Will London be locked down before Christmas?

endoftether4 · 13/12/2021 22:03

Could Londoners be locked down again this Christmas? How likely do people think this is? I’m dreading having to spend another Christmas without my family and am considering leaving early to avoid another lockdown.

@DottyHarmer

They have achieved a lockdown of sorts by fear. The behavioural scientists have been working overtime during the pandemic. It works! Mask-wearing is now 100% round here and people seem hesitant about going out and quite miserably resigned to any imminent restrictions.
Quite right too. I'm locking down as much as I can over the holiday period. Why take the risk - both for yourself, and for wider society? If the government won't do it, we'll have to exercise some common sense for ourselves.
VikingOnTheFridge · 14/12/2021 10:39

@ginnig

There will be cicil unrest if a lckdown is imposed now so close to christmas

I think it's unpredictable. If lots of people are scared they tend to comply. I had my xmas party canx last week & 2 group meals this week so it's happening by default if that makes sense.

Anecdotally I think a lot of people are doing that specifically to protect Christmas, iyswim. There are people who wouldn't otherwise modify their behaviour due to covid but want to ensure they aren't positive next week.
DottyHarmer · 14/12/2021 10:53

@Squiblet, presumably you are expecting food on your table, heat, light and water and to go to hospital if you trip over your loo-roll stockpile?

Only those with very beneficial circumstances can smugly urge others to lock down.

And sod everyone who doesn't have any choice other than to go to work Confused

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2021 10:59

YY being in a position to completely lock yourself down generally means you need all the services provided by people who don't have a choice but to leave the house for work.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 11:03

@HesterShaw1

There's now clearly enough nudging and scaremongering going on to make people believe it's a possibility.

And clearly it's working.

For fuck's sake.

This gets me too. The acceptance

Oh they'll graciously be encouraged to go out so they can continue to provide essential services to the more sensible. Only for that, though. None of this wanting to see loved ones or engage in recreation outside the home.
HesterShaw1 · 14/12/2021 11:15

No. Wanting to see friends family and to do slightly more than exist is so SELFISH and STUPID.

Key workers should only key work. The joy of being a Tesco delivery driver ought to be reward enough in itself.
alh26 · 14/12/2021 11:18

He won't lockdown just London, it will be the whole of the UK. And even if he did, are you going to listen to him? I'm certainly not. My parents are in the middle of a separation and it's been the sh1tt1iest year ever for me and my brother. This Xmas is our first Christmas split between parents since forever (we are late 20s). We will be going about our Xmas plans as normal whether there's a lockdown or not and I suspect the majority of others will do the same. It's also probably my Grandpa's last Christmas so not letting Boris tell me no for another year

HesterShaw1 · 14/12/2021 11:19

Absolutely right. Outside of keyworking, they should stay (the fuck) at home.

Socialising is just for Tories.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 11:19

I’m not sure that Quite right post was serious - can’t see original post though

Plus staying home in lockdown Is pretty awful too

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2021 11:21

I imagine the self imposed lockdown people will also want their shopping delivered, the postman bringing letters and packages, maybe a Deliveroo order/takeaway every now and again. Plus they'll want the bins emptied and maybe a plumber if there's a problem.

Chimpychoo · 14/12/2021 11:21

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus

I'm led to believe they will avoid at all costs but if necessary London will lock down first week of January
Who led you to believe that?
HesterShaw1 · 14/12/2021 11:23

Who told her? Why, someone high up in government of course. Duh.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 11:25

What a load of bs

Charles11 · 14/12/2021 11:26

A lot of people aren’t going to listen.
And why should they? The arrogant rich politicians are doing whatever they want while we plebs are controlled by nonsensical rules.
The restrictions are getting ridiculous and are completely disproportionate.
This is more about control now.

Well, there were more than a few people claiming to quite like it, particularly in the first lockdown when the novelty value was still there. And there's no denying that it's much more awful for people who don't have space, gardens and the ability to order in anything they might like to make the experience more bearable.
MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 11:29

I’m sure people do like it going by some posts on here.

Good luck to them if they want to self impose the same.

I loathed it and having two terms off school was awful.

TangfasticsAreFantastic · 14/12/2021 11:31

I've just been on a local council group meeting and they are expecting additional restrictions in January which, personally, I suspect will tie up with most people otherwise having been offered their booster.

They're calling it "Plan B +" and believe it could include:

  • bringing back 2m social distancing
  • bringing back Track and Trace
  • hospitality to be open but back to table service

I think there will then be a later addition of Covid passes with everyone expected to have their booster.

As for proper lockdowns? No. The conservative party are conservative by nature, so I don't envisage them choosing the option that would likely end up in rioting in the streets and nationwide disobedience.

If they're self imposing that's one thing, provided of course they acknowledge all the people needed to allow them this option, many of whom won't have that choice. It's when they start telling other people to do it that's the problem, especially when that includes people they expect to risk working outside the home to provide essential services.
annie55 · 14/12/2021 11:33

I could not care less if there is lockdown as I will do whatever I want anyway. Why would you not see your family?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/12/2021 11:33

- bringing back Track and Trace

I won't be using the app, it's never been fit for purpose.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2021 11:34

I didn’t see the post

I think there’s one that posts ironically - Jourdain? Usually not serious

But haven’t looked back

But yes agree people should think about who brings them what they need

DottyHarmer · 14/12/2021 11:34

I know someone who said it was “exciting”. They enjoyed stockpiling, the drama of it all, and all the public health edicts etc. I guess we’re all different Hmm

My heart could break for young people. It was do-able for a year - even two - but now it looks as if we’re truly sunk.
