Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

OP posts:
flipflop76 · 27/11/2021 20:38

I currently feel like I'd rather die of Covid or just end my life than live like this for the rest of my days. I really miss life pre covid and feel like it will never, ever return.

NewMum0305 · 27/11/2021 20:39

OP, I disagree with you but understand what you are saying. The government’s whole “Freedom Day” approach was totally misleading and gave people hope of going back to normal life which they knew wasn’t true. So I understand why you are feeling so despairing.

On the other hand, what’s the alternative? It’s a new variant, we don’t know how bad it is yet and so while we find our, we increase the mitigations. It’s depressing to think that life is going to be like this for the foreseeable future but it is what it is, COVID is here and it’s shit but we can take simple steps to save lives while scientists do their thing and try to keep up.

A work colleague of mine (double if not triple jabbed) was recently hospitalised with Covid so I do judge anyone who chooses not to wear a mask simply because they are tired of restrictions.

But I get it, it’s shit.

Bagadverts · 27/11/2021 20:39

One thing we can definitely be campaigning for is rich countries rolling out vaccines to areas with populations who haven’t been offered one jab never mind boosters. It won’t be easy but even in war torn countries there can be ceasefires. It isn’t just the vaccines but infrastructure, but hopefully as well as saving lives it will lower the chance of a variant that escapes vaccines.

Basically what your saying is you’re too selfish to protect the vulnerable by wearing a mask.

Christ this again.

Who exactly are you protecting now? The unvaccinated?

So on MN you're selfish if you're unvaccinated because you pose a risk to those who are vaccinated.

And you're selfish if you're vaccinated and refuse to wear a mask to protect the vulnerable (which will include unvaccinated). Who are also selfish for not being vaccinated.

You lot are bonkers.

itispersonal · 27/11/2021 20:40

Op could you not view it as wearing a seatbelt, if you drive you wear a seatbelt. And wearing a mask is just something you do when in crowded spaces, during peak germ season.

It's something that I think we will continue to do and probably like Asian countries should have been doing for a while, in general.

It doesn't hinder your life wearing a mask but could maybe save a life. That for me, makes it a no brainier.

5keletor · 27/11/2021 20:40

To those posting from the rest of the UK/world, not all of us in England are tantruming about masks. My toddler has also stamped his feet and proclaimed he's not doing it, but they was about something else. 😂

flipflop76 · 27/11/2021 20:40

@DappledOliveGroves

I'm not going to wear a mask again. I've had Covid, I could just as easily get cancer, get hit by a bus or die of something else. Everyone will die one day and I'm not tiptoeing around a virus that will mutate for the foreseeable future.

I'm not a Covid denier. I've had both vaccines. But I'm damned if I'm prepared to live like this. And it terrifies me that there's so much willingness to disregard civil liberties in the naive and arrogant hope that we can control a virus.

Yes!!

This is how I feel too.
QueenofDestruction · 27/11/2021 20:40

Op, the world changes we have had a very easy time compared to people having to go through rationing etc, Masks are here to stay and changes to travel etc restrictions will change with variants for a long period. The world has changed, nobody is happy about that but we try our best to minimise spread to others.

Zampa · 27/11/2021 20:40

@keepOutOfTheFridgeDerek

  1. I caught Covid from my 6 year old. We don't wear masks at home
  1. Masks protect other people from you. Not you from other people
DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 27/11/2021 20:41

If there's variants forever, then I'll wear a mask forever. It's honestly not that much of an inconvenience and I'd rather that than be struck down with covid.

toomuchlaundry · 27/11/2021 20:41

I don't want there to be a pandemic anymore but unfortunately there is.

Evesgarden · 27/11/2021 20:41

@Ireallydontcare55

This was probably not the right site to post this on.
No its not. You're talking to the wrong crowd here.

But I hear you. I am worried about xmas as we are flying abroad, I will be devastated if it gets cancelled.

On a side note, I have never stopped wearing a mask as I come in to contact with vulnerable people, so am prepared to do that for them however we do need to get on with this now and not freak out at every new variant ( which is a completely natural thing for a virus to do doesn't make it any worse)

sst1234 · 27/11/2021 20:41

Well done you for being so complaint/docile. Oh, and have some brownie points for being patronising too.
NeverBeenNormal · 27/11/2021 20:41

@Ireallydontcare55

What worries me is how willingly people have accepted the idea of wearing a mask for the rest of their life potentially
What is the issue about wearing a mask in a confined indoor space any rate? If it causes you anxiety, then you can be exempt. If you just don't like it, think about how it actually helps other people by mitigating the spread - not just of COVID - but of airborne diseases generally.

I've just sat in a mask in an old lady's house for an hour keeping her company and listening to her talk about her life because I want to protect her from anything I may be inadvertently carrying. It's an hour of my time. It is mildly inconvenient for me. It helped her. It's worth it.

Tabbydancer · 27/11/2021 20:41

@Ireallydontcare55

We have vaccines and booster shots now, if people are ending up intensive care then it’s likely they would have done anyway.
It’s like you don’t understand the newspapers Initially the 30 per cent plus people who weren’t vaccinated were dominating hospitals Then the people who had not received a booster and they were at the waning end of vaccination So if you get a booster the odds are you won’t end up in critical care over Xmas Unless the new variant gets you Which it might if no one makes any effort to slow the spread Also our normal has given us huge numbers of excess deaths compared with our countries and we have a government whose policy is to tolerate high numbers of excess deaths
Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2021 20:42

This has literally never happened before.

Exactly. This pandemic is new.

RampantIvy · 27/11/2021 20:43

@Ireallydontcare55

As I said, it’s not the act of wearing a mask, it’s bringing back restrictions when we now have people triple jabbed, and after being told that restrictions were over. There will always be variants
Blame the anti vaxxers.

Two members of DH's anti vax family now have covid Sad

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/11/2021 20:43

I honestly couldn't get worked up about this. Wearing a mask is hardly the same as not having enough food or access to fresh water. Its a pandemic, they tend to hang around.

bergam · 27/11/2021 20:43

Strange how this virus won't transmit in the pub/restaurant/wedding reception/gig etc., but masks are required for public transport and shopping. I am sure there is an explanation!

I wear one, have no problem with it at all. Flu rates were amazingly low last Winter, due I think to mask wearing.

It is no big deal to me, but to some it appears that good old English exceptionalism is always there. OK for others, but not for me.

HarrisonStickle · 27/11/2021 20:44

I really wish that we were a scoiety where, if we had a cold, we immediately mask up before going out and about.

I'd love to have the fewer colds of the last couple of years on a permanent basis. Alas, we're not that society, so I welcome back indoor mask wearing for as long as it lasts.

Yes, I'm fed up of it. But I like the knock on effect of not picking up everything going every single year.

A couple of days after "Freedom Day" I was in a shop and a man was there without a mask. He sneezed all over the display, not bothering to cover his face at all. That's disgusting any way you look at it, and it's the sort of arsehole I'm happy most people will mask up against.

Staffy1 · 27/11/2021 20:44

I’m at the point where I am fed up with it all. Can’t take any more bad news or worrying with covid and non-covid related problems (made 100 times worse by all the covid crap).

FindingMeno · 27/11/2021 20:44

I'm so ready for this covid thing to be over, but until we know the ins and outs of this new variant, a bit of caution in the form of face masks isn't a big deal to try to protect others.

SheWentWest · 27/11/2021 20:45

I just really don't understand what people don't get about this. It is purely and simply about not overwhelming the nhs. It's the difference between watching your loved one dying in hospital having had the best medical care available to them and watching your loved one die at home with no assistance because you called an ambulance 3 hours ago and it didn't come.

Cherrytart23 · 27/11/2021 20:45

I agree there will always be new variants off it. What is the point of vaccine if we are going to keep get restricted. People are being force to have these vaccines or lose their jobs an then this happens anyway It's so frustrating. Are we going to be forced to have a vaccine for every new variant that comes along.
