Shouldn’t need to blackmail anyone. Everyone should be having the vaccine because it’s the right thing to do. Very straightforward, nothing to think about.

Iggly · 20/10/2021 21:11
@Iggly www.popsci.com/science/hand-washing-prevents-covid-delta/
It removes it from your hands but the issue is breathing in the virus, not eating it.

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 21:11

What was the blackmail?

I can see if vaccine passports had happened people might be annoyed

I don’t get taking the unnecessary risk, esp given rates in hospitals but without passports where is this blackmail

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 21:12

It is airborne but also I remember a communal bin thing a while back - passing that way - maybe Melbourne

Inastatus · 20/10/2021 21:16

@iggly - if you read the article it acknowledges that both breathing in and ingesting the virus are issues! Science shows that hand washing remains an important preventative tool.

Mr Javid told a Downing Street news conference: "If not enough people get their booster jabs, if not enough of those people that were eligible for the original offer... if they don't come forward, if people don't wear masks when they really should in a really crowded place with lots of people that they don't normally hang out with, if they're not washing their hands and stuff, it's going to hit us all. And it would of course make it more likely we're going to have more restrictions."

To me this constitutes blackmail.

Hetty0 · 20/10/2021 21:18

Oh it's like January all over again. If the NHS website lets you book, this is because it knows you're eligible and it wants you to book. It's not possible to skip the queue or anything like that @herecomesthsun

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2021 21:20

Annoying if we get more restrictions if preventable. I hope not.

Maybe unvaccinated will dwindle at some point in hospitals, hopefully

Silverswirl · 20/10/2021 21:23
@Silverswirl couldn't you have visited in-laws under the caring exemptions?
Not really because there are 2 of them and all the exemptions last year were only for single people. We could have split the family and one my husband gone but they don’t live near and we have 3 young children who were so excited about Christmas. Plus having school age kids and covid being rife last year with no vaccinations yet we were really worried about taking it with us and infecting them

Nuttymonkey · 20/10/2021 21:23

How about 'if the pcr tests give false negatives..... Its going to spread like wild fire as people think its just a cold'!!! Or, if the vaccine roll out to children isn't fast enough... Or, if the schools aren't provided with enough resources to help with ventilation, extra space, supply teachers when teachers are off sick.... Or, if the boosters aren't offered fast enough.... Or, if the vaccines aren't good enough at stopping transmission or don't stop a certain amount of deaths'....

"Why should anyone have to blackmail us into getting vaccines? They are a good idea.

There are people in other parts of the world who would dearly like to have access to vaccines, we are lucky to have them"

Because of free will and human rights. Nothing comes without a side effect/possible danger. Its down to the individual to make that choice thats right for them. No one should be forced nor black mailed into having the vaccine. Before anyone complains that vaccine refuses are selfish, remember all the homeless, elderly and vunerable people and those literally living on the bread line. There are many good people out there, let's not stigmatise them for not having the vaccine. Remember not that long ago the gay/irish/black & trangender people were heavily stigmatised, here in the UK. Please don't let the government brainwash you, into discriminating against unvaccinated people.

No, it's stating a fact. How on earth is it blackmail?!
Nuttymonkey · 20/10/2021 21:26

And how is it OK to not wear masks around familiar people (even at a crowded party for instance) .. But wrong to not wear masks around unfamiliar people in a crowded place... Because covid doesn't pass from family and friends?? If anything it's worse as you tend to trust your friends and family don't have it and are closer to them giving hugs a d standing close by etc.

Muchmorethan · 20/10/2021 21:36

I've had my booster. Think that's because I'm a nurse though

Backyard72 · 20/10/2021 21:43

Twatbadger Fuckface.

Brilliant.

Yup, totally agree.

I took that to mean people you don't live with, rather than the way you've taken it Confused

I was just saying this to DH tonight, just because you are in a place with loads of people you know doesn't mean they don't have Covid. This was the reason one of the cabinet ministers said they didn't wear masks in the Commons, because they all knew each other.
Ilovelblue · 20/10/2021 21:46

Another great one liner from the nun who can forge documents.

Ilovelblue · 20/10/2021 21:47

Ooop, wrong thread, sorry!

Pineappleheart · 20/10/2021 22:05

@PurpleDaisies

Call him the Prime Minister or Boris Johnson.

You’re welcome to refer to him as that. I’ll call him boris. Ta.

Yup - me too 😝
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/10/2021 22:12

I loathe Javid trying to blackmail us into getting vaccines. I also feel restrictions in the form of Plan B are coming anyway ...

As I said on another thread, there's an irony in that further restrictions could actually harm vaccine take-up, if folk come to feel "I had it, it's made no difference because we're back here anyway, so sod it"

It's not the first time figures have appeared to "bounce" when the government have a message to deliver, when they want the Covid Act renewed or whatever, but it's often wise to be careful what's wished for

3luckystars · 20/10/2021 22:13

Please tell me where that thread about the nun is!! Sounds great.

justasking111 · 20/10/2021 22:15

We're still wearing masks in shops, washing hands etc in Wales, our cases are rising day after day. This latest version seems more infectious a teacher friend is still coughing after a month. She's back at work and says infections in the school are a runaway train now. Our deaths aren't rising that much around 50 on ventilation

But what has being homeless, elderly or vulnerable got to do with making the choice not to have the vaccine?

I’m also not sure there is a comparison to be made between being discriminated against for being gay, Irish, black or transgender and people who make a choice not to have a vaccine.

I agree people can choose whether to have the vaccine or not but, as is said time and time again, with choices come consequences, with rights come responsibilities. By all means don’t have the vaccine but if you then want to have a career as a medic, nurse or care home worker you may find you can’t. That’s not discrimination though. It’s about protecting vulnerable people in our society, not about discriminating against the individual.

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/10/2021 22:24

This is what happens when the public wrongly assume having the vaccine makes them immune and absolves them of any responsibility for those around them. The government sold the vaccines as our ticket to freedom, Yet here we are, mid October facing the prospect of Plan B (which will no doubt come too late and lead to Plan C).

We all know the story now, the restrictions will be too little too late and the cases will continue to rise. Throw in potential Brexit chaos and it’s looking to be not quite the winter everyone hoped for.
