Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

i just you watch this.

I’ve been jabbed, everyone i know has been jabbed.

Those who dont want to be jabbed, fair enough, but im not wearing a mask for you.

And as for those who can’t be jabbed, sorry, but i wore a mask for two years for you, no more.

And finally, if i get it, i get it. If i die, i die. I doubt a mask would stop it anyway, not a popular view but as i’ve read scientific journals prior to the mask mandate, that are now, not available, mask efficacy when it’s used regularly, never cleaned, not fitted properly, contaminated already by a covid infectious person (not necessarily the wearer) is pretty much in the low teens. So really, whats the point.

So nope, not wearing a mask. If a shop mandates it, i don’t go in. If a shops asks nicely, i might if it’s a confined space.

Forgot to bold your name Talktalkchat
Do you have difficulty with statistics ? - 1 in 20,000 is not high, and as I said, it is the same as your annual risk of dying in an RTA. I take it you never travel by car / bus / coach / van?

KeepScrapingBy · 02/10/2021 16:26

Pretty much mask free now. I kept wearing mine to the end of July though so I‘be gone above and beyond. Wore it some of the time in August then ditched it in September. I’ve not thrown it away in case I have that rare beast a doctors appointment!
Carrying on as normal. Don’t sanitize but wash hands regularly as I always have done. Don’t wipe trolleys. But I do keep my distance from other people whenever possible.
Went to the theatre 2 weeks ago, masks preferred according to website but when I got there hardly anyone was wearing them! Full house with audience cheering all the way through. Was fabulous and like normal!

ilovesooty · 02/10/2021 16:30

I went to the theatre a couple of weeks ago. Virtually everyone was unmasked but since it was largely an older audience (production not suitable for children anyway) I can't say that the lack of masks bothered me much.

@Chris08 - DH is a doctor- he worked on Covid wards. Of course the tv coverage was real. Do you not believe that Covid happened and killed thousands?

SallyWD · 02/10/2021 17:09

I wear masks in shops, indoor places, trains and buses. I notice most people don't but I feel I should. There are several pupils in my children's classes with Covid. I could well have Covid and pass it to someone vulnerable who then dies. When I think about it like that, wearing a mask is a small inconvenience really.

People who say life needs to get back to normal, I wonder what it is you think you cannot do while wearing a mask for that little bit of extra protection for people around you?

Apart from snog someone, obvs ...

Masks make communication much more difficult. Have you not noticed how you have to speak loudly and lean closer to be understood which defeats the point of a cloth over your mouth.

It takes the enjoyment out of doing anything and is a hassle that I prefer not to bother with but hey I am sure all the businesses that suffered during the mandatory restrictions could just keep on sucking up loss of earnings if restrictions were still enforced. Fortunately they aren't in England and people can choose not to use them if they feel it is too risky to be around people who are umasked.

I am loving seeing pubs and restaurants busier now we don't have the performance of putting on a mask simply to walk to table before eating indoors for a few hours.

Because it's no longer law in England to wear a mask, and wearing a mask isn't going back to normal in any way or form.

And to be honest it's upto other people to protect theirselves.

ilovesooty · 02/10/2021 18:03

it's up to other people to protect themselves

Is this a precursor to if you want to live in fear, stay at home while we crack on?

Againstmachine · 02/10/2021 18:12

Nope it's just, you can't expect people to do this forever and covid is with us forever

I’ve no idea what I can’t do wearing a mask apart from what you said. I just cannot be bothered to put one on again.
ilovesooty · 02/10/2021 18:18

Covid is certainly with us forever, I agree. However where I don't completely agree was in leaving mitigating measures up to people's choice prior to winter when numbers may well rise again.

Againstmachine · 02/10/2021 18:43

Cases rose last winter despite lots of measures including masks, only being able to eat in pubs ect being in place.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/10/2021 18:49

I was never really bothered. Stopped wearing a mask as soon as we were allowed to.

The vaccination programme wasn't established then.

Very true, although we didn't have the vaccine back then. We have to hope that the vaccine helps us out this winter.
Againstmachine · 02/10/2021 18:57

The vaccination programme wasn't established then.

Well if that's working, we don't need mitigations.

The vaccination plays an important part. It's not the only thing though. Mitigating measures are important too.
Againstmachine · 02/10/2021 19:12

As said many times you do your own mitigations, it's no one's job to protect anyone else, and before anyone starts with society, society didn't give a shit about most peoples health before this.

wintertravel1980 · 02/10/2021 19:27

Mitigating measures are important too.

No, not really. Here is a long thread but it explains why in the endemic (stable) state the most important factor is the overall level of immunity. NPIs only slightly move the needle. Any temporary controls are pretty much useless:

We've tried to return to as normal as possible but I'm still wearing my mask inside public places, still using sanitiser, still washing my hands regularly, still bathing my kids and washing their clothes after school. I'm double jabbed but I know a few people at the moment who are double jabbed and got covid. I don't want to take risks when I don't have to but i am also starting to take my children places like swimming because I don't want them missing anything else.
