Reported by bbc today on article regarding teen vaccine turndown.

I find that very hard to believe

Of my friends kids I know of only four that have definitely had it. That's out of many others.

Maybe 20% max in my social circle.

As a poll have your kids been confirmed as positive

I struggle to believe that too tbh. A cursory google tells me there are approx 11.7 million 10-19 year olds and just under 7 million confirmed covid cases in the whole population. Considering how many LFT’s have been performed in secondary schools over the last year I would expect that a decent percentage of cases in teens were identified.

Did the article break down how they arrived at 50%?

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/09/2021 22:31

Not surprised at all. Imagine most teens don’t have symptoms.

NormaSwilly · 03/09/2021 22:34

I have 4 kids aged 11, 14, 17, 19 they have all had it (confirmed by PCR).

derekthe1adyhamster · 03/09/2021 22:36

I work in a boarding house with 80 teenage girls. 4 have had it (South East)

DocAutumn · 03/09/2021 22:37

If it as contagious as they say then most people have had it.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 03/09/2021 22:37

When I the university students started last year at least half of DS's year group got Covid - all at different universities obvs.

Perhaps the 50% was concentrated towards the older teens.

chillichoclove · 03/09/2021 22:39

School studies have shown that 50% have positive antibodies to covid. In April! So must be higher now. Many have no symptoms. I think it's why the vaccine question is so challenging.

vdbfamily · 03/09/2021 22:39

I have 3 teenage rs. One just recovering, other 2 seem to have avoided it so far but who knows. When we were all lateral flow testing after eldest tested positive, it became apparent that youngest had no idea how to do a lateral flow. I asked had she not been doing then twice a week for months and she looked at me blankly. ( I leave for work early and DH WFH but he thought they were old enough to organise themselves( youngest 15) So who knows if they have had it asymptomatically. I know that are antibody testing where they can when you go for PCR tests so maybe that is what the evidence is showing.

Howshouldibehave · 03/09/2021 22:41

I suspect that’s a made up statistic.

None of my own children have had covid.

HSHorror · 03/09/2021 23:02

At boardmasters 10% caught it so immunity less than 90%.
Well ons have had over 1% having current covid for quite a while a year of that would be 50%.
It has been up over 2%

MMMarmite · 03/09/2021 23:04

The immunity test numbers will be higher than the number of people who had it confirmed via PCR at the time, cos there's a lot of people who get it without realising.

Wow is this true?
alloalloallo · 03/09/2021 23:13

I have a 16 year old and a 19 year old

My 19 year old had it - shortly after she moved into her Uni house. Out of 4 of them, they think all 4 have had it. DD and 1 of the others tested positive, the other 2 didn’t bother testing but had the same symptoms

My 16 year old hasn’t as far as we know. Her boyfriend has had it.

Out of my friend’s teens, it’s probably around the 50% mark.

How would you know if they were asymptomatic, as most teens are.

In an ideal world, we could all access antibody tests, which would inform us one way or the other. That would ease a lot of minds.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 03/09/2021 23:16

Isolated plenty but not tested positive so far. But a lot of the stats are hard to grasp tbh. BBC also said tonight that six million eligible adults in the uk have not had a single jab, seems a lot.

howtodealwithit · 03/09/2021 23:16

Most of DS's mates (aged 17) have had it, they all caught it at the same time.

I've not known any of DS2's friends (aged 12) to have it

Foghead · 03/09/2021 23:20

So many of my dcs friends and/or families have had. Probably about 90%. It tore through their school last year.

SirB0bby · 03/09/2021 23:22

My 17yo hasn't had it but my 20yo has had it twice.

whenwillthemadnessend · 03/09/2021 23:25

Was she poorly second time sir Bobby

If the two teens in my house, one tested positive and the other didn't get it when the rest of us had it. I strongly suspect it was him who brought it home in the first place, asymptomatically, as he was working with the public and the rest of us genuinely hadn't been anywhere or seen anyone.

Stripyhoglets · 03/09/2021 23:27

50% of my 2 teens have had. He caught it in communal residential accommodation. The one at home/school hasn't had it (yet! )

severelysound · 03/09/2021 23:28

The ONS is saying today 94 in 100 adults tested in England have antibodies? 92 in Wales, 90 in Northern Ireland and 93 in Scotland.

So assuming that is correct then 50% of teens doesn't sound unrealistic?

Who are they testing for antibodies to know that?

Are they testing everyone that’s had a PCR?

I thought 94% included both antibodies due to covid infection, and antibodies due to vaccination?
severelysound · 03/09/2021 23:50

Yeah I probably should have quoted the age specific ones for 16-24 because it's closer to the age group and lower % vaxxed.

So in that age group you have 30% est to have it from infection? And then I guess it depends on how many of the 55% who are vaccinated ALSO had prior infection and therefore would have them regardless of vax status.

Probably somewhere around 15% but that's a total guess, 20% seemed high but 10% seemed low.

So if 16 - 24 are at (around) 45% then I guess it depends on if you think teens will be about the same or higher or lower.

Teens were at school while the older group could have been WFH... but older group would have been out working while teens were in lockdown.

I dunno, it's a minefield but I don't think it's highly unrealistic.

@Howshouldibehave I heard they were offering them through one of the apps? I can't remember which one, saw it on twitter but zoned out since I don't have the apps 🙈
