If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

Dya know what, I've had so many sore throats since you don't have to wear a mask anymore. I don't know if it's just coincidence or if it's down to less mask wearing.
I wear one in the shops and busy places and I don't feel silly at all wearing one.

emmathedilemma · 07/09/2021 13:04

I was in England recently but live in Scotland and it felt weirder not to wear one in the couple of places I didn't (like walking through a cafe to sit outside). Definitely didn't feel uncomfortable wearing it in the supermarket or on public transport.

I'd be interested to know how recently. I'd agree 2 weeks ago but this weekend masks seem to have disappeared.

Most people still wearing them in supermarkets etc where I am.

SinkingSwim · 07/09/2021 13:08

No, I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant and feel that I'm doing what I can to keep myself and my baby safe.

BoomChicka · 07/09/2021 13:08

Do whatever YOU want to do and stop being so influenced by what other people think, or what you think they think. Wear one if you want, or bin them.

ChipsAreLife · 07/09/2021 13:08

People still wearing them where I am. I really wouldn't worry about feeling silly or causing a five second delay!

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/09/2021 13:09

Lots of people are still wearing them, including me don't feel daft at all.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 13:10

I didn't wear one for the first time on Saturday, have a horrible bug . I'll be wearing them as usual! Everyone in our Tescos and Aldi's wear them as they're asked to .

IndigoC · 07/09/2021 13:11

Don’t give a crap what people think. Better to be safe with 1000 people a day being admitted to hospital still.

MareofBeasttown · 07/09/2021 13:11

I still wear one and feel comfortable doing so. I live in Central London and it's busy everywhere I go. I also take public transport. I haven't noticed any huffy glances but then I don't really care that much about what people think of me in a pandemic. I did notice a couple of teen girls say something cheeky, but meh. I am going to do what I think best for me. DS is 17 and wears a mask too.

Deletesystem33 · 07/09/2021 13:11

I'm on Scotland, most people are still wearing them in public. So no I don't.

SirChenjins · 07/09/2021 13:13

Ditto - Scotland here so I still wear one, along with most other people.

Innocenta · 07/09/2021 13:13

I'm CEV, so I wore masks in high risk situations before Covid. It isn't a big deal and I don't know why people make so much fuss, tbh.

notacooldad · 07/09/2021 13:16

Yes I do have an opinion. I think if it helps people feel a little bit safer or gives them some confidence to go out then it's worth it.
I haven't got the energy, patience or inclination action to judge mask wearers because I dont know their story or circumstances.

Kittii · 07/09/2021 13:17

I think anyone who judges someone for wearing a mask is silly. Not people trying to protect themselves and others during a pandemic.

I care so much less about what other people think of me these days. It's very freeing. One of the few perks of getting older. I think also having been through traumatic experiences (near death of DC, having cancer myself) means I just don't sweat the small stuff any more. I mean, really, what does it matter if some random in a supermarket queue looks at you a bit funny? Whereas not wearing a mask could expose me and my family to an unpredictable virus.

nordica · 07/09/2021 13:18

I really don't care what anyone thinks of me wearing one. I wear FFP2 ones that actually protect me as well, and will continue doing so in shops and public transport through the autumn/winter season at least.

Dancingalong · 07/09/2021 13:19

I don’t always wear one, but I don’t judge anyone who does. Do what you’re comfortable with.

ChaToilLeam · 07/09/2021 13:19

No, where I live they are still required in enclosed public spaces, and when I was recently in Scotland people were mostly following that too.

I know a number of people who have contracted Covid despite being double jabbed. None of them were seriously ill but they felt shit and I’d rather avoid that if I can.

Mintjulia · 07/09/2021 13:21

No, not in the slightest.

Most people on the train in the morning are still wearing them, about a 90:10 split. It's common sense while there are still relatively high levels of infection around.

Stellaris22 · 07/09/2021 13:21

I have horrible cough variant asthma and it's been so amazing since masks were introduced, so no, I don't feel silly wearing mine.

I normally get a hacking cough 3-4 times a year that lasts a month (meaning pain and no sleep), but I've not had it at all since mask wearing.

I don't care if I look silly, I'll be wearing mine forever now as my health is more important than nasty comments.

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/09/2021 13:22

I really don't care what anyone thinks. Yes I still wear a mask, and I think the people who don't are a bit stupid, tbh. (Obviously some are exempt but I can't know that from looking at them.)

It's about 50/50 round here now. I'm fully aware I'm going to get Covid eventually, but I would rather reduce the viral load and protect others in case I have it.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/09/2021 13:23

It's a lot easier in London as they're compulsory on public transport

Nojobforoldmums · 07/09/2021 13:23

I got weird looks and mutterings for wearing one down my local shop.

I had no concerns about getting covid.

I had just finished my isolation from testing positive and there was still an active case in my house, it was an extra precaution for everyone else!

BigThumb · 07/09/2021 13:23

I still wear mine and don’t feel daft. But I’m going to be stopping wearing mine because without fail at some point while I have my mask on, someone will look at me and my mask, walk closer to me and cough at me and then watch for my reaction. I live in an area where people are quite anti mask so while I thought I was imagining it at first and thinking it was me just noticing people coughing because I was nervous, the looking before and after and the exaggerated coughs have made me certain it’s people being dicks. It’s giving me far more anxiety and fear being coughed at than the thought of not wearing one now so I’m giving in to it.
