If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

I don’t care what people think. I’m still wearing a face covering and am about to switch to FFP2 to protect myself. I’m hopefully going to Portugal shortly and I don’t want my trip scuppered.

Think they're pretty pointless myself, if a mask can't stop a fart it's not going to stop coronavirus.

You don’t seriously think this is in any way a scientifically sound argument do you?

bamboocat · 07/09/2021 13:52

The majority of people are still wearing them in shops and petrol stations etc round here (including many staff) so no, I don't feel in the slightest bit daft. Why would I? Even if I were the only one who felt the need to continue, I still wouldn't be embarrassed by it.

Bringmemoonshine · 07/09/2021 13:52

No. Just got back from the supermarket and I and most others still wearing them. Our local shops are asking people to carry on wearing them. Frankly I don’t care what other people think.

Stormyequine · 07/09/2021 13:52

I feel uncomfortable whether I wear a mask or not at the moment, as either way it feels like people are going to judge. I can't wait for a time when people can just get on with their lives without everyone obsessing about mask wearing!

blobby10 · 07/09/2021 13:55

We visited London on Sunday and travelled four stops on the tube - I wore a mask (horribly hot and stuffy) and was definitely in the minority. Didn't feel silly though

VaguelyInteresting · 07/09/2021 13:55

Yeah I’m still wearing it in most indoor places. Took it off at the hairdresser the other day- it was just the two of us- and I’m not yet eating indoors but putting mask on if I have to go to the loo, unless it’s clearly a very well ventilated cafe (eg fully open on one side).

Ventilation being more highly prioritised by businesses and on transport would probably be the thing that would see me ditch it tbh, but I’m not seeing that happening so I’ll keep it on probably through to next spring.

I’m very much in a very small minority where I live though

MrsScrubbithatescleaning · 07/09/2021 13:56

It’s still mandatory here in Ireland to wear face masks indoors.

No, I don’t feel remotely silly and will continue to wear face masks indoors in public places during the winter months for ever more.

HTH?

Shallwegoforawalk · 07/09/2021 13:56

Wow are people still thinking this shit? I thought that was a summer 2020 stupid meme only. Jeez. Read up and educate yourself. Hmm

MeadowHay · 07/09/2021 13:57

I don't wear them, I sometimes didn't even when they were legal as I couldn't always tolerate them due to various disabilities. I definitely don't have any bad opinion of people who choose to though, it's none of my business.

ACreakingGateNeverStops · 07/09/2021 14:00

I still wear a mask in shops or in enclosed spaces more of a courtesy than anything else because many places still ask you too. I'm not convinced they do any good tbh.
It never crossed my mind anyone would judge me for doing this and if anyone criticised me I'd be amazed at their cheek/weirdness for caring.

FallingRussetLeaves · 07/09/2021 14:01

No, I just wear one in the supermarket and I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 07/09/2021 14:01

FFP2 masks have been compulsory for a long time where I live. I visited England recently and despite notices asking people to wear them on trains and in stations only slightly over half of people were wearing them on the largest station, and most of those took them off once on the train, put it on to get off and then queued in close proximity at the barriers without masks.

I wore my ffp2 mask throughout the journey and did get a couple of looks, but I also gave the woman sitting across the aisle coughing and sneezing and croaking on her mobile that she couldn't believe she'd lost her voice and was "fuming" while not wearing a mask of any type a dirty look, so can't really complain about how people look at one another Grin

ACreakingGateNeverStops · 07/09/2021 14:02

I should also add that my husband is classed as CV so I also wear one because it makes him happy.

bpirockin · 07/09/2021 14:03

I wear one any time I enter a shop or indoor public space. I appreciate that the benefits to me are fairly minimal, but something is better than nothing, and I have to think about my elderly Mother. Double jabbed, but still washing my hands frequently, using anti-bac gels etc. I still worry what would happen to my pets etc. if I did get it, and with all the variants etc, it just seems prudent to continue taking precautions. Fortunately, I am a bit of a hermit at the best of times. I do sometimes wonder if I'm being OTT when I see so many people not bothering, and it's not exactly comfortable, but for now at least, that's where I'm at. I live alone, and don't really have anyone to help out if I did become ill. I also know how guilty I'd feel if I transmitted it to someone else, so on the few occasions that I go out it's a small price to pay.

IncessantNameChanger · 07/09/2021 14:05

Nah I dont feel daft. I dont believe it's doing much either. I'm just wearing it to be polite. Maybe it does help with covid, I'm not sure but I'm a bit worried that I do still need to catch things.

I dont know really. I certainly dont care if people think I'm weird that's for sure

Lua · 07/09/2021 14:09

nope. use all the time and don't care about what anyone thinks.
my teenagers use to, so it can't be that embarassing.... Shock

Greenmarmalade · 07/09/2021 14:09

I don’t feel daft. Lots of people wearing them here too.

Greytminds · 07/09/2021 14:10

I am still wearing one to shops and other indoor public spaces and transport. Also still have to wear one to every hospital appointment I attend. I’m almost 37 weeks pregnant (although also double vaccinated) and want to take all the precautions available to me to keep me safe before the baby arrives.

juliainthedeepwater · 07/09/2021 14:10

I definitely think there’s been a massive shift recently. Mask wearing feels much much less automatic. I’ve been I’d say in the 5-10% minority of mask wearers at various places - shops, indoor entertainment venues and a big services - recently. It does piss me off as obviously it’s all about protecting others.. so I do feel like a bit of a mug when I’m the only one bothering. Also saw a big group of police unmasked in the services which felt like a bit of a turning point to me. I’ve no doubt at all they’ll be a return to mandatory indoor masking in the winter though.

Delatron · 07/09/2021 14:11

I don’t judge anyone but you do all realise that wearing a mask protects others from you? So you’re not actually protecting yourself?

So criticising elderly people for not wearing one isn’t right. You should be criticising all the teenagers who have just come back from Reading etc. They’re more likely to spread it/have it.

Also ‘doing what I can to protect yourself’ doesn’t stand up. You’re protecting others around you. Which is very nice and noble but if only about 30% of us are doing it it’s pretty pointless.

I think with masks it’s mass compliance and the law or a bit pointless really.

Starlightstarbright1 · 07/09/2021 14:12

I recently went to Wales on holiday where they are still wearing indoors venues / shops.

Tbh .it was very easy to slot back into wearing them .

DumplingsAndStew · 07/09/2021 14:13

Like the vast majority of people in the world, I don't live in England so, yes, I'm still wearing a mask in situations that call for it. No, I don't feel daft.

I'm still social distancing where possible too, even though that's not a rule in shops and stuff now.

HarrietOh · 07/09/2021 14:14

I stopped wearing mine but I see plenty people in supermarkets and occasionally pubs/restaurants (the latter I always found pointless anyway). I don't judge people for wearing them, don't think much of it really.

Chotuladoo · 07/09/2021 14:16

For me it's not about what others are doing, like a light heated argument for/against a trend, like are-skinny-jeans-over.

I am wearing one because a family member is clinically vulnerable and I have to try my best to help keep them safe?Double jabbed, distancing and mask etc.

Each to their own I guess

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 07/09/2021 14:20

" I make very exaggerated side steps away from them too in the shops, like pantomime style, I no doubt look like a dick but I truly couldn’t care less." I wear masks when I can but in the heat they have previously made me vomit when I've been inside for any length of time (I'm autistic and lots of things can set sensory problems off). Tbh if you did that I'd probably cry.
