They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

Masks don't prevent lockdowns at all.

I have a very fulfilled life thank you very much!

If that is the case, it is odd that you have so much time to spend berating others on the coronavirus board. I would think you will soon reach 1,000 comments on this topic alone.

Because I'm not constantly trying to police others on their personal choices.

And yet you do."

Nope. I don't. I am super fast I'm like a superhero!

herecomesthsun · 17/09/2021 12:45

@Againstmachine

We wear masks partly to avoid another lockdown.

They didn't prevent last 2 lockdowns at all.

We didn't have compulsory masks before the 1st lockdown (it depends how you count the lockdowns a bit I suppose)

Also see the seatbelt analogy (seatbelts don't prevent crashes and might not prevent injury as much as airbags but they help enough to be worth having)

it's funny, I used to think there were TONS of anti-maskers on MN, until I started paying attention to usernames and realised it was mostly one poster (plus a few others dotted around) just wanging on and on and on with non-scientific dross. Such a bore."

Completely untrue. Loads of posters dont want them back, oh nice try with labelling us as 'anti-maskers'. I'm actually called a 'free facer".

Searbelts don't make it hard to breathe or have a conversation. So the analogy is useless.

Seatbelts can be uncomfortable though?

and most people wouldn't choose to tie hard material round their body off their own bat?

many of the same arguments were used when seatbelts first came in

liberty/ choice/ uncomfortable/ we're English and won't be told what to do etc

Also masks don't actually make it hard to breathe (speaking as someone with a lung condition) when just going about normal business like shopping.

Still waiting to hear about your qualifications to diagnose the presentation of neurosis, @Peteycat.

And there I was thinking a mask was a just few layers of paper designed to protect me and others in a pandemic. But no, OMG, it's a TOOL TO CONTROL THE MASSES and here's a free-facer to show us the way to freedom!

Note: that was nonsense

herecomesthsun · 17/09/2021 13:20

@AlixandraTheGreat are you sure you don't have a superpower Wink

I agree. It is just a few layers of paper. Hence why I think it's ridiculous. I don't think it's a tool to control the masses.

Oh right, er well I ignored it because I'm not going to share my qualifications with you on an anonymous site am I? I mean I could, but how would you know if I was telling the truth?

marieantoinehairnet · 17/09/2021 13:22

I find it really hard to see how people can get so affronted but the prospect of wearing a mask in the right situation.

It's like blowing your nose in the right situation. Wearing wellies in the right situation. Wearing a hazmat suit in the right situation. Rubber gloves in the right situation...

herecomesthsun · 17/09/2021 13:22

If just a bit of paper, then no big deal to wear one occasionally?

If you had any knowledge about mental health you would know you can't make diagnoses of random posters you have never seen?

So I don't think we are missing much here.

Speak for yourself, I have a severe lung condition and it does make it hard to breathe. I can manage if I am sat down or for a few minutes moving around and after that I'm fucked.

If you had qualifications in mental health diagnosis I'm sure you'd say so. I'm going to assume that you don't have, and any identification of neurosis in other posters represents a personal attack and a breach of MN talk guidelines.

Ok, I can respect that it affects different people with different severe lung conditions differently (and it sounds as though you are well entitled to have been exempt from wearing one anyway)
FourTeaFallOut · 17/09/2021 13:28

It's hard enough having to live with a lung condition in a pandemic when you are getting the stink eye for coughing and not being able to wear a mask without having other people suggest that people like me are making it up. Fuck you.

Peteycat · 17/09/2021 13:28

"If you had any knowledge about mental health you would know you can't make diagnoses of random posters you have never seen?

Hmm, you seem to think everyone with a lung condition can breathe in a mask fine....

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 17/09/2021 13:29

@marieantoinehairnet why so rude? On pretty much every mask thread. I've seen mask exempt people on the receiving end of your ire, too.

Perhaps just accept that not everyone feels the same way about stuff as you do. Debate is one thing, telling people they need to get out more in response to your ageism and questioning whether people have a life outside MN is just unnecessary.

Incredible to see that a year and a half on mask threads still get so heated. Or that they're even a thing at all, still.

I have never once said anything about those who are exempt, if you are exempt I wouldn't ever expect anyone to wear a mask.

I'm talking about general compliance, for those that can, to a social etiquette that may save lives.

Talk about wrong end of the stick.

I'm sorry you are not in a good place right now. No one is suggesting you are making anything up though.

It's like blowing your nose in the right situation. Wearing wellies in the right situation. Wearing a hazmat suit in the right situation. Rubber gloves in the right situation...

And that's your opinion. Just because you feel it's the right situation for you, it's not for everyone. Just like you could act on stage in the right situation. Sing in a choir in the right situation. Make a public speech in the right situation. Not everyone can do that. The thing is, you don't have to blow your nose in the right situation, you don't have to wear wellies in the right situation, you dont have to wear rubber gloves in the right situation, and I've never ever wore a hazmat suit in any situation. So, therefore, you don't have to wear a face mask in the right situation because that's what the law says. (Unless like me you are in Scotland, then it really sucks)
