And are going somewhere indoors, like the shops or a play centre, are you still running back to the house to get it or not?

Just curious what people tend to be doing.

It feels like a whole new mask etiquette is happening now!

I forgot mine the other. I actually felt a bit naked without it. I started wearing masks before they were made mandatory, so I expect I'll carry on for a while yet.
This gradual dropping of mask wearing is a good thing, in my opinion. It doesn't seem tobe leading to a big increase in cases.

herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:08

I have spares in the car.

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/09/2021 15:09

Hopefully the government reverse course on their ludicrous decision and reinstate the mandate. If nothing more it reinforces the message that the danger is still very real particularly for those who struggle to understand the reasons why face masks are so important such as the elderly.

Endemic Covid will wreak havoc in the older generations if they continue living as if the threat has receded. Now schools are heading back and the autumn is approaching the risk of household infections becomes very real, behaving as though Covid has gone is dangerous.

herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:09

@Peteycat

Because some people aren’t selfish?

Oh my... Not this again. Well YOU are selfish expecting people to wear them. There are loads of reasons why not to wear them but I'm not listing them because you should not be concerning yourself in other people's business.

gosh are you still preaching anti-masking? oh dear
herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:10

@Peteycat

Paste fail there...

Basically people don't want to. They don't have to. They are impractical and annoying.

but also reduce covid infection by 20-25% which might be useful this autumn and winter
herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:11

@Peteycat

"I still wear one because it protects others from me potentially transmitting covid to them. The delta variant is more easily transmitted therefore why wouldn't you?"

Because people don't want to wear them because they are crap and impractical.

By changing the law the govt has put mask wearing into the hands of individuals.

some of whom have little common sense but will still benefit from the actions of others

Its not mandatory so no I'm not even taking one with me, let alone running back for one.
herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:15

@Peteycat

"I'd say 60-70% of people are wearing them where I live"

Absolutel rubbish. No they are not.

no, round here it seems higher than that

I make myself look round M and S when I was in recently precisely because of people on here saying that no one wears masks, and I thought I'd do my won mini survey. Everyone appeared to be masked but 1 person. When I looked more closely she was in fact wearing a mask but pale pink, so less noticeable.

I don[t normally look all that closely at what other people are doing though, just have the impression of a lot of masked faces.

Also, who are you to tell someone else their experience is rubbish?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/09/2021 15:16

People aren’t behaving as of covid is gone. They are behaving like it’s probably going to be here to stay in some form or other for a while and beginning to adjust to that and get on with their lives and not live in a state of anxiety clutching a bit of cotton over their mouths while they do a weekly shop or walk into a pub. Thank god.

whatswithtodaytoday · 03/09/2021 15:18

Yes, I wouldn't dream of going indoors without a mask. I had to trek back up a very big hill last week as I needed my mask go to into a public toilet, and I'd left it in the car.

I think it's rude to not wear one.

herecomesthsun · 03/09/2021 15:18

People aren’t behaving as of covid is gone. They are behaving like it’s probably going to be here to stay in some form or other for a while and beginning to adjust to that and get on with their lives and if wearing a mask occasionally in a shop helps keeps infection numbers down, small price to pay, say I Smile

megletthesecond · 03/09/2021 15:29

clarke because we're in a pandemic. Because I'm bored with it and would rather not catch the virus and drag it out any longer. Because if my household gets ill my dc's miss school.

campingfever · 03/09/2021 15:33

I don't go inside without one. It would be unfair on people around me, and would likely raise my own risk. Those saying masks don't help prevent the spread of covid, that just isn't true. There's lots of research that suggests it helps in statistically significant ways. E.g. med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2021/09/surgical-masks-covid-19.html e.g. www.thelancet.com/journals/landig/article/PIIS2589-7500(20)30293-4/fulltext

VoyageInTheDark · 03/09/2021 15:39

I wear one in shops still but it's getting to the point where I feel self conscious wearing one rather than feeling self conscious without. I didn't wear one in the playground at pick up today as no one else was and it seems fairly redundant outside

Peteycat · 03/09/2021 15:45

Herecomesthesun

Are you following me round threads again? Honestly. As I've said before, I'm entirely entitled to my opinion.

HalzTangz · 03/09/2021 15:46

I generally wear them but if I forget I don't go back to get it, or feel mortified for not wearing it

Bellagonna · 03/09/2021 15:50

We generally wear them but forgot in Sainsbury's today and it wasn't until half way round I realised. I didnt rush to the car to put one on, we just carried on. I'm not convinced the dirty masks we have in the car and haven't washed since may 2020 are that effective at stopping the spread of anything anyway.

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/09/2021 16:19

I forgot my mask yesterday when I had to run into a shop. I very cautious still due to cancer treatment that only finished this spring. I did feel weird and indeed a little nervous. I rushed in, got what I needed, paid and dashed out. It wasn't very busy fortunately. I have noticed that very few people are wearing them now though.

I agree. And I get judgey when I see elderly people not wearing them. They (not all of them I know, but most) were quite happy to allow the youngsters to stay at home and miss out on lots of things to protect them but now the boot in on the other foot, they're vaccinated and youngsters aren't, or only partially, they're not doing one small thing to help protect them. And no, they're not al exempt. Not by a long way.

Well that is a completely different proposition to those of us who have washed our masks after every use!

You haven't washed a mask for 16 months and you put it over your mouth?

Why haven't you washed them? They're meant to be used once and thrown away if disposable or washed after every use if reusable.

That is utterly revolting.

grapewine · 03/09/2021 16:34

Why on earth haven't you washed it? That's disgusting.

Pissinthepottyplease · 03/09/2021 16:36

Yes I do. Masks are to protect others and I believe it’s very antisocial to not wear one.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 03/09/2021 16:40

Masks may no longer be mandatory in England but it's worth remembering that some of the people who aren't wearing them aren't rude, antisocial, selfish or whatever. Some people have never been able to wear them and still can't.

And I'm no anti-masker, before anyone accuses me.

Mintjulia · 03/09/2021 16:48

I have four of those nasty sweaty plastic ones in a pocket of my bag. I usually wear double layer cotton ones, but the plastic ones act as backup if I forget
