Cinemas not following the rules

If you are cautious about covid I would advise against Vue cinemas at the moment.

We went at an early showing and booked extra seats to keep some distance. It was awful. No signs up about masks required and I would estimate 75% didn't bother. A few clearly had flu/covid and were coughing and spluttering everywhere. Staff weren't interested in the slightest. Some teenagers were making a point of coughing as they thought it was hilarious. A few including us walked out because of how bad it was.

It's no wonder we are in this mess. To be honest I hope they shut them again.

You said imagining wishing people out of jobs.

That is a misquote. I never said anything of the sort. I resent the accusation.[/quote]
What do you think will happen if your wish for businesses to close comes true?

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 20:22

people don't respond to covid requests well. How would an employer protect staff? police don't intervene if people are not wearing masks or are misbehaving. Employers are not empowered to deal with it, theres no support...

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:23

@NannaMcPhoo It was intended to be a pre Christmas treat for a group of children with additional needs who have suffered a great deal during the pandemic. It was booked for a very early showing on a week day in a cinema which generally isn't busy. And only after the mask guidelines were reintroduced.

There has to be a balance somewhere. It's not unreasonable to expect guidelines are followed Disabled children shouldn't have to stay at home for the rest of their lives.

The cinema could have mask posters for wallpaper... it still does not take away from the fact that you don't have to wear a mask when eating/drinking.... which most people watching a film will be.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 16/12/2021 20:29

'There has to be a balance somewhere. It's not unreasonable to expect guidelines are followed*

But nothing you've said shows they didn't flow the guidelines. If they were eating they didn't need a mask and there's no rules saying people with cough cannot go outside.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/12/2021 20:31

Honestly, if you’re cautious (we are) what an earth are you thinking in the first place, going to a cinema?

Seriously?

Which guidelines weren't followed?

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:33

I said I hoped, not wished.

I can't see into the future so have no idea what Rishi is planning to do this time.

Also, I quite agree that disabled children shouldn't have to stay in for the rest of their lives. But I'm not sure an unventilated cinema at the start of a wave of a mega infectious new variant is the best way for them to re-start their social lives.

shouldistop · 16/12/2021 20:38

How can it be clear someone has flu / Covid?
If it was clear when someone has Covid we wouldn't be spending millions on testing.
I doubt anyone with the flu would be at the cinema.

OliveTree75 · 16/12/2021 20:39

So you went to an early morning weekday viewing yet it was full of teenagers, coughing and unmasked people? As well as other enraged people who left. Yeah,OK

Hope / wish not much difference really.

Both result in a loss of livelihoods.

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:44

@TheVampiresWife

Most people weren't following the mask mandate. About 3/4 weren't in either the foyer/walking into the auditorium past people to get to their seats or seated ( not talking about whilst eating ).

This hasnt been my experience in shops etc. up to now so I was surprised at how different the approach was at the cinema.

OP posts:
paranoidnamechanger · 16/12/2021 20:46

I think maybe stay at home for a while from now on to watch films.

Some people aren't following the rules on buses and shops so why do you expect people in cinemas to be different?

www.myvue.com/news-competitions/stay-safe

What else do you want them to do?
If you don't feel safe, even with all those measures, then stay home.

CathyorClaire · 16/12/2021 20:52

Oh and there's the dripfeed...

I don't go to the cinema because the constant wrapper rattling, noisy gnawing of wrapper contents and yapping over the film annoy me too much. Bit of snorking not so much.

If I was worried about pandemic cooties, especially for the vulnerable, cinema wouldn't be my first port of call.

XenoBitch · 16/12/2021 20:55

@TheVampiresWife

Oops, didn't mean to quote you. That was meant for OP

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:55

Anyway, the point of my post was simply to convey the reality of our experience. If I had known how bad it was we simply wouldn't have gone. We won't again and it's a shame. Perhaps some other parents/carers found it useful to know.

I get quite emotional knowing how much kids like these have missed out on when they aren't playing on a level field to begin with. It's always an uphill battle.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 20:55

op ... nobody can enforce mask wearing...nobody

MarcelineMissouri · 16/12/2021 20:55

I would just like to respond to the posts that have commented on cinema ventilation - if it’s a modern build then chances are it will in fact be extremely well ventilated as the majority use roof top units which mean there is a constant cycle of fresh air coming through, rather than recirculating the same air which is more of a problem.

I completely understand why it’s an activity that people may not feel comfortable with at the moment but they are in fact usually very well ventilated buildings!

SpeckledHem · 16/12/2021 20:58

Why are people saying that op wants people to lose their jobs?
I too would be annoyed by this lack of following simple rules to keep people safe. Why shouldn’t op be able to enjoy going to the cinema like everyone else? Just because clearly most posters on this thread don’t care about others, doesn’t mean op should stay at home!

How rude! People are so unkind

rwalker · 16/12/2021 21:02

Most of the poster have very obviously worked with the general public in a setting like this .

Loads would claim to be exempt, be aggressive and threatening .I for one on min wage would not be challenging them .

SpeckledHem · 16/12/2021 21:09

Vue cinema is rubbish anyway, cineworld much better

Eurgh I would hate to have to work with the general public
Noisyprat · 16/12/2021 21:15

It's a shame you were disappointed OP however frankly there are so many who are 'exempt' that this was always going to be the case this time round. You have no idea if those people were exempt or not so you can't comment.

We are reaching the point when those that are older or vulnerable are going to have to isolate I'm afraid, the country needs to keep going otherwise it will fall apart.
