I'm happy masks are back !

I mean, of course I would rather the pandemic was completely over. But whilst cases are high, I'm happy they're back. I never stopped wearing mine.

And now I'm more comfortable going into shops with my unmasked DD. Feels a bit safer for her. She's too young to wear a mask.

Good for you!
I'm not. And I won't be wearing one. Just as I haven't for the last 18m. As I've said in previous threads. I live in a large city. Low numbers. And even when masks were compulsory last time. There was probably only 40% of people wearing them.

saltedcaramel1 · 29/11/2021 14:06

I am happy for you to wear one as you believe it matters, go for your life, but let's not pretend it will have an actual difference for you.

@hamstersarse

Sigh, the impact of me wearing or not wearing a mask is neglible.

On a population level, they reduce transmission and viral load in enclosed spaces, with very little negatives in comparison to other NPIs.

hamstersarse · 29/11/2021 14:12

Sigh.....but they don't though do they @saltedcaramel1

As seen on this thread, It is nothing more than an intuition based on faulty representations of the size of the virus particles.

Being a mask promoter isn't really doing any good in the scheme of things, it is just pure diversion.

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/11/2021 14:17

I'm sure there were demonstrations on.social media showing that unless worm properly , they way they would be in a.medical setting and ergo changed regularly , not touched/filled with and worn over the nose properly then actually they aren't much cop.

In fact speaking as a retail worker I can say that bringing in masks merely achieved the goal of making customers feel social distancing no longer applied because they had their masks on.

They were also up down up down up down depending on whether they could be seen or not.

Very few wore them properly and absolutely no one was able to not fiddle with them meaning any droplets they caught were then all over everything they touched.

And guess what. I had ti pick up all the discarded masks off the floor.

@hamstersarse

there is good quality evidence to demonstrate a 10% reduction

you're trying to dismiss this by linking a blog post that cricises various aspects of the methodology

this is not peer review and this is not how quality of evidence is assessed

you seem to be anti any kind of coronavirus suppression policies though, and vaccination of the general population, so not sure why you're pretending it's just masks you try and dismiss as usesful

hamstersarse · 29/11/2021 14:19

@saltedcaramel1

I'm just against bullshit. I am not against vaccines and am vaccinated.

Figgygal · 29/11/2021 14:25

I don't see it making a blind bit of difference I was in Wales last week where mask wearing his mandatory people were not doing it I went to London last week and was on public transport where mask wearing with mandatory half the people there weren't doing it either.
The government never should have relaxed the mask wearing rules in the 1st place People will very much perceive this is going backwards which they were promised wouldn't happen

Masks spread germs make sure you sanitise your hands thoroughly before taking yours off!

i never see ANYONE do this!

We know that the risk of fomite transmission is low, and that airbourne transmission is high.
avocadotofu · 29/11/2021 14:38

I completely agree. I never stopped wearing mine either.

Sanitise hands? There's an alarmingly high percentage of customers who don't even wash their hands after using the toilet let alone sanitise their hands 🤢

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 29/11/2021 14:53

Me too!!

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 29/11/2021 14:59

@EndoplasmicReticulum

I'm enjoying wearing mine today as it's freezing out there and it's keeping my nose warm.
I'm enjoying wearing mine. I can hide my double chin and cold sore
dottiedodah · 29/11/2021 15:16

Never taken mine off! Been wearing it in several shops where they ask you to wear a mask if you can . Still hand cleanse even when taking dog out!

This.

I have to wear a mask for work, have continued to wear them in shops etc and have always been good with hand hygiene. Can’t understand what all the drama is about.

Gwrach · 29/11/2021 15:43

People don't wear them properly 90% of people don't wear them properly I'd guess.

People fiddle with them, keep them in their pockets for months without washing them, re-use a disposable one over and over again. Touch mask then touch surfaces. Gaps at the side, not over the nose properly. Non medical grade masks are worn.

Honestly just stay away from people and wash your hands regularly will probably help more than the skanky bit of cloth shoved in your pocket on a daily basis 🤮

HesterShaw1 · 29/11/2021 16:03

I'm genuinely not being goady, but if Covid is an airborne virus and fomite transmission was debunked as a major factor in spread, why the "people touch them so they don't work" narrative?

Surely if Covid is spread through breath it doesn't matter if they touch them or reuse them or keep them in a pocket?

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2021 16:06

I put mine on and take it off using the elastic that goes round my ears and don't touch the mask.

I have seen a handful of people not wearing masks correctly but all this talk of grubby/skanky masks in pockets or at the bottom of handbags for two years isn't something I'm familiar with. I think it's just assumptions to add weight to the masks are useless so I'm not doing it argument.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 29/11/2021 16:21

I'm pleased the masking rule is back too OP. It should never have been stopped as so many people can not be trusted to act in the best interests.

Imagine how scary it must be for a CEV person to go on a bus or in to a shop and face maskless, gormless fuckers.

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/11/2021 16:22

Its honestly not assumptions. I work in retail I saw it every shift. Hanging out pockets, dropped on floor and picked up and re used. Put on after a visit to the toilet after they couldn't possibly have had time to wash hands , masks so old I have to repair them for customers with tape.

We were handing out loads of them just to try and make sure they had a clean one for a bit.

And those were just the ones I didn't have to pick up off the shop floor.

Sure that's disgusting and likely to give the dirty bugger in question all sorts of bugs.

But why would it spread Covid in particular? Give. that it's they tell us it's spread through breathed out droplets?

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/11/2021 16:33

Shall we give surgeons one in that state and see what the infection rates are after ?

Oh and unless there are a large subset of humans who have gills or breathe through their ears I doubt the mask is doing much, hanging from the ears, on my shop floor, being worn under the nose or top lip or chin.

Quite.

The risk of wearing a grubby mask is to the wearer anyway - similar to not bothering washing your pillowcase and sleeping on it night after night.

It doesn't impact on it's ability to reduce transmission, unless it is actually wet.

Kosmin · 29/11/2021 16:34

Presumably they reduce transmission despite these factors. If everyone wore medical grade masks and followed procedures 100%, presumably transmission would be reduced more.

Even if masks don't stop transmission, isn't the reduction of viral load helpful?
