'No reason to think Covid will become more virulent’/'It could be like common cold by Spring'

Some positive news from people who know what they're talking about this morning.

As far as the common cold claim is concerned, there was the caveat that we have to get through winter first (wouldn't fit on my screenshot but that's all that it said, no predictions of catastrophe or anything).

Yes I know there are still vulnerable people whom covid could affect badly (I'm one of them), but this is good news. Although I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me it's not Grin

It's probably bad form to look but it took seconds to find the actual quote-

With permanent WFH, those currently living in squalor would be able to move elsewhere where they can afford somewhere nicer

TheKeatingFive · 24/09/2021 09:38

Oh it was living in ‘squalor’ not ‘shitholes’

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/09/2021 09:40

@TheKeatingFive

I mean, I'm not surprised, but is this for real?

Yup. Was the word ‘shithole’ used? Something highly offensive like that.

But sure, educating 🙄

It was squalor. Those of us living in squalor (I am one of the poor souls) can buy somewhere nicer with the money we save through working from home.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/09/2021 09:41

Cross post Sparklingbrook.

I quite like my squalid little flat to be honest and my £40 a month petrol saving won't go far!

Sparklingbrook · 24/09/2021 09:44

Same difference but 'squalor' is so much more dramatic you see. A 'shithole' could just indicate a bit of untidiness. 'Squalor' is downright filthy/dirty/absolutely disgusting, with cockroaches and rats, running with condensation and mould. In the worst area you could possibly imagine with loads of crime. The works.

They could move to a new build in a gated community maybe or a huge country pile if only they WFH. Genius.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/09/2021 09:51

Well according to another thread I'm risking weils disease and god knows what else as I don't wash my shopping before I put it away so maybe squalor is the right word!

I saw that 😆

I also blow out candles on birthday cakes which is disgustingly unhygienic apparently.

God bless MN for making me feel like a walking miracle.

You are beyond redemption clearly! Grin Because presumably you never wash your hands, ever either.

Re the food washing though, nobody was ever advised to do it, I am amazed people still are. All the 'quarantining' stuff sort of made sense in April 2020 when little was known but not now.

TheKeatingFive · 24/09/2021 09:54

In my city centre squalor.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 24/09/2021 10:01

Squalor indeed.

Yep, saving £50pm for 18 months on DH's fares is sure to lift us out of 'squalor' and able buy somewhere nicer. (Btw my 2 bed council flat may be small but it's in a lovely leafy area with nice neighbours, a proper community, repairs and modernisation included in the rent. Squalor it ain't.)

So we can add classism to sexism and general offensiveness, then?

@PrincessNutNuts please tell me how this is educational?

With my very low standards I'm surprised I've made it to 46!

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 24/09/2021 10:06

Oh and no way would a Corbyn devotee (which N&J purports to be) talk of 'squalor' in such sneery terms. Nor would they be happy to outsource their perceived risk from covid to those in precarious, poorly paid zero hour contract employment/work in crowded fulfilment centres with no SD or ventilation, so they can protect themselves. Particularly when there's no CEV members of their household.

Something isn't right here.

Where are all these charming, spacious properties in the country supposed to come from I wonder?

There are so many of us here in squalor in the city, longing for Nanny’s rural idyll.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/09/2021 10:10

We thought about moving but I'm really not cut out for countryside living (DH calls me Margot) and I don't want to end up with a big mortgage to move in the area we are now. Squalor it is then!

Stasiland · 24/09/2021 10:11

Give it a bloody rest.

DottyHarmer · 24/09/2021 10:17

I always read “doom” posts as I am very superstitious and almost daren’t hope for good times.

BUT there is a world of difference between cautious graphs etc and the tone of unbridled glee in some posts. That I find just horrible. And the culprits can’t deny it - liberal exclamation marks whenever there’s some bad news.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 24/09/2021 10:17

@Sparklingbrook

Definitely *@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr*, just the word 'optimistic' is good to see.

Maybe it's time to split the Coronavirus board up and have some sub topics?

As I said upthread hopefully soon there won't be any need for one at all! Oh for the day when Covid is just another topic covered on the GH topic. And all the nastiness on this one is consigned to history.

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr can’t come soon enough!

Sparklingbrook · 24/09/2021 10:20

When the Coronavirus topic is tumbleweed I think we can say it is well and truly over, i am 'cautiously optimistic' it's not too far away.

DottyHarmer · 24/09/2021 10:22

My hill to die on is posters claiming online experience is better all round, particularly for young people. I am still Angry at the tinpot HE poster claiming that online was for the benefit of disabled students. The very nerve of using disabled students for personal purposes…. As if disabled students are on so very happy to be stuck in their bedrooms and don’t want to participate in university life like anyone else Angry .

Like pound shop Eric Dings
Stasiland · 24/09/2021 10:40

I get people want it to be over. But the fact is for people who will need NHS care now and in the near future it sadly isn't and won't be for a good many years. Fine if you are young and well, yes it will seem like it's over and any concerns are just doom and gloom. If you suddenly discover you are not as well as you thought, you'll soon find that covid is having a huge impact on your medical management, investigations, quality of life. When you find that because of covid backlog your appointment for lung function tests is in march 22 you may not be as dismissive of peoples' fears and gleefully mocking them. Some sadly live in a bubble and can't see anything beyond their own nose and experience.
No problem with being optimistic but equally no problem being with cautious.

Bordois · 24/09/2021 10:47

Nice strawman there Stasiland.

GoldenOmber · 24/09/2021 10:48

Wait, blowing our birthday candles is bad now? What are other people doing with birthday candles? Make a wish and then throw a bucket of water over the cake?

herecomesthsun · 24/09/2021 10:50

we had birthday candles at home and sparklers when we had a little birthday party elsewhere

the kids like sparklers so it was still jolly
