Is your works Christmas do going ahead?

Mine is supposed to be on the 17th.. a big gathering with all staff in a hall, food and drinks and dancing and partying. Also casino tables and no doubt a lot of people sharing the same air closely with no masks and lots of contact, hugging etc.

Is this right? I feel uneasy about it and surprised it's not been cancelled yet..

Is yours going ahead/been cancelled?

Thanks.

Sorry I mean they have the new variant.

@gersteddybears that’s what I’m worried about, I don’t want to screw up Christmas for me and my family. Our works “do” is on the 18th, I’m really considering pulling out, even though I will get a hard time for it.

Paddingtonthebear · 07/12/2021 16:28

Ours is still going ahead. If anyone tests positive for covid at the moment they won’t necessarily know if they have the new variant or not, public health are saying only a small percentage of tests are being picked for the sequencing. Just pot luck really if you find out or not. So Loads of people will be close contacts and not isolating because they won’t know if it’s the new variant or not. January could be interesting..!

My team meal will be cancelled (nhs) but I’ll go out with my immediate team - 8 of us.

Post above all about the icu Spanish hospital staff Christmas party that turned into a super spreader event.

Fruitygal · 07/12/2021 18:34

Think of it like this 1/50-60 people have covid this week. Out of adults of working age between 70-80% are vaccinated. So in a big works party where there’s a buffet, dancing and lots if mixing etc there may be 150-200 people. On average 3-4 have covid and are infectious. On average 40-60 people in the room have not had both or any vaccines these people are at a 30x greater risk of getting properly sick with covid. The vast majority of the rest should get it like cold/flu as they are vaccinated - some will have had the vaccine but not produced an immune response due to being drug related immunocomprised for example as on steroid tablets due to RA etc These people may also get much sicker.

Fruitygal · 07/12/2021 18:36

Then there is the inconvenience of being sick or isolating on the run up to Christmas …. I’m going for the smaller gatherings while seated and knowing my friends have laterally flowed. Still having fun while trying to minimise risk.

@gersteddybears wow that's mad all 20 of them got Omicron!!

Think I've made my mind up, even if it goes ahead I'm not going, too close to Xmas and too risky!!

Thanks all for your replies and insights! Stay well everyone XO

I had a Christmas lunch with just my boss & her partner last week. Our team Christmas lunch is meant to be on 17th but it's in London & would involve a 4hr round train trip for me plus tube so have decided it's too much of a risk so close to Christmas. The big works Christmas do was meant to be this week but was cancelled.
