All looking pretty positive.

OP posts:

Some more positive news. Maybe this will go like the other thread (the scaremongering under 5s thread) and get less interest than the scary threads. Wonder why!

I’m bumping anyway and thanks for sharing OP.

Delatron · 09/12/2021 18:48

Vaccinations are obviously key.

There doesn’t seem to be much data on prior infection immunity. I’d love to see more research on t-cell immunity. This was long lasting in SARS. Maybe it’s out there and I can’t find it.

AnyFucker · 09/12/2021 18:49

bump

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/12/2021 18:50

This would be excellent news if replicated. That’s what we need highly transmissible, mild strains to wipe out all the more virulent strains. The theory was that this would hopefully end up being another strain of the common cold. I hope this is still the theory.

the80sweregreat · 09/12/2021 18:53

Good news!
Let's hope it stays that way

Fl0w3ry · 09/12/2021 18:53

Thank you for sharing some positive news. Let’s hope this is the turning point and any potential mutations to come will gradually just get milder and milder.

Immaculatemisconception · 09/12/2021 19:37

A South African doctor has suggested the Omicron variant could signal the end of the pandemic in a trend similar to the one observed with Spanish Flu.

Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of Netcare Ltd., which operates the largest private healthcare network in South Africa told Bloomberg: “If in the second and third wave we’d seen these levels of positivity to tests conducted, we would have seen very significant increases in hospital admissions and we’re not seeing that. In our primary care clinics it is mainly people under 30-years-old. So I actually think there is a silver lining here and this may signal the end of COVID-19, with it attenuating itself to such an extent that it’s highly contagious, but doesn’t cause severe disease. That’s what happened with Spanish flu.”

Dreamstate · 09/12/2021 19:54

Now we can get trid of sage and there utterly dire predictions. Like we were told at delta ther me would be 1000 a day and that didn't happen. Then they say the same for this one and no doubt it won't happen.

Bugger off with your false predictions trying to scare people.

Definitely very little interest in positive threads. Strange...

A bump from me and the positive news that is needed.

TheKeatingFive · 09/12/2021 20:28

This is very good to hear.

Underparmummy · 09/12/2021 20:31

My main fascination is understanding how far antibodies from jabs or previous infections will protect against it and reduce transmission/hospitalisation. We want our previous arms race to count right?!

JanglyBeads · 09/12/2021 20:50

Covid does not need to stop killing its “victims” in order to transmit more, because the most infectious period is two days before symptoms start to show, when people innocently go about their normal business blissfully unaware that they are infected.

And this sketch shows why less virulent but causing more reinfections matters

MrsJackWhicher · 09/12/2021 20:54

@frazzledali

why can't it just be promising news without all the mad bastards jumping on and shouting IT'LL BE A NEW VARIANT NEXT etc? You make yourselves look deranged.
This! Well said!
OldaRailer · 09/12/2021 20:55

Good news.

Saucery · 09/12/2021 20:57

Very hopeful news.

Remmy123 · 09/12/2021 21:05

The media / government are total scaremongerers it's unreal.

I think you have misunderstood that sketch, @JanglyBeads.

What she is trying to say is that if omicron is better at reinfecting people, it could appear to be less virulent but not actually be less virulent because reinfections tend to be milder. Therefore a smaller percentage of people will have severe infections but that is due to immunity rather than the virus being less virulent.

JanglyBeads · 09/12/2021 21:17

Am happy to be corrected if necessary @cheshirecat, but in that case, why does her last tweet say this:

“So when I look at data out of South Africa or elsewhere, I am thinking not just about the proportion of cases that are severe, but also the sheer number of severe cases, which demonstrates the public health impact of the variant. 8/END“

breadwidow · 09/12/2021 21:17

I really really want to believe this good news. I want to be able to stick to Xmas (and pre Xmas plans) and the last thing I want is January lockdown but https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/09/daily-omicron-cases-in-uk-could-exceed-60000-by-christmas-sage-adviser-says?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

megustalacerveza · 09/12/2021 21:18

@UnmentionedElephantDildo

Whether it gives a better picture fir NHS depends on his many cases there are.

Say it causes only half the number of hospitalisations (1% rather than 2%), but the number of cases is twice as high (escapes immunity, highly transmissible) then we still have the same number in hospital.

Not posting to be a doom monger, just to point out that controlling transmission matters

This.

This a billion times. Even if it's milder for almost everyone, the fact it's far more transmissable is a serious problem for a country with a crumbling health service. A small percentage of a very large number is enough to overload hospitals.

pommedeterre · 09/12/2021 21:24

The sage folk love being in the media don’t they…

OldaRailer · 09/12/2021 21:28

I'm as prepared as I'll ever be.
The main opportunity for infection is my appointment for a booster never week in a massive vaccination hall.
🤷

SweetPen · 09/12/2021 21:28

Sounds good. No off to have your booster people!

SweetPen · 09/12/2021 21:29

Now off to have your booster
