If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

I went to an event not wearing a mask when I wear one for everything else. Three days later I was so unwell and am still coughing a month on (but I am asthmatic). I did LFT every day which were negative. So no, I don't feel stupid for wearing one all the time.

Lots still wearing masks here, including me. I couldn’t care less what people think, I’m an adult not a teen about to give into peer pressure.

BunsyGirl · 09/09/2021 10:12

I wouldn’t feel silly wearing one but I don’t wear them anymore as I suffer from repetitive bouts of bacterial tonsillitis and mask wearing has made it worse.

MegaGengar · 09/09/2021 11:46

I'm still wearing one any time I go inside anywhere. I can't say I even notice what other people are thinking/saying/judging - I'm usually too busy doing my shopping or ordering a coffee!

I work for the NHS and am wearing one my entire shift at work, so for me it's more normal to wear one than not. I rather wish other people would keep wearing them but I can't control what other people do, so I just get on with what I think is best for me.

Oh, and my son in Y8 has decided to keep wearing his on the school bus and in class. Super proud of him as he is definitely in the minority but it's entirely his choice - we hadn't even spoken about it and I didn't know he was doing it until I asked him yesterday.

I work on a university campus and it's expected that students wear face coverings. Very, very low compliance of it probably about 20-30% are wearing a mask most students aren't even back yet.

Really nervous about how many cases there will be in a few weeks time 😬 I know so many people getting Covid quite badly even when double vaccinated.

I'm going to carry on wearing a mask but I don't think it will be of any benefit if none of the students are Hmm

@NotMyCat

This is my FFP2 Cambridge one so probably looks fabric like at a glance
Is that a valve on the side?

Had to go to tge opticians this morning. They were very strict - "you don't come in here unless you have a mask on and use the hand sanitiser."

After that, I went Starbucks for a coffee and was the only one in there wearing a mask (except for the staff). So it depends where you are. DH is asthmatic so we wear masks in shops etc and always use hand sanitiser.

NotMyCat · 09/09/2021 15:02

@WiseUpJanetWeiss yes. You can add a free valve cover when you buy it if you want one so you can wear it either way, or they do one with no valve
I just use it with the valve and if I go anywhere like hospital I put a surgical mask over

Oh I didn’t know valve covers were a thing. Looks good. I might try one.

NotMyCat · 09/09/2021 16:47

@WiseUpJanetWeiss yeah they do ones which come without the valve totally too
TBH I'm sort of over protecting others now - I got this to protect myself as CEV, but if other people aren't wearing masks then I just have to protect myself

I can see your point, however I’m still keen to protect other people who have no choice but to be breathed on all day. I know I’m low risk to them, but they don’t know that, so it only feels courteous. Double masking sounds sensible to me - best of both worlds. Probably looks crazy but who cares?

Same. Worried about the lack of masks (was bad last autumn) and having to teach in a room with no ventilation (old building where all the windows don't open). I will teach in a mask again despite being double vaccinated. Last year I felt like the university was going to back me up re: masks in classrooms but I don't have that sense now. Let's see how it goes and hope for the best...
CousinKrispy · 10/09/2021 11:04

I don't feel daft about it (just sweaty underneath, urgh). TBH I don't really notice that much what other people are doing as it's not my business to police them, and I don't care what they think about me.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 10/09/2021 11:08

I've just got back from Spain and they are still really strict about wearing them there.

Was a lady swimming in one in the pool 😂
