/bad/ indifferent. The huge numbers seem like a concern but there is so much opposition to more restrictions i dont see what they can really do? Should i be concerned or not! Thats all i want to know at this point.

Im not expexting any actual answers from boris on this ‘
