Cinemas not following the rules

If you are cautious about covid I would advise against Vue cinemas at the moment.

We went at an early showing and booked extra seats to keep some distance. It was awful. No signs up about masks required and I would estimate 75% didn't bother. A few clearly had flu/covid and were coughing and spluttering everywhere. Staff weren't interested in the slightest. Some teenagers were making a point of coughing as they thought it was hilarious. A few including us walked out because of how bad it was.

It's no wonder we are in this mess. To be honest I hope they shut them again.

What rules were being broken? You can remove masks to eat/drink.

I went to the cinema recently and would have felt a prize twat for booking empty seats around me. There was a grand total of 8 people watching the film!

girlbaby85 · 16/12/2021 19:44

You realise that you don't have to wear a mask in the cinema if you are eating and drinking? So most people sit down and take them off for the movie as they will be snacking. I am going on Saturday and I am not wearing a mask once I sit down.

I was literally going to comment this! I went to the cinema recently and there was nothing to say you should be wearing masks once seated. Most people have food/drinks with them so why should they be wearing masks? It doesn't make much sense

A constant very loud cough and doing that awful nasal/back of his throat phlegm clearing thing . He was sweating profusely too. It wasnt a sniffle. Even if this was pre covid I'd still think bloody selfish for the noise if nothing else.[/quote]
My child coughs like that every day and can look sweaty he doesn't have covid, flu, or a cold but an illness that is not contagious.

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 19:47

I dont want everyone to miss out but I do think its reasonable for people to follow the advice and mask up. I also don't think its acceptable to attend if you are making so much noise it spoils the enjoyment of others.

For those who asked the member of staff said there was nothing she could do and simply shrugged her shoulders - but she didn't even attempt to address it in any way.

It's going to be a very long pandemic for you..

OP as others have pointed out they don't need to wear masks. So they're following the advice, as once you sit down you can remove the mask to allow for eating / drinking.

@SquirtleSquad

It's going to be a very long pandemic for you..
Thank you, this gave me a much needed laugh this evening Grin

As does this whole nonsensical thread, to be honest.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 16/12/2021 19:50

A friend just asked me if I wanted to go to West Side Story with her, as much as I'd like see ut & have cinema popcorn, that's going to be a hard 'no thanks'

TheVampiresWife · 16/12/2021 19:51

@Willyoujustbequiet which rules were the cinema not following?

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 19:53

you want a member of staff to confront people breaking rules? are you serious??

they are not paid enough, or trained, to put themselves into situations that could escalate

housemdwaswrong · 16/12/2021 19:54

I can imagine the irritation tbh. But, and it's a big but, if there were members of your group that were vulnerable in any way, then taking them to a cinema is a risk the parents should have thought through.

I am desperately missing shows and pubs atm, but for me, the risk just isn't worth it. An unventilated room for his is a definite no go. It's annoying, but my life has changed for now too manage my risk. I have to take a risk in work, but I don't have to go shopping, to theatres or cinemas or to pubs. Booking extra seats would never be enough limiting the risk enough for me. Each to their own, but I don't see the point in putting yourself in foreseeable stressful scenarios.

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 19:54

It wasn't children coughing.

@Squirtlesquad yes, it already has been with shielding. That's partially why we wanted the kids to have a Christmas treat.

Excuse awful phone errors which reduce my grammar to that of a 10 year old.

I quoted directly from your OP

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:03

@xxxGirlCrushxxx

Pre pandemic I've seen staff approach people and ask them to be quiet or whatever. I've also seen people be asked to leave so I'm not sure why politely advising people of xyz is such a stretch.

Shops/restaurants all have signs up etc.. If other places manage it I don't see why cinemas can't.

OP posts:
DockOTheBay · 16/12/2021 20:04

Sorry I'm sure this was annoying but it is not the fault of the cinema. They can request that people wear masks and don't attend with the symptoms, but they can't enforce it if people don't follow this rules. The staff member is right, what can they do?

I think you've made yourself sound a bit silly when you did they all clearly had flu or covid. I've had a cough this week, it sounded awful but it wasn't flu or covid.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 16/12/2021 20:05

What rules were these people not following though, none of what you have said breaks any rules?

Also I'm so pleased I gave you a laugh. If you'd ever had flu or knew someone who had, had it you'd know there was no chance these people sitting in a cinema staring at a huge screen had the bloody flu. I don't need to be there to know that.

OnceUponAWhine · 16/12/2021 20:05

The irony is, some folk cough more from wearing a mask🤷‍♀️

Can you imagine what it was like for the non smokers back in the good old days when folk could smoke in a cinema.

staff are regularly being abused/assaulted with covid related requests....its a sore subject. same with shops/restaurants....mention covid rules and people are extra baggy...why should a cinema staff member have to deal with that?

not surprised they shrugged it off

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:11

@MajorCarolDanvers

You said imagining wishing people out of jobs.

That is a misquote. I never said anything of the sort. I resent the accusation.

OP posts:
NannaMcPhoo · 16/12/2021 20:16

Why did you go to the cinema?

I am not especially concerned about covid but I would still not dream of going to the cinema. It is a prime place to share the 'vid

lololololollll · 16/12/2021 20:16

Say misquote again

Willyoujustbequiet · 16/12/2021 20:17

@xxxGirlCrushxxx

I think their employer should do more and no one should have to be exposed to abuse at their place of work. I cant see how its so difficult to put a few posters up though. If they can have a trailer advert reminding people about turning off mobiles etc..then that would seem an easy way of giving a polite reminder of the current guidelines.

OP posts:
luverlybubberly · 16/12/2021 20:17

If you are that vulnerable, the cinema isn't for you. I'm not surprised that they aren't enforcing masks - people working there are not paid enough to risk aggressive customers.

OliveTree75 · 16/12/2021 20:20

I'm more interested in what you went to see?
