If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

Where I live there's still a lot of people wearing masks and even if there wasn't I don't feel silly. I have noticed though that some people still wear gloves but I don't and won't judge anyone who chooses to wear them.
I went to Sainsbury's on Sunday and a majority of people were wearing a mask (a few older people with gloves on) whereas in my small Asda shop on a council estate the majority aren't wearing them.

LizziesTwin · 07/09/2021 14:23

Still wearing them whenever I go in shops/taxis/public transport/walking around inside. Seems more respectful to those working in hospitals or medically vulnerable.

CharityDingle · 07/09/2021 14:25

Still applicable here, but when they no longer are, I may still choose to wear one, in busy shopping areas for example.

WorriedWishingWell · 07/09/2021 14:26

Still wearing in shops. Don't feel daft, it feels very normal. But I've noticed the numbers of people wearing them dropping week by week.

PrincessNutNuts · 07/09/2021 14:27

I'm still wearing a mask.

I don't want any more lockdowns, or for my children's education to be disrupted, so I do my bit.

emmathedilemma · 07/09/2021 14:28

In the last 2 weeks @LegendaryReady although I would also say that mask wearing increased the further north I went!

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2021 14:28

We’ve been on holiday in Cornwall since last week. I’d say only 1 in 10 people wearing masks in our hotel. I did feel a bit silly to begin with as we are wearing them but not any more, I will continent to protecting myself and will wear a mask.

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2021 14:29

Should have added, all staff are wearing masks and part of the reason I wear one is to protect the staff.

Peaseblossum22 · 07/09/2021 14:29

This is interesting. On holiday st the moment in Devon no one, literally no one is wearing a mask, I did feel a bit odd wearing one in a shop yesterday.

At home, another tourist area but on the opposite side of the country literally everyone is wearing them, you feel very odd if you are not .

bradshawine · 07/09/2021 14:31

I have blood cancer so I’m pretty self assured in my decision to wear a mask

ForkedIt · 07/09/2021 14:31

I walked into a petrol station without mine the other day and was in the queue before I realised so seemed pointless to turn around and get it. I actually felt quite mortified NOT to be wearing one. Tried not to breathe too much Hmm Grin

Fairnair · 07/09/2021 14:32

I am still wearing a mask when I go into our local shops, as they are quite small e.g. newsagent, chemist & Food shop. To be fair the majority of people are wearing them too. Wearing a mask to protect others rather than myself.

Lottapianos · 07/09/2021 14:33

I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with other people wearing a mask. I really don't like them and will be chuffed when we can all ditch them, but none of my business if other people choose to carry on

lancashirelady · 07/09/2021 14:34

Why on earth would anybody feel silly for wearing a mask?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/09/2021 14:37

I don’t judge anyone but you do all realise that wearing a mask protects others from you? So you’re not actually protecting yourself?

This is mostly true for face coverings. Surgical masks offer a bit of protection and FFP1/2/3 masks offer an increasing level of protection to the wearer if they fit tightly without gaps.

If they have exhalation valves they protect the wearer not other people, so you should choose valveless. Or wear a surgical mask over the top which does look really silly. Smile

AmelieLovesAutumn · 07/09/2021 14:39

@user1469971657

I would say around 80% of customers in my local supermarket are wearing them now.

Think they're pretty pointless myself, if a mask can't stop a fart it's not going to stop coronavirus.

Have you ever used a sieve?
coolasfcuk · 07/09/2021 14:39

No. Is the thread title intended to plant that idea?

badamsgirl · 07/09/2021 14:40

I still wear one on a regular basis when i'm inside shops, walking through common areas of restaurants and other enclosed public places. Some places i see masks everywhere (at a local theatre recently), but on another occasion bowling next to noone was wearing one, bar hubby and me. I definately noticed alot less people wearing them on school drop off this morning than at the end of last term (still encouraged by the school for drop off and pick up unless exempt) I hated wearing them at the beginning, but I'm so used to wearing them now so it doesn't bother me if i'm in a minority wearing mine when other's don't.

HangingChads · 07/09/2021 14:42

I still wear mine, don't really notice or care what anyone else thinks. Most people in my area are still wearing them anyway.

Popcornbetty · 07/09/2021 14:42

I dont trust boris so yes still wear one. There is still too much uncertainty and new strains/variants they don't know enough about. If we had a better leader masks would still be mandatory.

Imissmoominmama · 07/09/2021 14:43

I am, and tbh I haven’t seen many people without them in our town (NW). I was working in Bury and Blackburn last week though, and hardly anyone was wearing them!

mydogisthebest · 07/09/2021 14:44

Me and DH are still wearing them most places.

In supermarkets I would say the majority are still wearing them. It's younger people that are not.

We went to a pub to eat last week and we were the only ones wearing masks. Pretty busy pub and most people a lot younger than us. I felt a bit odd but no one seemed to take any notice.

Neither of us have had anyone comment on us wearing one but if anyone makes a rude or sarcastic comment I will make one back.

I think it is noticeable where we are that by far the majority of people over about 50 are wearing them and almost no one under about 40 is

Lobelian · 07/09/2021 14:45

I'm still wearing one in shops and indoor situations, as are most people in my (quite rural) town. It's as much out of respect for the staff who are stuck in those situations, encountering hundreds of people every day. We went up to Scotland to visit family last month, and I was really surprised by how few people in the motorway service stations we stopped at were bothering to wear them - like, maybe 1 in 10.

Since then, both DH and I have tested positive for coronavirus and while the vaccines obviously lessen the impact, it's still wiped us out for a week. If masks make even a small difference, then I'm happy to carry on wearing them for a bit.

VickyEadieofThigh · 07/09/2021 14:45

I'm still wearing them (England) and it pisses me right off that so many people are not - I'm doing my best to protect others and they're not giving me the same consideration.

Was in Lidl this morning and I'd say 20% mask wearing. When we go back into some sort of lockdown, it'll be precisely because Johnson, once again, couldn't summon the courage to make people do a small thing (and it helps encourage people to remember we're still under pandemic conditions).

Bimblybomeyelash · 07/09/2021 14:46

I follow the herd tbh. Most people still wearing them in the shops, and I do too. Nobody really on the school run though, whereas everyone did last term. I will continue wearing them indoors and on the bus and train, but yes I think I’d feel a bit of a wally being the only one in a mask in the school playground.
