How many covid deaths per month is too many?

3000? 4000? 5000? 6000?

At what point would you begin to be uncomfortable with the body count caused by the government policy colloquially known as "living" with covid?

Boris Johnson has been reported as saying that unless 50,000 are going to die he's not changing course.

This number can be expressed as about 238 dead British people every day from September - March inclusive, or 137 deaths per day over a year. Or 416 per day from November - February inclusive.

Is another 50,000 on the covid death toll ok with you?

Or not?

What level of Covid deaths are our Western European neighbours willing to live with?

If lower than our choice, why? They are LESS isolated geographically, so keeping control of infection is harder than for us - but what are their death rates compared with ours over the pandemic, and what death rates are they choosing to tolerate at the moment?

FreshFreesias · 18/10/2021 20:39

How many cancer deaths is too many?
Funny how the Covid cultists never ask that.

iwishiwasafish · 18/10/2021 20:40

About 30k I guess. Roughly equivalent to fly or pollution. Obviously I would rather all of them were less.

I’m expecting that the covid figure would go down over the years, although not sure what my rationale is for that.

Also wondering if covid deaths will in some way offset flu deaths.

And I’m basing that on people who die within the U.K., rather than British people who die somewhere in the world.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 18/10/2021 20:42

I've lost track, when are we now expected to hit 100k cases a day?

I'm just fed up with all the doom mongering going on, Yes covid is not going to help the health service but do we completely close down and trash the economy so we can't afford to treat people or do we do the best we can while we can. Covid is not the only thing that matters. You can't just ignore the effect that measures has on other things

Kendodd · 18/10/2021 20:42

Frankly, and at the risk of being flamed, I think it depends who's dying. I'm willing to accept many, many more deaths of the very elderly than I am teenages. I think covid is just something we have to live with now, so yes, thousands more deaths per year.
What alturnitive would you suggest op?

And as for New Zealand, actually I wish the whole world had acted as decisively, covid could have been extinguished in January 2020, unfortunately world leaders were too crap and their populations to forgiving imo. Hopefully, when the next virus comes some lessons will have been learnt and leaders will act.

TunnelOfGoats · 18/10/2021 20:43

Everyone's got to die of something unfortunately, and 99% of those who do die from/with covid are already very frail or have other life limiting illnesses. Covid is out there now and will be around for ever so the options are completely and permanently lock yourself away, or get on with life

Absolutely. 50% of people now get cancer and that is due to obesity smoking and drinking.

See how enthusiastic they are about losing weight though.

MapleMay11 · 18/10/2021 20:45

@NearlyAlwaysInsane

Am I the only one here who is grateful that I do NOT live in NZ? A bunch of islands that are super-isolated from the rest of the world, which have been even more isolated for more than two years (taking lessons from North Korea?), and where there is no endgame in sight apart from covid magically disappearing from the rest of the world. And good ole Jacinda still beaming for the cameras while her island shitshow continues.
Another one who is grateful. The stories become more farcical by the day.....prostitutes, gang members, excuse after excuse. Entirely predictable unfortunately.
SickAndTiredAgain · 18/10/2021 20:46

To be honest, I have literally no idea how many people die of flu a day in an average winter. So I’m not going to hypothetically pull a number out of the air that would be unacceptable for covid.
I don’t know how many people die in road accidents, I don’t know how many people die of cancer, suicide, or anything else.
Why does no one ever ask “how many suicides are acceptable before we take some serious action?”

It’s not that I don’t care, but it’s not up to me what level is acceptable. And I’m not asked to put a number on other causes, so I won’t put one on this.

Kendodd · 18/10/2021 20:47

And wtf with all the 'British people'? Do they only count if they're British?

AliceinBorderland · 18/10/2021 20:53

@Kendodd

And wtf with all the 'British people'? Do they only count if they're British?
I was going to say that too.

A non British passport holder here doesn't count?!

MercyBooth · 18/10/2021 20:53

@AliceinBorderland The lockdown lovers wernt too bothered about that while the gyms and slimming classes and bra fittings were stopped.

ThirdElephant · 18/10/2021 20:56

Flu deaths are well over 1,500 even on average. Here you go.

How many covid deaths per month is too many?

I agree. Lockdowns are terrible for weight gain in population

You can’t keep increasing risk then except society to close down due to that

AnyFucker · 18/10/2021 21:03

you're a cult member and just about as capable of being reasoned with

Aye

flippertyop · 18/10/2021 21:14

I have a close family member who died from Covid. I agree with pp this is something we have to live with and if the alternative is being locked up - well that's not an alternative is it? We all have to live with it - like cancer or flu. I don't know what else people like you expect everyone to do!

chesirecat99 · 18/10/2021 21:15

I'm not happy about any deaths from COVID, @PrincessNutNuts, but realistically, there isn't much more to be done, other than vaccinating under 18s and giving boosters. Every adult who wants to be vaccinated is vaccinated. 93% of people in England have antibodies from infection or vaccination. Things aren't going to get much better than this. Possibly better treatment. COVID is here to stay.

WandaVision2 · 18/10/2021 21:16

OP, you’re going to really hate me, I have complied with all the rules for the last 18 months and my family and I are now fully vaccinated to ‘protect the vulnerable’.

I now plan to get on with living my life. My family and their well-being is more important to me than that of a stranger and I will not sacrifice my child’s education any further.

Mondaynightnamechange · 18/10/2021 21:28

@72WayTooCool I was going to ask the same question, how do you propose we get it down to 0 OP?

GoldenOmber · 18/10/2021 21:32

how do you propose we get it down to 0 OP?

I believe by being patriotic and having a ‘can do’ attitude?

(or, the OP’s convinced that anyone who disagrees with her must be a Tory supporter/some sort of Little Englander Brexity type, and is trying to speak to us in a language she feels we will understand? Surely not, though.)

BrainBleachNeeded · 18/10/2021 21:32

Had a parent die of it. Also best friend’s husband died of it.

We’ve had a shit 1.5 years. I’m tired. Really really tired. We’re vaccinated, eldest aged 14 is getting vaccinated tomorrow. Im still wearing masks out. I stayed in when needed to (still didn’t help df and he caught it). So if you’re going to get it and die, then it’s unfortunate. But you can take all the precautions, this virus is sneaky.

My younger 2 children are now below average in school. I got told my son is really behind in reading and maths, when he was on target 2 years ago. I want to enjoy my life now. I will not be sacrificing our happiness and my kids education any longer.

Maybe some good old fashioned blitz spirit?
ReeseWitherfork · 18/10/2021 21:43

What would your number be OP?

Not trying to be goady, I'm curious by your train of thought.

kowari · 18/10/2021 21:49

@FreshFreesias

How many cancer deaths is too many? Funny how the Covid cultists never ask that.
Absolutely! How many heart disease deaths are too many? Lung disease? Liver disease?

I think how many years of life have been lost is important too. There is a difference between cutting a life short by a year and a person dying 30 years earlier than they might have.

Dreamstate · 18/10/2021 21:52

I'd say somewhere around the flu numbers is sensible something like 30,000. if covid is more risk in death compared to flu then perhaps 25,000 or just below it to take that into account.

It is what it is and people die of many other illnesses are similar figures and we so not shut down the country for them so 🤷
