Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

@FancySomeChips
When is it ok to stop wearing masks? Covid is here to stay.

Also if you are wearing a mask and I am not, how are you forced to breath my germs?

Public transport it is a requirement still i think but it amazes me that we are allowed to go to concerts and festivals with about 4000 people mixing with no mask requirement but have to wear one on a train.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 03/10/2021 12:50

@FancySomeChips

I think is disgusting that people aren’t wearing masks in shops/public transport.

Just because you don’t care, just because you don’t think you are at risk doesn’t mean the people around you forced to breathe your germs feel the same.

Quite apart from the fact that there are people who were never able to wear masks in the first place, they're not mandatory now. The onus is on you to take extra steps to protect yourself if you're unhappy with the lack of masks. Wear a proper, fitted, medical grade mask with a face shield. Or stay away from places you feel uncomfortable. Those of us unable to wear masks were told repeatedly to stay at home when they were mandatory and I certainly avoided being in situations such busy shops/public transport etc as much as I possibly could. Perhaps avoiding these situations might be an idea for you too, now?

I mostly wear a mask or a visor to protect other people and to make those who are worried to feel less worried - particularly as I still wheeze and cough (Covid in January). I didn't wear one at church this morning as people there know I've had Covid, I've had both vaccinations and I took a Lateral Flow test yesterday (negative - as expected) as I was on the welcome desk today. Also, wearing a mask can make me feel breathless. Wearing a mask gives the wearer some protection but mainly it protects others. If they were useless, surgeons wouldn't wear them. Please. Wear a mask. It's actually not that big a deal.

You've just said you didn't wear one at church, though?

I'm with Whitty & Vallance on the continued mask-wearing, they seem like good company to me.

RonWeasleysWilly · 03/10/2021 13:56

Agree with this. I can't wear masks and avoided all shops from the point they became mandatory. Some may say they're 'no big deal' but they were for me. I really tried but could never manage more than a minute or two. So, to 'do my bit' I avoided all settings where masks were needed. Now it's no longer mandated in England I have ventured into a few (quiet) shops and also got a haircut. It's been nice and I don't appreciate bring guilt tripped by people who have no understanding of how crap it's been.

RonWeasleysWilly · 03/10/2021 14:00

(That was in response to @GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr - thought I had included quote!)

languagelover96 · 03/10/2021 14:02

I'm going to a exercise class this week. Today for the first time in two weeks I drove to church in order to attend a service with a face mask on in case. Earlier this year I went bowling at night once and on a crowded train to London.

As I said, people at our church know I have had Covid, been double jabbed and Lateral Flow tested yesterday. I'm vanishingly unlikely to have the virus or transmit it. And we're still pretty careful not to hug people!

It's not my responsibility to make others feel less worried.

I’ve had Covid, double jabbed and do regular lateral flows. So the same chance of transmitting as you I guess. But I should be wearing a mask in all indoor places just to make people feel better?

So why do you wear a mask in other situations?

I'm double jabbed, had covid pre-jabs last year and again in August. Having had it in January/being jabbed doesn't necessarily mean you don't currently have covid, nor do negative LFTs.

I say all this because this is what I'm often told regarding my own non mask wearing.

And I'm really confused as to why you wear them in settings where people don't know you, but not in ones where they do.

Are you saying that, given you're convinced you don't have and can't transmit Covid, you only wear one for the sake of appearances?

nopuppiesallowed · 03/10/2021 15:35

I normally do wear a mask in church even among people who know me (or a visor if breathing is particularly difficult) even though people know my history. But I had a negative test yesterday and have no symptoms other than the normal (for me) Long Covid wheeze and sporadic cough. I always wear a mask in indoor situations such as shops where I'm likely to be near people - as I don't usually take lateral flow tests - as I don't want to worry people if I start to cough. Also, I know that I may catch Covid again and don't want to infect anyone. In my opinion (not fail safe, agreed, but perfectly rational given all factors mentioned) I didn't feel I was a danger to anyone this morning and no one seemed to feel uncomfortable near(ish) me.

And that’s fine. Your call. But in your first post you told everyone to Please. Wear a mask. It's actually not that big a deal. Why do you feel that you can make your own risk assessment, but others can’t?

I have been in a busy supermarket today and counted eight masks plus my own. I have just recovered from a horrendous dose of covid and i am double jabbed. If i can protect just one person from suffering like i did i will continue to wear a mask. So I shall. What difference does it make to my life, absolutely none.

Just to add though, that I didn’t judge anyone for not wearing one (not sure that came across properly in my post) i’m happy for everyone to make their own choice of course.
Helenmumoftw0 · 03/10/2021 15:55

Iv not been bothered all the way through, I keep my distance from older people, wear a mask in NHS places but other than that iv lived my life as normal as possible throughout. I got sick of the government changing the rules all the time!
Iv always sanitised my hands so that was normal for me anyway.

Helenmumoftw0 · 03/10/2021 15:58

Oh and as I worked for the NHS before my children I know full well a piece of material over my mouth is just going to spread bacteria, and I'm not paying £10 for a pack of 5 surgical masks that need to be changed every 20 minutes to have somewhat of an effect against protecting me from the virus!

Againstmachine · 03/10/2021 16:33

Ah vallance who was at a crowded Wimbledon next to lots of people he wouldn't normally meet.

If People want mitigations, they don't realise these will ruin business and industry.

Remember twice in past two years it was illegal to sit down on a bench or even on the grass. To me that's nothing to do with public health it's obscene, to have a excuse to leave home is obscene.

I don't understand how people can see what happened over the past 18 months including three awful peaks of cases and the resulting deaths & impact on hospitals, and still maintain no restrictions were necessary.

No one is suggesting such measures for the Winter, but low-level things like mask wearing are what could prevent this from turning into another situation where damaging restrictions like lockdown and reduced capacity in shops/hospitality are needed.

Not sure what this has to do with anything? He didn't break any guidelines to go to Wimbledon.

Why should he have to live like a hermit in order to advice on policies like mask wearing?

I assume it’s the fact that he didn’t wear a mask at Wimbledon, while surrounded by strangers. So he obviously doesn’t think they’re that important.

Exactly I forgot to put that on but by same token no he shouldn't live like a hermit but come on.
