Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

Mummadeze
I’m just doing what I feel comfortable with. I’m not criticising those who don’t want to wear a mask and I don’t expect to be criticised or challenged for wanting to one.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 01/10/2021 20:53

What kind of damage do you think they may have done? I have an 18 month old so I'm genuinely curious 🤔

Chillychangchoo · 01/10/2021 20:53

How can we go from social distancing and masks I hear you say… to normality?

Quite easily actually. People could never maintain that, they never have done with other pandemics and people are just bored of covid now.

We got an email from the school advising us our son has been a close contact with a confirmed case of covid and that the LA has requested we PCR him. Turns out the whole class got the same email. Asked about five other mothers at pick up were they intending to PCR their kids and they all said not a chance.

I was never intending to test my son with no symptoms but I just wanted to gauge what others were doing, and it seems I’m not alone.

@Testarossa44

My beloved dad passed away very suddenly on Monday from a blood clot caused by covid. It’s still out there, it’s an evil disease.
Flowersi am sorry for your loss.
HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 01/10/2021 20:57

I think lots of people are. I will say I am surprised when I hear people are washing their shopping still or are still locking themselves away but are perfectly healthy and do not have vulnerable family members. But they are free to do as they wish and will respect their decision.

You would have thought I had caught the bubonic plague when I tested positive for covid by the way some of my family members reacted. They were rather suprised that at 27 years old and good health that I was able to "beat it" ffs Hmm Madness.

Stuffin · 01/10/2021 20:58

Everyone knows it is personal choice in England yet people still want to enforce mask wearing and social distancing on others.

I also don't understand why those that want to wear masks feel self conscious and want others to wear one simply so that they don't feel the odd one out. If you want to wear one then own it and do it.

If you want social distancing indoors then you will need to limit what you want to do because for most businesses it doesn't pay to enforce it and thus most are happy to get back to normal.

There it all these well I'm not going out at moment to restaurants cinemas ,bars. Ect expect them to still be there when they decide to go out.

It is people going our who are keeping these places open not you, so you need to be thankful.

Chris08 · 01/10/2021 21:06

Not an expert just stating a fact which you can check

GlomOfNit · 01/10/2021 21:10

I'm bothered by it, but taking slightly more risks because of the local vaccination rates. But yes, definitely still aware, taking care and concerned about how it'll be once we inevitably get it from one of our two children at school.

I continue to wear a mask in shops, on the few buses or trains I take and in the baby drop-in centre I volunteer at. Wearing a mask doesn't remotely bother me and it doesn't get in the way. I do have the occasional coffee at an inside cafe but avoid busy times and don't do that a lot. Some people will sneer that I'm still taking that risk so why not just get 'back to normal' but I see it as taking fewer risks.

Why? Because this thing is still with us and still killing. Because my elderly and not-healthy mum is terrified of getting it despite being double-jabbed, and I'd like us to be able to see her sometimes. Because two good friends are ECV, and I'd like to continue to be able to see them too. It's been less than two years and pandemics tend to run their course in around two years. I'm fairly sure things will be different next year.

@Chris08

Have you never had a virus before? It makes you feel shit, then you get over it with added immunity.
Yeah sure, my OH and I both had covid. We both felt shit, I've now got severe asthma and long covid. My OH developed pneumonia, ended up on a ventilator and died.
Bertiebiscuit · 01/10/2021 21:20

People have become ludicrously disconnected-here in East London nobody much wears a mask in shops or on public transport - reckless behaviour, the virus an still kill us - I'm wearing medical grade masks in shops and on public transport keeping away from people especially those without masks, and being outside when I socialise - I can't understand why most people seem not to care anymore - yes life goes on - I've been out a lot, to bars, restaurants, to museums and art galleries, but obeying these rules and doing home testing at least twice a week - this seems pretty much like normal life to me compared to lockdown - stop being drama queen's people, a mask won't kill you

LimitIsUp · 01/10/2021 21:44

@Mummadeze

Sorry, I hate to sound insensitive to those who have been affected badly by Covid, but I can’t find it within me to keep worrying about catching it. Firstly, I’ve had it already. Secondly, I had another horrible virus recently that was just as bad. And I have had both vaccines. But I now just want to live as normally as I can without even thinking about being ill. I just can’t sustain that level of worry ongoing forever.

Autumngoldleaf · 01/10/2021 21:56

I understand the bored of covid etc but what I find odd is the total dropping of the ball now right before winter!

Autumngoldleaf · 01/10/2021 21:58

Don't people think that as vaccines are waning, flu and other resp illness could hit that this could be the worst winter we have ever known on the NHS?
So why drop the ball at this moment?
I feel myself next spring, March.. Bury it then because scientists will have learned so much more this winter, vaccines tweaked, game changers produced... But surley... Hold of for one more winter?

@XenoBitch

Life has to go on at some point. That point is now.
This!

@caspersmagicaljourney I'm so sorry.

caspersmagicaljourney · 01/10/2021 22:13

Thank you. I didn't really want to post that but highlights that the virus can have serious consequences for some people.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 01/10/2021 22:17

Which extremely dangerous pandemics are you referring to when you say people didn’t maintain social distances and mask wearing? Would it be the 1918 Spanish Flu virus with 50 million deaths or the Asian Flu in 1957 which killed 1.5 Million deaths. The other 2 pandemics in 1968 and 2009 were not that dangerous. They killed comparatively few people!

So far Covid has killed just short of 5 million and it’s not over yet. At any time there could be a new variant that is more virulent. Let’s just ditch the masks and social distancing though eh? It’s such a nuisance!

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 22:32

What rules are you obeying, there is no rules to home test or wear masks in England. It's more being a drama queen complaining people not obeying your rules.

TableFlowerss · 01/10/2021 22:47

@Thisisconfusing

The problem is our cases are still pretty high for it to be normal - almost 1000 people are dying a week from it and I think 1000 kids a month are currently being hospitalised not that the BBC ever mentions that ! . I believe 8 children died in sept in the U.K. ONS data indicates the chances of kids getting long Covid is 7-14% depending on age. I have seen the damage done by Long Covid - a previously fit 17yo should be able to go up the stairs without getting out of breath . However it’s seems the vast majority believe that Covid is over and has now become an unstoppable train. Personally I would be very happy to wear a mask if it stopped even one family from being bereaved . It’s not that hard.
*and I think 1000 kids a month are currently being hospitalised not that the BBC ever mentions that ! . I believe 8 children died in sept in the U.K*

You can’t post stuff like this on the back of an ‘I think….’

Where is the evidence that 1000 children a month are currently being hospitalised??

Hopeisamyth · 01/10/2021 22:52

It's still very much around. Both my daughter and son in law caught covid 2 weeks ago one after the other,it floored them both. Racking cough, temperature, pounding headache, the works. Both had to take to their beds.Still not up to par yet.2 out of the 3 kids were unwell too but didn't test positive for covid although it was difficult to do the test properly on them so could easily have been positive.They all have had to isolate for 3weeks altogether.

Hopeisamyth · 01/10/2021 22:55

Sorry meant they caught it over 3weeks ago. 😏🙄

Wellbythebloodyhell · 01/10/2021 23:05

*Chris08

Have you never had a virus before? It makes you feel shit, then you get over it with added immunity.

Unless you die or develop long-term disabilities.*

For the vast vast majority, getting over the virus and moving on is proven to be the most likely outcome after covid infection. This is not the first circulating virus that has had the unfortunate lasting effect of long term health issues or even death in some cases, and its not going to be the last either. Viruses can do, and always have have done, have the ability to kill or seriously harm a tiny percentage of those it infects, this is not a new concept of a transmissible virus, its always been this way.

conjourbonjour · 01/10/2021 23:13

Never been worried, not vaccinated as I’m 8.5 months pregnant but will get vaccine after. I’m sick to death of it all, I never wore a mask when it was the “law” either as it’s bull. One minute government say masks don’t help and next minute it’s the law. Get on with your life OP, you could get run over tomorrow, have you stopped crossing roads?
