How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

In response to the pandemic, the German federal government is supporting the purchase of such devices as a way of keeping schools and kindergartens open for in-person instruction as far as possible.

@noblegiraffe

And what sort of plan do you want?

Well, I'd like to know how many extra supply teachers have signed up following the emergency call-out, for example, and what the back-up plan is to keep schools open in the event of a severe staff shortage.

I'd like an update to the DfE school guidelines in the light of omicron's much increased transmissibility.

I'd like to know the plan for the roll-out of the second vaccine in schools.

I'd like to know what will happen to exams if (when) there is significant further disruption to education.

Because, you know, the government has a habit of landing all sorts of shit on schools at the very last minute and that is unacceptable.

This. This. A thousand times this. Thanks @noblegiraffe for voicing some sense. From a teacher (and her teacher husband). People not in schools haven’t got a clue at how mad the end of last term was and how mad this term has the potential to be.

Oh, and cover teachers? I’m in London and have a friend who works for a teaching supply agency. For just over a week at the end of the last term there was not one primary or secondary cover teacher available in all of north east London or the surrounding areas of Essex. They all either had Covid or didn’t want the work in case they caught it. Loads of schools had to collapse yeargroups/do online learning for some years (including mine).

As for the exams, both I and my husband mark for AQA and they’re being pretty honest in telling us currently that they don’t have a clue what will happen if there’s further disruption. The government tell them when they tell the rest of us.

@Shallwegoforawalk No need to make this about me, I'm not the only one who thinks things could be concerning - the government latest is here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59823652

Covid is shit, we're all living through it, these boards hold a range of views. If that starts to get to you, maybe take some time away from it Brew

mellongoose · 30/12/2021 07:33

Why do schools have to be spoon fed plans by Government? There will obviously be guidance if schools have to close, or if Omicron suddenly becomes more dangerous. But what we are now talking about is managing staff absences. All businesses and settings need to make such plans. Im not saying it's easy, but none of this is. I would like to see children put first, learning second and, yes I'll say it, the needs of grown adults third.

As PP said, most staff will have had it on the run up to Christmas (or so we were being told) or over the holidays and some will get it inext term.

I refer back to my previous post, I still believe it is better to have children in schools. Especially vulnerable children.

As I also said, these are my opinions and people are welcome to disagree. I do know how schools work, but I also have experience in other settings.

Don't forget, it was NEU who was insisting that teachers were vaccinated before the old and vulnerable in society. I thought this was a terrible thing to call for. Now everyone is vaccinated. We are in a much better place than we were a year ago.

Hercisback · 30/12/2021 07:36

The NEU never called for teachers vein vaccinated before the old and vulnerable.

If you want to put children learning first, then you'd support teachers in calls for country wide mitigations.

The level of staff absence due to covid is unprecedented. Supply teachers are like hens teeth. What do you suggest schools do?

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 07:38

@mellongoose

Education is a government responsibility. The government should therefore take responsibility.

Stop blaming teachers for government failures.

mellongoose · 30/12/2021 07:46

I'm not blaming teachers (see posts above) I'm blaming the NEU. They put the interests of their members first.....before children and the most vulnerable in society.

Yes, Gov is responsible for ensuring education is delivered and schools are given budgets to manage this. Depending on infection rates next week, I expect more guidance will be given. There is nothing to stop schools planning in the meantime. Most that I know already are.

mellongoose · 30/12/2021 07:47

The NEU never called for teachers vein vaccinated before the old and vulnerable.

They absolutely did. Stop trying to change history 🙄

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 07:49

Ah the old "unions out their members interests first".

It's always bollocks.

The government should be looking after the most vulnerable in society but it took a footballer to make sure they were fed.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 07:50

@mellongoose

Link?

Otherwise never happened

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 07:51

@mellongoose

Your links don't back your claim.

Stop talking shit.

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 07:52

The NEU are teachers.

Most of what they asked for was really sensible to my eyes as a parent.

What's your issue with wanting ventilation etc? Pretty blinkered to let your political views on unions stop you supporting in school improvements.

Plus school budgets have not been supported by the government, so the extra costs of dealing with covid have impacted learning. Maybe that's good enough for your kids, but it's not good enough for mine.

mellongoose · 30/12/2021 07:53

Sheesh. Again not true. It took a footballer to ensure some children were offered a meal in the school holidays for the first time.

The government's holiday activities program was a much better policy than what the footballer put forward and thankfully is still being used successfully by thousands of children.

But you're off topic.

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 07:56

The government has done virtually nothing. Poverty is worse year on year anyway and covid supercharged it.

No one except die hard Tories would claim the government has done anything near enough on schools or child poverty.

Rashford had to intervene repeatedly. The government had to cave.

It has been disgusting to watch as a parent.

Hercisback · 30/12/2021 07:58

@mellongoose Those links don't say anything about teachers being before the vulnerable and elderly. Phase 2 was after the vulnerable and elderly.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 07:58

Not off topic.

Exactly in it.

The footballer made sure the government took care of the most vulnerable children. Their own programs were shite.

Hercisback · 30/12/2021 08:00

The government's holiday activities program was a much better policy

Was this the summer schools? Poorly attended and crap money was their reputation locally.

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 08:00

@mellongoose

Why have you lied.about the teaching unions? Basically we can discount your opinions from now on, cause their based on alternative facts.

mellongoose · 30/12/2021 08:09

Since your only argument is to
a) derail OP's thread and
b) cancel me

I'm out.

Kennykenkencat · 30/12/2021 08:10

@noblegiraffe

I have worked very closely with people having daily Covid tests

That seems like a luxury many people don’t have…

It has only been in the last couple of weeks that there has been a supply issue. Possibly because people panicked ordered because there was talk of them not being free n the new year.
JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 08:11

@mellongoose

No you are out cause you got caught in a lie.

rrhuth · 30/12/2021 08:12

Grin at 'cancel me'
You can stay and talk it through all you like!

JohnHuffam1812 · 30/12/2021 08:14

Ahh canceling. Still not been given good examples of someone who has been cancelled. Seems to be invoked when people don't want to engage with critique of what they have said.

And you don't want to engage because you were lying, and proved it yourself! Fantastic that you owned yourself in such a way.

Pretending to be for the vulnerable by the way, very low.
