When they say that 5-11 year olds can have the vaccine.. will your 5-11 year old be having it?

They have put this through in USA so guessing it will come soon here.
I would have it for my DD but my husband doesn’t want her to.
What are you going to do?

No way is my child having that , not until it's finished it trial period at the very least and even then I wouldn't rush !

PinkSundae · 15/12/2021 22:40

I'm so torn about this. Have two in that age bracket, one currently has the back end of a mild case of covid and he would get it given the choice. Wish I knew the right answer.

HerbertChops · 15/12/2021 22:41

9 yo had covid mildly, 11 yo had it asymptomatically. Would only get them vaccinated if needed for travel. 11yo school already saying they need to be double vaccinated for trip to France in summer.

Cantthinkofausername2022 · 15/12/2021 22:41

No. Both of my children tested positive for delta a couple of weeks ago we would not have known had they not been tested as close contacts our other child didn’t get it despite no social distancing within our home
Had they not have been exposed to Covid then my answer could potentially be different but the fact they had extremely mild symptoms I will not be getting them vaccinated
I say this as someone who is due to get my 4th vaccine in 3months time I am vulnerable; my children are not.
The vaccines are too new and as far as I know Pfizer’s has only been given to 5-11’s in the USA?
Happy to be corrected as I know as parents we all want the best for our children

Narutocrazyfox · 15/12/2021 22:43

Absolutely not.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 15/12/2021 22:43

Definitely.

Largethighsbadeyes · 15/12/2021 22:44

Yes mine will have it. Wish they'd hurry the fuck up tbh

MichelleScarn · 15/12/2021 22:44

Absolutely not

Valhalla17 · 15/12/2021 22:45

Nope!

NeverSurrender · 15/12/2021 22:45

I'm really torn, although dh, teenage dd and I have all had it. He's so little and I need to do some research before agreeing I think.

Hairbear2 · 15/12/2021 22:46

No, not for my 8 year old, she hasn’t needed it in nearly two years and is not classed as a high risk.

DoubleShotEspresso · 15/12/2021 22:46

No not at this point. I agree with above comments that this variant is an entirely different animal and likely to require a totally different vaccine longterm. I'm wanting to see far better evidence of longterm effects and also far more stringent, considered and feasible mitigation methods for schools .
I'm so angry we are in this position yet again and that this shitty, evil government remain so slow, negligent and absent of any sense of responsibility or duty to the very people they're supposedly serving.

yoshiblue · 15/12/2021 22:47

No. He's just had delta and only had a sniffle. I don't think there is any benefit for him.

Snugglepumpkin · 15/12/2021 22:47

No.

AnotherMansCause · 15/12/2021 22:50

Yes, our 9y/o has already said she wants it when available. DH & I have the virus at present, she's still negative but has been worried about catching it since the start of the pandemic so I think she'll be relieved TBH. She's been with me previously when I've gone to get my annual flu booster, she knows vaccinations are a normal thing. We wouldn't force or pressure her though.

HerRoyalNotness · 15/12/2021 22:52

My 11yo had it in the US, no issues. Last one will have to wait until March to have them. I think even if they allow for under 5s before then I’ll wait.

Cantthinkofausername2022 · 15/12/2021 22:56

@AnotherMansCause there is no way a 9 year old can give informed consent if s/he wants a vaccine or not- yes s/he can say she wants the vaccine but just to be clear s/he does not know what s/he is consenting to. As her/ his parent this decision is yours to weigh up not for a 9 year old
There is no right or wrong answer but for this is your decision to make for them

Cantthinkofausername2022 · 15/12/2021 22:59

Also just realised I jumped the gun as read you wouldn’t force or pressure her- apologies

PieMistee · 15/12/2021 23:01

Yes. Her best friend is still ill from long covid so she wants to.

soapboxqueen · 15/12/2021 23:05

Yes. Definitely

Livpool · 15/12/2021 23:05

Yes DS will be having it

Blinky21 · 15/12/2021 23:07

Errr yes why not? Unless your kids haven't had any vaccines?

MinimumChips · 15/12/2021 23:07

Yes. We’re in Australia and it’s being rolled out here in January. My two children get the flu shot each year (as do DH and I) and I am presuming the Covid shot will be another annual seasonal vaccination eventually.

EsmeraldaFudge · 15/12/2021 23:08

Yes

SummerInSun · 15/12/2021 23:09

Yes. I know covid itself would be mild for them, but it might be much more serious for any elderly / clinically vulnerable person they transmitted it to. It's the community-minded thing to do.

And pragmatically, as PP have said, if we want to travel I don't think we'll have any choice.
