Modelling released Christmas Eve on return to Step 2

bathsh3ba · 25/12/2021 08:17

I've been really rattled by the release of new modelling on Christmas Eve of all days about the option of moving to 50% or 100% of Step 2 from either 28 Dec or 1 Jan for 2 weeks, 6 weeks or 3 months in England.

They acknowledge there are still a lot of unknowns but of course their data shows the longer and harder you lock down the fewer hospitalisations and deaths (even I could tell you that). But they don't consider the impact of it on wellbeing or anxiety which ONS data already shows is rocketing again.

As a reminder Step 2 means no household mixing inside. This is my key bugbear. I wouldn't even mind rule of 6 indoors as long as I could see a non-bubble friend or family member in my home.

I keep trying to tell myself it's a tactic to encourage boosters and that if Scotland, Wales and NI haven't gone as far as no indoor mixing, England won't. But I can't shake the feeling of dread now.

So saying you won't be told who you can have in your own home makes you an anti vaxxer @visitingagain? Rubbish!

Agree. Appalling post.

Ridiculous isn't it. I'm double vaxxed, booster booked for the 27th. Happily wear a mask, I don't judge those who don't. Have kept my kids off school at the first hint of symptoms and tested before sending them back. Have tried to be balanced and sensible with things.

I don't agree with any further restrictions on how things currently stand in England today and if pubs close, then I'll be seeing friends in our homes.
@Angrymum22 I can’t imagine any frontline worker saying that right now.
I work for the nhs there is plenty that didn’t comply through other lockdowns. Healthcare workers are human too not robots.

But reading on so it’s ok for us to go into work with covid? Would you want a covid positive worker looking after a sick vulnerable parent or neonate? No way would I put a vulnerable person at risk.

Or go back to work after an infection sooner. That can feck right off. I’ve managed to not get covid all this time. I’ve took no isolation time either. If I catch it I will make sure I’m better before I’m back in work. I won’t be rushing just because the government have wrecked the NHS and now are paying the price. I’m knackered and done.

@puppeteer

with so many NHS workers sick.

And so many more not sick, but forced to isolate anyway.

We don’t isolate now for even household contacts in my trust. Pcr then lft each day. Only time we are off now if we are sick.
refraction · 25/12/2021 14:38

Hopefully bozo will at least make it a proper lockdown this time along the lines of Spain where only key workers were allowed out.

This would never happen here.

VikingOnTheFridge · 25/12/2021 14:40

No one was imprisoned in flats in Spain! DC had to stay indoors for a few months to keep themselves and others safe from a deadly virus.

Frankly if we’d had a proper lockdown like that here, covid would no longer have been an issue.

Instead we pandered to the covid deniers and had people out multiple times a day for walks and in and out of the supermarket for chocolate and Prosecco.

Anyway it looks like another lockdown will be here sooner rather than later if my street is anything to go by. At least 30 people over for dinner at one house; 20 at another. No masks or social distancing.

If that's satire, it was incredibly adept.

StoodOnAPlug · 25/12/2021 14:41

@YuletideLog

Presumably Covid is no longer an issue in Spain then?

Spain’s initial lockdown has been ruled unlawful by its own courts.

I was under the impression that you still had to stay away if any test is positive and that basically the positive test consequences were same for NHS employees as for anyone else. Is it not right?

I can't be sure if this is a joke or not.

cleocleo81 · 25/12/2021 15:01

I won't be following that. Why should I when the government can't follow it themselves. My only worry would be being reported.

I mean for contacts. Although people are talking that if us nhs staff aren’t symptomatic we should be in work which is ridiculous
PilatesPeach · 25/12/2021 15:37

Plenty of people cannot work at all in step 2 so if it is introduced, I hope the government will put its hand in its pocket.

puppeteer · 25/12/2021 15:39

Is it? Why?

ilovesooty · 25/12/2021 15:56

@visitingagain

There are a huge amount of anti vaxxers on here, not really surprising to see how many "won't comply". But if like most people you can see that the alternative is that power supplies, trains, petrol etc become affected of course you will.
Mumsnet is crawling with them seemingly.
treeflowercat · 25/12/2021 17:03

@Flapjacker48

Gov can say it but people just won't comply with no household mixing
If MN is anything to go by, compliance will be pretty decent. For every poster who says they won't comply, there's at least another who will keep to the letter of any rules, some of them to the point of absurdity.
Kennykenkencat · 25/12/2021 17:32

What exactly does “had to stay indoors for a few months” mean if not imprisonment.

Why the need for a harsh lockdown? This latest variant looks like it is very transmissible with much milder symptoms for the vast majority of people

We have the opportunity to spread this variant around and get most of us immune. Let us not waste the opportunity.

Lazypuppy · 25/12/2021 17:34

They definitely wouldn't get previous levels of compliance

Not everyone is on mumsnet and most were out and about during the last lockdown.

IcedPurple · 25/12/2021 17:43

I can't be sure if this is a joke or not.

Let's just say that this particular poster has 'form'.

The bit about 'popping out for chocolate' gave it away.

Let's not rise to the bait.

LittleBabyCheeses · 25/12/2021 17:58

Can you imagine how big your house would have to be to social distance with 30 people over Christmas dinner?

LittleBabyCheeses · 25/12/2021 17:59

And of course you can’t eat Christmas dinner in a mask Grin. You’d get gravy all over it.
