What I don't understand about anti-vaxxers is how malevolent some of them are. If I decided I didn't want a covid jab, I certainly wouldn't picket hospitals and health centres. Recently an elected legislator in Manitoba faced a demonstration of about 30 people at her home, and someone left a noose on her lawn. www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/life/health/alberta-politician-angry-after-covid-19-protesters-leave-gallows-noose-at-her-house-575661242.html

A recent news story on booster jabs provoked dozens of responses poking fun at "sheeple" and referencing Big Phama and similar themes.

Why are so many people so vitriolic about the vaccine?

@milkyaqua

What’s the alternative?

A bit of self-awareness and a spot of basic humanity wouldn't go astray.

You aren’t being very specific.

Government mandates have failed to stop the spread, measures like lockdowns and masking have never been proven to do anything at all. We knew this before COVID so it shouldn’t be surprising.

All you can do is protect yourself. Someone else’s mask or someone else’s vaccine will not help you. Sooner we all admit that, the better off we will be to actually help the vulnerable.

Given your response to my post that you quoted bore, to my mind, no relevance to the post quoted, I think asking me to be specific is a bit much!

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 07:18

@AngelaBlack I’m looking for the data that says 7 children died in one week. I can’t see that anywhere.

Ok. How is that going to stop the virus spreading? I agree with user on this. Vulnerable groups were prioritised for vaccination. Yes, it can wane a bit faster but now we have a booster campaign.

There have always been vulnerable groups who were at risk of annual respiratory viruses, chickenpox etc and they had have to decide if they are prepared to go out and risk coming into contact with people who could make them unwell. We’ve had our own experience of this with family members undergoing cancer treatment.

You haven’t addressed the bit about government mandates not working, your mask and your vaccine does not protect anyone else.

You haven't addressed my post. At all! Your replies are total non sequiturs.

Ah you don’t have an answer then.

Of course you don’t. You just want to cry about how unfair it all is but have no workable solutions.

WickedWitchOfTheTrent · 15/11/2021 08:00

I think it's a few that tar the majority and it's usually because they are the more vocal, outspoken and visible ones.

Most anti vaxers keep themselves to themselves, don't preach and respect other peoples opinions and choices, a really small % of anti vaxers are the ones you see protesting outside hospitals etc. but because they are doing this, being seen and being vocal people think all anti vaxers are like this.

AngelaBlack · 15/11/2021 08:10

@Trixiefirecracker I screenshot the data from the ONS link fir you. No deaths in week 43 i2020 but 7 in 2021 in the same week.

AngelaBlack · 15/11/2021 08:28

Unfortunately the two I know are the vocal type. Apparently my kids will be orphans because we are vaccinated and if I let DD have it I can forget about being a Grandmother.
Vile but perhaps more vile using child sudden deaths even 11 year olds who won't have been vaccinated to further their cause.

And you apparently are incapable of reading the post you have quoted, and then badgered me with unrelated questions over. Weird.

Quite often the protesters you see aren’t actually antivaxxers - they’re protesting against vaccines passports/mandates. The media calling them anti vaccine protests seems to be to discredit them/make people turn against them etc.
Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 08:58

@bumbleymummy but there’s plenty of videos showing anti vaxxers at work, so you can’t minimise it. It’s really disgusting. Targeting schools too.

MaxNormal · 15/11/2021 09:00

I've been called an anti-vaxxer and I don't think I am. DH is vaccinated, albeit that he just had them to facilitate work travel.

I'm just obsessed with informed consent and bodily autonomy due to my own medical history.

bumbleymummy · 15/11/2021 09:01

Yes, there are. But I also know of several large protests that were against vaccine passports and were portrayed as ‘antivax’. Suggesting that there are thousands of peoples out protesting against the vaccine itself (when the numbers taking that extreme position) is very misleading and just stirs resentment.

bumbleymummy · 15/11/2021 09:01

When the numbers taking that extreme position are quite small* - not sure what happened to the rest of that sentence!

Yes I didn’t get the shot because I thought I was personally at risk. I did it for work-related travel.

I hope I don’t have to get more pointless shots just to keep my job or see my family.

Sian73 · 15/11/2021 09:11

This may help people understand 'anti - vaxxers'. It's just 5 minutes long.

This is one of the editors of the BMJ speaking - Peter Doshis.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 09:16

Peter Doshi is a massive anti vaxxer, not just anti-covid either.

SLH2003 · 15/11/2021 09:32

I know one antivaxxer, he caught covid just over 2 weeks ago. He messaged me that it was no worse than any cold he has had. After a week he was rushed to hospital with breathing difficulties, he is currently in the ICU ward fighting for his life.

Sian73 · 15/11/2021 09:35

The above summarises who Peter Doshi is.

Feel sorry for this guy

But honestly, he’s probably over 40 and maybe gained weight since his 20s. He likely has a skewed perspective on his overall health.

Many such cases.

This is part of the problem—we haven’t stressed the personal risk factors enough (particularly weight) and pretend like risk is spread more evenly than it actually is.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 10:09

@Sian73 I know who he is. He is anti the flu vaccine too. Just because he has letters behind his name doesn’t automatically mean his research is correct.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/11/2021 10:12

He also doesn’t think the HIV virus causes AIDS.
