Modelling released Christmas Eve on return to Step 2

I've been really rattled by the release of new modelling on Christmas Eve of all days about the option of moving to 50% or 100% of Step 2 from either 28 Dec or 1 Jan for 2 weeks, 6 weeks or 3 months in England.

They acknowledge there are still a lot of unknowns but of course their data shows the longer and harder you lock down the fewer hospitalisations and deaths (even I could tell you that). But they don't consider the impact of it on wellbeing or anxiety which ONS data already shows is rocketing again.

As a reminder Step 2 means no household mixing inside. This is my key bugbear. I wouldn't even mind rule of 6 indoors as long as I could see a non-bubble friend or family member in my home.

I keep trying to tell myself it's a tactic to encourage boosters and that if Scotland, Wales and NI haven't gone as far as no indoor mixing, England won't. But I can't shake the feeling of dread now.

@TheKeatingFive

Not sure anything would trigger that at the moment.

I think that's naive.

And I think that most politicians who want to be the next PM will wait until public opinion swings and they can be more assured if a warm reception, not more if the same blame and hate that Boris is served daily.

Not naive, just very aware that we no longer have grass roots politicians, just career politicians. And they know the cost of every action down to the last vote in any opinion poll

Jaxhog · 25/12/2021 12:33

Like it or not, it is still a very unpredictable pandemic. No one really wants restrictions, but deaths are very permanent and more likely with so many NHS workers sick.

Of course, if everyone was vaxxed, the figures wouldn't be so high.

I disagree. There will always be some that grab any chance they get. They don't come up that frequently.

Definitely, especially as none of the likely candidates are obvious PM in waiting types. They're all people who'd need to take the chance that circumstances present them with.

I am a frontline hcp and I agree with @Angrymum22

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/12/2021 12:55

the modelling was released before the latest data suggesting the Omicron variant may produce less severe illness than the Delta strain.

Well I refuse to be dictated to by a bunch of mathematical modellers. Not a chance I shall be paying the slightest attention to any new restrictions on who I can and can’t socialise with. Absolutely sucks about the pubs etc though. Who wants to have food and a pint outdoors between December and March ffs??!

Flowersandjellybeans · 25/12/2021 13:08

I’d say 80% of our friendship group have had it now, fairly recently, and they have all taken sensible precautions for visiting parents/elderly family for example this Christmas we haven’t met up for the past week or so, LFTs etc.

I won’t be complying with any rules about who I can and can’t have in my house, especially for THREE MONTHS, it’s insane.

puppeteer · 25/12/2021 13:28

with so many NHS workers sick.

And so many more not sick, but forced to isolate anyway.

LumosSolem · 25/12/2021 13:28

I agree with @Angrymum22 massively.

Wizzbangfizz · 25/12/2021 13:31

@Stinkywizzleteets but what do you want? I'd be interested to know, pretty much everyone is vaxxed and boosted - when do we live normally?

And the majority of people I know across vast swathes of society feel like those on here who won't be complying and want to live life as normally as possible. It is only on here the hysteria reaches crazy levels.

MaxNormal · 25/12/2021 13:36

@Stinkywizzleteets telling a frightened cancer sufferer to get in the bin is a new low.

visitingagain · 25/12/2021 13:40

There are a huge amount of anti vaxxers on here, not really surprising to see how many "won't comply".
But if like most people you can see that the alternative is that power supplies, trains, petrol etc become affected of course you will.

RampantIvy · 25/12/2021 13:40

I guess it is the lesser of the two evils though. Even more hospital admissions with even more staff shortages vs worse mental health for a number of people.

Blame the anti vaxxers.

Wizzbangfizz · 25/12/2021 13:43

Anti vaxxers on this thread or on mumsnet?

Ive been triple jabbed, have had covid once and have confirmed antibodies fwiw.

Doris86 · 25/12/2021 13:45

@MrsLargeEmbodied

but it is more transmittable, so worrying.
But also milder. Something the media always seem to downplay, and keep pushing the scare tactics.

I agree with this- I thought
@Stinkywizzleteets
post was absolutely disgusting, to someone who has been going to through cancer and who described the desperate situation her friend is in. Absolutely vile. The suggestion that people are happy to kill off the elderly/vulnerable is really awful too- and frankly tired now.

Triple jabbed, twice infected (once pre vaccines, once post booster). As I said, I will never again be told who can come into my house.
Snailhaterz2 · 25/12/2021 13:51

I find it depressing that in the UK the suggested approach when restrictions are considered is always a complete ban on household mixing. Other countries in Europe, often held up on here as a good example of what should be done, generally seem to allow a limited amount of household mixing. For example, the Netherlands' recent lockdown and Germany's additional measures both still allow a small amount of indoor mixing. I feel there'd be more buy in if there was more recognition of how important it is for people to have a small amount of social contact, rather than lurching straight to complete draconian bans. Exactly @CornishYarg - I seem to remember that France didn't get involved in what happened in the home either, as it would be against people's human rights. As a single person, who wfh, I don't think I can cope with another couple of months, at the darkest time of the year, with very limited human contact.

LittleBabyCheeses · 25/12/2021 13:53

Yes, my family live in Spain and bar their extreme lockdown at the start they’ve never been prevented from mixing households.

Whichjab · 25/12/2021 14:05

They imprisoned children in flats for months you can't gloss over that
LittleBabyCheeses · 25/12/2021 14:06

Not glossing over anything Hmm, that was fucking appalling and I have been very loud in my condemnation of it. My niece suffered massively from it.
I was specifically talking about household mixing though.

Mickarooni · 25/12/2021 14:08

The sneakiness of this bothers me. I’ve been complaint and I am CEV (immune deficiency and chronic lung disease) so there’s risk to me but I’m seriously fed up of being told who I can have in my own home while while those in government are having bloody parties.

Not an anti vaxxer, I've had the vaccines. But I will not be told that I can't have my loved ones in my home.
