I'm happy masks are back !

I mean, of course I would rather the pandemic was completely over. But whilst cases are high, I'm happy they're back. I never stopped wearing mine.

And now I'm more comfortable going into shops with my unmasked DD. Feels a bit safer for her. She's too young to wear a mask.

I suppose we now know the mindset of the people who abuse others in the streets

Depressing, isn't it.

I've said it all along. The aggressive usual suspects from this board are very often found on benefits bashing threads. One in particular is a fan of "don't breed them if you can't feed them". Yet they pretend on here that they're caring people.

homealoneagain1 · 29/11/2021 23:25

I have followed every rule, had every vaccine but I am bloody sick of masks.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/11/2021 23:40

Whoop! Who needs to hear and lip read other humans anyway Hmm
I'd nearly forgotten just how much I lurve panic attacks/ sensory overwhelm in public places. Happy dayz.
But hey, it's just a little thing like going up the stairs (with a broken leg).

Whammyyammy · 29/11/2021 23:42

You're happy that people have to wear useless paper face masks out in public... easily pleased.... and a bit weird.... whatever floats your boat

Whammyyammy · 29/11/2021 23:45

Also I won't be wearing one this time. Not exempt, won't be explaining to anyone at all, just won't be wearing one. Good luck to anyone that challenges me

You would save staff a lot of stress and hassle if you just say you're exempt though?
ollyollyoxenfree · 29/11/2021 23:48

d'oh just saw you're not exempt @Whammyyammy

well not much I can say to that Grin

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2021 23:56

I think @Whammyyammy quite fancies a fight about it. Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/11/2021 23:58

Masks at dawn lol

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2021 00:00

I can imagine a lot of that going on sadly. People going into shops maskless on purpose just to get a reaction and maybe an argument. It would be like a real life AIBU thread.

dabbydeedoo · 30/11/2021 00:21
@firef1y - on the subject of eye contact, have you tried looking at a spot directly above the eyes? Sort of high eyelid area? People remark on my impressive grasp of eye contact (because I couldn't possibly be autistic due to that, right? 🙄😉), but I'm really either looking above their eyes, or straight through them 😉 I really wish society would back off on the 'look at me' directive, it's incredibly unhelpful.

And for anyone who had mentioned glasses steaming up, search for something called an anti-fog mask clip. There's a few places/people selling them - basically 3d printed plastic clips that slide on to a mask, which give a closer fit around the nose than the typical nose wires do. I use one whenever I have to wear a mask longer than a few minutes, and they stop my glasses fogging up. I can recommend a seller if wanted, but didn't want it to look like an advert 😂

And whoever it was that made the patronising comment about people saying masks are warm, asking if people had ever heard of a scarf, actually there's many reasons some people may not be able to wear or tolerate scarves, especially over their mouths - most obviously sensory issues, or previous trauma. Not unlike the reason many can't wear a mask and ask people to be more understanding and sensitive.
Where can I get this nose clip please? I'm sick to death of my glasses fogging up...it's actually really dangerous.

User3456 · 30/11/2021 00:24

I agree OP
And I agree with DumplingsAndStew - you would think people who are exempt because of a medical condition and can't wear one themselves would feel safer with more people wearing them.
Let's hope the addition of masks is enough to avoid more severe restrictions.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 30/11/2021 00:52

I agree OP, it seems wise to wear masks in shops now that a new, possibly more contagious variant has arrived on the scene. We protect others by wearing a (properly worn) mask, but we also reduce the viral load/risk for ourselves, so they are useful.

I struggle with wearing masks - my nose runs constantly and my glasses steam up, no matter what type I wear. So I have respect for all the retail workers, nurses, and others who have worn masks at work throughout the pandemic - I know I would not cope wearing ome for hours on end.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 30/11/2021 00:59

@DumplingsAndStew Those clips sound useful, I will have a look for them. All the masks I wear have nose wires, but don't really seal well enough to stop the warm air condensing on my glasses.

knittingaddict · 30/11/2021 04:57

@Sparklingbrook

Well anyone not wanting to wear one just because has all day today to go around all the shops and take lots of train rides without one on while they still can.
Contrary to my expectations that didn't happen if my experience yesterday is anything to go by.

We went shopping at a big shopping mall on Saturday. I usually shop online, but needed to use the shops for a couple of things. I was amazed at the huge numbers not wearing masks or socially distancing. It was busy and we left asap.

Had to go into town yesterday and I would say 99% were wearing masks again. The tiny few that didn't stuck out like a sore thumb. Thankfully very few seemed to want to take advantage of a last day of "freedom". It was good to see.

RichTeaRichTea · 30/11/2021 05:16

“ But with a small one, they can't really wear them. So I feel just a little bit better and comfortable to take her to the shops. I've avoided it entirely since the summer. But she really likes to go out and look around at things, so I'll be happier to take her now. ”

The interesting thing about this is that a year or so ago you would have been absolutely shredded for this viewpoint - taking your unmasked daughter shopping for her entertainment because the risks are lower to her, rather than considering the risks that she (unmasked) poses to others. I felt very judged for taking my small children into any shops, and on here people felt they had to clarify the circumstances in which they had no choice about taking children in. I’m glad that you feel able to do it (and my children also like helping with the supermarket shop etc and it is a useful activity to fill an afternoon) but it’s so interesting how the response on here has changed (in a good way).

garlictwist · 30/11/2021 05:45

I didn't know masks were back. I went to the supermarket last night and no one was wearing one. Not even the staff.

Officially it's from today, but yesterday people in our area appear to have anticipated the rule change and the vast majority were wearing them.
knittingaddict · 30/11/2021 05:48

It's been all over the news.

Malteser71 · 30/11/2021 06:52

No empiricist, are you

MummyPop00 · 30/11/2021 09:12

Yep those masks & vax passports have been working magnificently in Western Europe haven’t they?

I'm happy masks are back !
ColinTheKoala · 30/11/2021 09:19

yes I thought more people were wearing them when I went into town yesterday.

By the way if anyone reading this ceremonially threw theirs away in July, you can get a set of 3 cotton ones from Superdrug for £2.99 and Which? recommended them as being quite effective.

Cariah · 30/11/2021 11:05

Masks protect others not yourself. I wore a mask all along but I was aware that I wasn’t protected, because other people’s masks (which they weren’t wearing) would protect me more than my own mask. So I’m glad everyone has to wear a mask again. Especially because my youngest child is too young for a mask so it’s safer for him to go to the shops now.
