Are we locking down again?

And if so will they do more of the furlough and shutting things down?

Schools?

Please No!

I’m reading that this might be happening.

I hope we do. Anything to protect schools and their education.

Warhertisuff · 22/10/2021 06:56

@julieca

UK - 2.036 deaths per million population Latvia - 1596 deaths per million population
If you want to play that game:

Italy - 2,183
Belgium - 2,217
USA - 2,260
Romania - 2,280
Brazil - 2,819
Hungary - 3,164
Bosnia - 3,467
Peru - 5,956

and a further 17 countries all with worse death rates than the U.K, and that doesn't even include the likes of Russia which almost certainly has a far higher rate than reported. We might not be a beacon of good Covid management, but we're not exactly outliers.

Warhertisuff · 22/10/2021 07:03

Further to my last post, what js interesting though (at least to me) is that the much derided (by some) projections of Neil Ferguson and Imperial College of death rates back in early 2020 in which they forecast 250,000-500,000 of Covid was allowed to let rip though an unvaccinated population with no mitigations are being shown to be on the money. If Peru's rate was replicated here, that would equate to 400,000 deaths.

Most schools will be "out the other side" of their current Covid waves even if we implemented it now, so I'm not sure that really helps. It's not going to get worse and worse and worse in schools... Many posters have said theCovid wave has passed in their schools (it hasn't hit my children's schools yet so I'm not posting from a smug place) and things have settled, though of course it's pretty shit to be in the midst of it when it's happening.
RoseStar · 22/10/2021 07:55

@Warhertisuff the very notion of a wave though is that it’s followed by another and another and another, peaks and troughs which will continue as long as we do nothing to stop them.

MarshaBradyo · 22/10/2021 08:25

The waves have been caused by suppression and lift so far

This one is due to about half children being exposed at same time

After it the picture will change due to high immunity

Delatron · 22/10/2021 10:15

We’re talking about waves of a pandemic. There will always be an exit wave (and then it becomes endemic). We’ve artificially suppressed it so many times we’ve manipulated the ‘waves’

CornishGem1975 · 22/10/2021 11:33

Exactly that! We've caused the waves to a massive extent. If we lockdown again now, we'll suppress it. Then we'll open up again and guess what will happen!

We saved a lot of lives by locking down.

However, it would be really good if we don't have to lockdown again over the winter, and I'm hoping that with boosters and some cautious behaviour we won't have to.

julieca · 22/10/2021 20:42

Why would anyone be cautious? People are being told it is inevitable they will get it. Boosters are hard to get, and it is getting too cold to socialise outside.

Benjispruce4 · 22/10/2021 20:46

Far better to be cautious . We should have continued the isolation of household if a member tests positive, kept masks in indoor areas and transport and when moving around restaurants etc. I was happy with that. Should also enforce vaccine passports.

I agree that removing the need to isolate if you are close contact is nuts!

Vaccine passports make no sense.. it should be testing for everyone

Plan B will bring in passports that bans everyone not double jabbed. No negative tests allowed. People that are double jabbed are still catching and spreading Covid. It makes no sense!

worriedatthemoment · 22/10/2021 20:52

@julieca only a few are actually eligible foe boosters some on here seem to be trying go book them when they only had there last jab a couple months ago
But i do agree it seems a case of when rather than if now

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/10/2021 20:56

I wouldn't go anywhere if I had to test every time! Ive never done a test on myself as there no way I could shove something down my own throat or up my nose.

I would vote with my feet anyway. This "papers please" turn this is taking is not acceptable.

Some people have no choice otherwise society would grind to a halt. These sort of posts amaze me tbh.

The nose only LFT is like nothing. Seriously.
Benjispruce4 · 22/10/2021 22:20

It’s a good job you don’t have to test @PinkSparklyPussyCat. I have to twice a week and more to the point I’m happy to.

Seriously? Hmm

All you have to do is twirl a cotton bud in each nostril, stick it in some liquid and put a few drops on to a testing stick.

I've done one every day this week because I've been mixing with a lot of new people at work and been on crowded public transport most days. It's hardly onerous.

I found it seriously unpleasant. Don't say it's nothing - you might not mind it, but plenty do.

I didn't. I said it was hardly onerous. I'm sorry you find swiping the inside of your nostril seriously unpleasant. You must find life very difficult.

I am not happy about vaccine passports but it is ridiculous of the government to say they will be needed for nightclubs but not other places. Events like weddings, with lots of interconnected groups, are known to be a big problem.

Certainly removing isolation of household contacts of positive cases seems negligent, almost deliberately so.

And the vaccine program has really fizzled out, we are stuck in the 60-70% bracket, which is inadequate.

It's a mess. Again.

I hated it at first, it made me gag and sneeze, but like anything it gets easier and now I don't mind.

Your language isn't helping you I think - you don't 'shove' anything, you carefully swab.

It would perhaps be worth trying to see if you can approach it calmly as your reaction is emotional rather than practical. I accept it is not something joyous!
