If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

We went to the same children’s cafe we’ve been going to for months but i forgot my mask, we’ve now all had v/d bug and horrible colds.
Yes, probably coincidence, and yes, masks protect others from covid and not yourself but it confirmed I’m more comfortable wearing them. I don’t care what others think at all.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/09/2021 14:51

I live in Scotland so I am legally required to wear one in many circumstances.

So no I don't feel daft in the slightest.

I don't enjoy wearing one and look forward to no longer having to.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 07/09/2021 14:52

I still wear one and a majority of people in my area are still wearing them. I also think they help to reduce infections - not just covid, but flu and colds, too. So no, I don't feel daft.

I do wash mine every time I wear it though.

Siouxtse1 · 07/09/2021 14:54

I still wear a mask. I think because I've reduced contact with people and places for so long, my immune system isn't going to be as strong as it once was. If I got ill previously, it could be dicey for my blood sugars (Type 1 diabetic), so it's in my interests to protect myself from other people's germs (be it cold/'flu/covid/whatever).
It must be the same for most people through- if you aren't exposed to germs, you're body doesn't even get the opportunity to build up immunity*, so I think a slow relaxation will have to happen to help rebuild immune systems as and when people feel more comfortable with this. So I'm helping others by not exposing them to as many of whatever germs I have at the moment for now, but eventually, we'll have to get re-introduced or when one person gets a cold, everyone will get it.....

  • NB I'm not using this argument as a reason to not get a vaccine, that's down to individual choice.

Very much looking forward to my holiday in England in a few weeks where I can go wherever I like without a mask or the lanyard of shame.

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask. I really couldn't give a shit either way.

The problem is the judgy, superior attitudes of people who think they're just the best human beings ever because they're wearing TWO masks or a FULL HAZMAT SUIT around Tesco. And that conversely, people who are not wearing masks (even though there is no legal obligation to do so) are uncaring, selfish bastards who are wilfully trying to kill the vulnerable and the saintly NHS staff.

Just stop paying so much attention to what everyone else is or is not doing.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 07/09/2021 14:55

I was in a Sainsburys this morning, there were maybe half a dozen people not wearing a mask...everyone else was.
I don't mind, even though it was quite hot and I was melting. I'm vaccinated and cautious, and haven't had "it" yet, so will continue wearing it...I'd feel a bit naked without it now. Blush Grin

EvilPea · 07/09/2021 14:55

No. I don’t feel silly

NatashaRf · 07/09/2021 14:56

More people than not are wearing them in shops here still (London)

NewlyGranny · 07/09/2021 14:57

Still wearing mine. We're in a spiking hotspot where I live so no way am I stopping!

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 07/09/2021 14:58

it is noticeable where we are that by far the majority of people over about 50 are wearing them and almost no one under about 40 is

That’s interesting, Mydog. I wonder if the old belief in acting for the common good has died out? Masks protect other people more than the wearers. When we were young, people expected to have to follow the rules to protect other people, but that also meant other people were protecting us.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/09/2021 14:58

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

I've made a decision to limit my chances of being a vector for infection (flu, Covid, RSV) for other people in both a professional and 'rest of my life' setting. I also wash my hands to limit my chances of passing on infections in that way.

I'm comfortable with my choices.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/09/2021 14:58

I still wear mine. Haven't noticed anyone judging me.

TheBullfinch · 07/09/2021 15:00

Yes, Ive noticed its only older people who wear them now (I include myself in this) mainly in shops and have been thinking of ditching them completely. I was in London a few weeks ago and nobody seemed to be wearing them there, even on the Tube or on trains.

Peace43 · 07/09/2021 15:01

I'm in Wales, still compulsory in shops here. I'm still wearing mine and don't feel silly. I went for dinner in England and didn't wear one and felt naked!! :)

moynomore · 07/09/2021 15:03

I'm swearing a mama and wish others would have the courtesy to do so as well. I'm judging the non-wearers much more (and yes, I know some people are exempt).

TrueGrit54 · 07/09/2021 15:03

I am still wearing mine but I totally get what you mean. I was wondering the same thing in the supermarket earlier. I think it’s about 50/50 where I live, more and more people have stopped wearing them. My friend and her DD 15 are recovering from covid, my friend is ok as she was double jabbed but daughter is day 6 of flu symptoms and feels dreadful. I am going to continue with hand washing and mask wearing, my family are all asthmatics.

Popcornbetty · 07/09/2021 15:05

I'm still wearing them (England) and it pisses me right off that so many people are not - I'm doing my best to protect others and they're not giving me the same consideration.

Was in Lidl this morning and I'd say 20% mask wearing.Whenwe go back into some sort of lockdown, it'll be precisely because Johnson, once again, couldn't summon the courage to make people do a small thing (and it helps encourage people to remember we're still under pandemic conditions).*

Yes this exactly^

Flatdisco · 07/09/2021 15:06

It's literally no bother to wear one. So why would I feel daft?

adeleh · 07/09/2021 15:07

I'm still wearing one. To me it's no huge inconvenience and if it helps with managing Covid then I'll happily carry on wearing one. And I too have noticed that I haven't had any horrible stinking colds since the start of the pandemic. I'd normally have had at least two by now.

Popcornbetty · 07/09/2021 15:07

Agree i judge non wearers too unless exempt.

Boofay · 07/09/2021 15:07

People can give me funny looks all they like, I don't care. I'm still wearing a mask in shops, on public transport, in hospitality and any enclosed space. We're still wearing them in the playground too.
I'm in Wales so mask wearing is still more of a thing here than in England, but even if our restrictions had been relaxed as much as England's, I'd still happily do all the above.

Again, not just trying to give myself a little protection but thinking of others too.

StillWalking · 07/09/2021 15:08

Large majority of folks in the supermarkets round here (East Midlands) are still wearing masks. I am still wearing mine and don't feel ready to stop yet.

We had 40k cases yesterday ..... that's enough of an argument to convince me.

NotMyCat · 07/09/2021 15:08

Still wearing one to protect myself as I can't rely on others wearing masks now

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 07/09/2021 15:12

I’m not bothered what other people think. If I feel I need to wear one I will and if I don’t I won’t

Laiste · 07/09/2021 15:14

Rural midlands and it's 50/50 in the Tesco in the little market town near me with an aging population but about only 20% wearing them in the bigger town further down with more mixed gen customers.

No one wears masks on the school run any more in our village. Waiting in the queue or walking in the playground thank god.

Emails from the school about it were wishy washy, but Head master was out there at the gate on Friday at pick up greeting everyone heartily without his mask for the first time in 18 months - a signal for the parents, i think.
